We stayed at this hotel in June, having made a late booking. Everything went smoothly. Large room with partial sea views, decent bathroom and good air con. The swimming pool is large, and has plenty of free beds. If you prefer you can simply cross the road to the beach, and hire two sunbeds and shade for 8 euros. We had B and B and breakfast contained a wide selection of food, suitable I would reckon for most nationalities. Helpful staff, who cleared tables efficiently. The afternoon Happy Hour is good value. Lifts very efficient. Excellent position across the road from San Cristobal Beach. This beach is pebbly and shingly, but stretches a long way. I've never known it overcrowded in several visits. there are plenty of tapas bars within easy reach of the hotel. One of our favourties - Petete- is just at the side of the hotel and La Orilla is next to the hotel opposite the beach. Beers ans wines around 2 euros with a free plate of tapas. The hotel represents good value.

Room Tip: Views from the higher rooms are very good, and the lifts swift.

The spa was closed during our stay, without letting us know beforehand. Food no good. Reception girls OK. Impossible to come in contact with the manager during our stay, to sort things out. an informative but nice E-mail sent to him after our stay, he did not answer. We had a wonderful travel ,one month long and we have given several hotels the highest recommendation. W e spend 2 months a year in hotels- the first time we write NEGATIVLY.

Hi,
Having read the reviews we thought we would book this hotel for a short break, so as we live in Spain it was only a short drive of 140 kms along the coast to Almunecar. We checked out the prices on-line and our little travel Agent was 33 euros cheaper.

The Playa Hotels Main web page was the dearest of them all and when rang to enquire about car parking I was told 16 euros per day my Travel Agent rang the hotel and it was 6 euros per day in a secured underground car park

My main gripe about this 4 Star Hotel, is the state of the Outside Swimming Pool, it has only just opened as the indoor one shut the end of May. So whilst is was shut, why did no one clean off the 3cms of GREEN and BLACK Algae that sits all around the tiles above the water line along with the Gunk and last years old Sun Tan Oil that has now turned to Filthy Grime.

There is one particular depth gauge tile that reads (Mt. 1.35), the (1.35) is below the water line and is readable, but the Mt. is so covered with Gunk and Grime, the Blue Writing is hardly visible on a the White Tile

When we mentioned it to Reception a man came forward, purporting to be the Manager and said don't worry Sir we will Work and you can Holiday (It felt like being put in ones place as another moaning Brit)

But guess what next day the Tile had been cleaned yes just the (Mt.) bit.

Its a pity all the Small Blue Tiles either side that are covered in the same Gunk/Grime and Algae have not been touched.
Google states the Following ( Black algae may harbour organisms, such as E. coli, which can make swimmers quite ill.)

Thank goodness the Jacuzzi and Spa were clean

Dear Guests,

In its moment, when you came to tell us about the presence of seaweeds in the stoneware of the swimming pool outdoors, I really thanked you since it was such a tight stripe hidden under the edge of the swimming pool that was imposible to see from any angle outside the wate,r and from the inside you had to look thoroughly.

Inmediatly the protocole was started to remove those seaweeds and we did it.
This is a manual task to be made inside the swimming pool and therefore we couldn't finish the whole perimeter in just one day because those tasks can't be carried out while costumers are inside the pool. And after consulting some experts, seaweeds doesn't have any danger except the aesthetic damage.

I can assure you that now knowing the problem, we will do a monitoring for this not to happen again keeping in control the painstaking cleaning of our swimmimg pool even in that hidden stripe.

I was surprised you told us that the swimming pool indoor was closed since this year, as it wasn't as cold as some others, we left it opened until the 22nd of June included.

I am glad to know that this is the only complaint you have of our establishement and as this is already solved and we are having it under surveillance for this not to happen again, I would like you to give us a new chance coming back to our hotel in a next break and greeting you again and thank you for the help you gave us pointing out this deficiency.

Yours sincelerly ,

This hotel is a must, clean, friendly staff, great food, entertainment first class. We was given a free bottle of cava and the spa wa jus great.
The area right next to the each, and shops and bars in the same area which made things very easy as we did not have to walk too far fr a nice quiet drink.

We visited this hotel now for the fifth time or so and we will continue to return for several reasons.
The hotel personnel is very friendly and helpfull and this is the case everywhere : at reception, in the restaurant, the bar, etc ... We have always asked for a room on the highest floors (great views and very quiet) and this request was always granted, but it helps to send a mail with your request in advance.
There are huge price differences when booking your arrangements. We booked through Jetair (with own transport) and with early booking reduction and this deal is very interesting. But also the hotel chain (Playa Senator) has interesting offers when using their early booking reductions, etc... Compare prices (also with and without transport at same travel agencies)
We consider our arrangement as extremely high value for money.
Some people complain that there is not a lot of variation in the meals. However, when the hotel gives you an extremely wide selection every day (e.g. daily 3 kinds of paté, english breakfast, daily cava at breakfast, 2 kinds of fish, 2 kinds of meat, 2 stews, etc... every dinner, ....) than it becomes difificult not to repeat some platters during the week. But we were there 9 days and we never ate the same. Food is not luxurious (except on Saturday evenings) but always very decent. Also, you can order your own eggs with the fillings you want, the same is true for pancakes.
The hotel could indeed do with some renovation, but all important functionality is working properly. And knowing what a crisis we have in Spain I personally think they do pretty well. Also important is that they keep their personnel. Only seldomly we see new faces under their personnel which is for me a good sign conserning employer-employee loyalty.
The drinks are of good quality and prices are very acceptable (e.g. 1/2 liter of house wine is only 5.05 euro, 1 liter mineral water only 2.45 euro). Also remember that from 17.00 till 18.00hrs it is happy hour in the bar and you get 2 drinks for the price of 1.
Location of the hotel is at the promenade and at walking distance from the park, the historical castle, the tourist information office.
We can strongly recommend this hotel. Best proof : we have booked already our next stay coming October.
P.S. If you think this appraisal was helpfull, please show your appreciation by pushing the corresponding button on the screen. Thanks

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the higher floors (preferably with sea-view). The view is beautifull and also impo...

Large hotel with far reaching views, including sunsets in Almunecar coast road, San Cristobel beach.
Efficient receptionist Carmen and lots of waiting staff very quick o clear your breakfast plates.
90 euros for a double room ( 2 double beds) 4th floor, underground secure parking and 2 breakfasts.
Take note - you cannot use the good spa facilities on a Monday as it is shut.
There is also an indoor pool and huge jacuzzi. The Spanish holiday makers ignored the sign that the jacuzzi was adult only. I rescued a young boy with arm bands who was alone and could not reach the edge because of the bubbles and his parents were in the swimming pool.
Almunecar is. Very friendly Spanish town with 3 beaches, good promenades along by the sea Nd an attractive old town.
There are many bars with lots of food choice and some huge free tapas.
Granada city is an hour away, visit the Alhambra and ski ing is in the Sierra Nevadas one and a Half hours away, Nov to March with snow making machines.

Almuñécar Playa Spa Hotel is located near the beach and less than half a mile from Almuñécar´s Old Town. We have already visited Almuñécar Playa Hotel several times (2003, 2005, 2013), but it seems that this hotel has seen better days and needs renovation. The hotel room is nice, clean and spacious and it has a private balcony. But for us the room and the bathroom are not really stylish/ modern anymore. Breakfast and dinner are just average, parking with extra cost. Free Wi-Fi only one hour a day in the lobby only and its speed is extremly slow (0.06 kbps download). Staff at the reception is friendly, but we have also seen waiting-queues (the same for the elevator). In summary, this time we were really disappointed and will try another hotel on our next visit.
