This must be the friendliest place in Spain. Not only is the area breathtaking, but the people are so lovely. It is worth spending at least one night in the area and doing one of the walks available, besides for wandering around the villages. The fellow at the tourist office at Pampaneira is very knowledgable and helpful and will give you instructions and a basic map if you tell him your time constraints and wishes.

A "must see"!!! If you happen to pass nearby, or spend your summer holidays in the nearby resorts, be sure to spare one day and visit the Alpujarras! The best way is to hire a car, as the road is really picturesque and there are lots of places that will tempt you to stop and make some pictures or just enjoy the magnificent views: above you - the snow-tops of the Sierra Nevada mountain, below - the lush green fields, and somewhere in the middle - the beautiful white Andalusian villages, that resemble rice that has been spilled around the mountain slopes...
The villages are small and cozy, with snow-white walls and streets, and from time-to-time colorful carpets and rugs, made and sold by the locals...
The only thing you need for a one-day walk around the villages are comfortable shoes and a camera! Also, be advised that the last village is relatively high (1500 m above the sea level), and a warm sweater/umbrella may also be useful if you plan to visit them in spring/autumn.
In each village there is parking, restaurant/cafes, souvenir shops and supermarkets (of course mind the siesta) :)
Enjoy the views and the atmosphere!

Unspoilt, superb local food and inexpensive. Makes you realise how expensive the Costa del Sol has become. Fabulous walking region.

We have spent the last few days cycling through the Alpujarras: fantastic scenery with challenging but doable hills even with bicycles with luggage on!! Plenty of refreshment places to stop and light traffic with considerate drivers who gave us plenty of space. A little prior hill training probably a good idea, but thoroughly recommend this for a scenic cycle trip!

Fantastic scenery, wonderful wild flowers, some challenging but varied walks! Close enough to Granada to visit for the day but far enough away to feel you really are away from all the hustle and bustle.

You are absolutely right! When you visited the flowers in the lower areas were wonderful. As the spring progresses towards summer, Spring flowers creep up the hillsides like a tide coming in. The walks are very varied and much greener than one would imagine for Andalucia. A day trip from Granada involves an hour or 2 each way by car, so a guide might help you get the most from the day. You can come by bus but then its better to stay a few days and relax more.
