Everything about this hotel is special. Patricia and Manuel have created an oasis of fragrant gardens, irrigated by a series of old Moorish acequias and although the hotel itself is fairly small the grounds are extensive. We had a ground floor room with its own private terrace and sat there in the afternoon drinking wine and listening to birds singing whilst taking in the view across the gardens and swimming pool and beyond across a spectacular valley in the Sierra Nevada National Park.

The welcome was warm and informative and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. English was spoken by all the staff we met. Special mention to Chris the family dog who was a real sweetie.

Our room was comfortable and stylish and decorated with taste. A free mini bar and tea/coffee facilities were included. There is a cosy resident's lounge with music, games and WIFI leading to a terrace where meals are usually taken (depending on the weather). The restaurant is not open to the public - instead, for those guests who want to dine, Patricia expertly cooks a meal based on their own produce and what is best in the market that day. We enjoyed an excellent bottle of Rioja and their own olives followed by ham and artichoke then sea bass baked in salt with black linguini and a rich creme caramel for pudding.

Leisurely breakfast on the terrace consisted of a extensive buffet.

The final part of the road up to the hotel is single file with passing places but it is not a busy road and is about one mile at the most.

We loved it so much we have already booked a return trip.

You won't regret booking at La Almunia. It is serene and exquisite with gorgeous mountain views from your private patio/balcony, outdoor eating terrace, and grounds and pool areas. Our room was comfortable and clean. All of the staff were wonderful and interested in making your stay pleasant. Patricia and Manuel (the lovely owners) were especially helpful in giving directions, suggestions, and tips; answering questions; and helping with entertainment reservations. It is easy to get to the Alhambra and Granada but far enough out of the city to provide solitude when desired. We did struggle with allergies from the flowering olive trees and had to learn to navigate the single-lane road from town to the hotel, but those were manageable inconveniences. Christina the dog will make you feel like part of the family. The food is excellent. Overall, it is a wonderful experience.

Superb rooms - all unique - lots of special touches. Terrace balcony with fantastic views. Bed amazing. Tea and coffee in room - free mini bar with juice chocolate etc. Road up to hotel very narrow and steep. Staff lovely. Plenty of choice for breakfast - meats, cheeses, cereal, yogurt, cake, pastry, fresh fruit, Spanish omelette and other cooked items etc. We had the 35 euro menu one night - although expensive there were many courses and the food was special. Swimming pool in beautiful surroundings - unfortunately the weather was too cold to try. The hotel isn't cheap but we felt it was worth it.

This is a great hotel in the valley above Monachil and, once you've found it, is a delight. Be warned - it is difficult to find. We had the hotel's instructions, maps from Google and the Michelin guide so it wasn't too bad - but be prepared. The superior rooms (ask for 11 and 12) are great - wonderful floor to ceiling windows, views of the hills and luxurious bathrooms - worth the extra if you can afford it. Being in the hills is great but do bring a sweater. - we got some snow - and quite a bit of rain in late April. Monachil doesn't have a great deal going on but the locals are friendly enough if you take your life in your hands and go into one of the bars.. Try the kiosk at bridge 1 or the one next to the Ajuntemente near bridge 2 - free tapas came round twice in the 90 minutes we were there!
The couple who run the hotel will do anything to help - but you may want to buy some wine and nibbles down in town so that you can sit on you patio as the sun goes down!

Room Tip: Choose room 11 or 12 - beautiful and sexy!

We recently stayed at the hotel for 4 nights. We had a wunderfull room (nr 12) which was very modern on the top of the grounds with a wide view. The bed was very soft, but it slept good. I couldn't feel my partner when she was getting out of bed or was moving. The surroundings are nice, but you have to like to drive over a very narrow road towards the hotel. Most of the things are well arranged at the hotel. The wifi is however only accessable in the main sitting area and on the main terrace. We were however lucky to have it once in a while on the terrace right in front of our room. During our stay the room was kept clean, the last day the nice smell we had the first days after the cleaning was not there. We had to leave early on the last day (07.30) and requested an early breakfast. This was not possible as they were still sleeping at 0700 and the breakfast normally started at 09.00, but we could get a tray with breakfast items the night before we left. We arranged this at our arrival, but asked the last day again as it seemed that they had forgotten. The last night we got a breakfast on a tray and were a bit dissappointed. We got all the items that were not eaten the last three days or were not nice to eat (we got for example the glutenfree bread lying on the table for the last three days with no taste at all). It seemd that the tray was not prepared on forehand and was collected using a sweep of the breakfast area of itmes still there from the morning. As nobody was there when we had to leave, we could not complain to the hotel. It was not nice to leave with a hungry feeling, while paying a considerable amount of money for the room and breakfast. The regular breakfast was however well done. a tip is however not to come late as the buffet is not replanisched and could be plundered as we had on a morning after sleeping in.

This hotel is incredible. Maria, is wonderfully hospital and greeted us warmly on arrival. She was always on hand to give helpful advice and information.
We stayed in the fantastic room 7 for our honeymoon - a superior room and well worth the upgrade if you can stretch to it. We had a large and private terrace that caught the morning sun and gorgeous views across the valley. The bathroom was also great with a powerful shower and very large, deep bath.
One of the best aspects of the hotel was the food at dinner - a 4 course set menu for 35Euro. The food is excellently prepared and tasty and there was a great variety over the 3 meals we ate at the hotel.

Room Tip: Room 7 has incredible views and a private terrace

This hotel is a paradise tucked away in the hills of Granada. It's a short four-hour drive from Madrid, a 50 minute drive from the ocean, and a quick drive (15 minutes) to downtown Granada. The location is incredible; the hotel is even more remarkable. The building is a renovated cortijo - that is beautifully designed, maintained, and decorated. We stayed in one of the rooms that had a terrace directly off of it. The room was spacious, with lots of light, beautiful views of the sunset, and an exceptionally tasteful design. The area is rural and the entire property has beautiful views overlooking the neighboring villages and at points with the city of Granada in the distance. It is a bucolic, pastoral, and exceptionally peaceful setting with the utmost of luxury and comfort in the hotel.

However, this is just cosmetic, what really makes the place a 'must-visit' are the owners. We arrived after they had just reopened for the season. They provided a wonderful tour of the property when we arrived and at all points were available and interested in talking and sharing information about the area, dog areas in Madrid, etc. Furthermore, they were super-accommodating of our dog (even though it was a puppy that we had just adopted) and suggested a variety of walks in the area that would be appropriate for him/us. Lastly, the icing on the cake was that our food was essentially made-to-order. They asked us in advance whether we had any food restrictions and prepared an entire veggie-friendly, delicious 3-course meal for us. In sum, they were available, welcoming, and forgiving (e.g., our puppy knocked over and broke a glass bowl in the room and they were quite understanding and did not charge us for a replacement) and we wouldn’t change a thing about the entire experience (except our dog breaking the bowl). We would have liked to stay there longer and will definitely return.
