“You get what you pay for”
Reviewed February 16, 2013 via mobile

I am here with a cheerleading group for a national competition. This is not the type of hotel that I am used to staying at. The staff is friendly and the breakfast is decent. But... This is a very old hotel with exterior hallways and it's 30 degrees outside so it is very uncomfortable leaving the lobby to get to your room. The room is clean and that's about the best I can say about the hotel. I just dont care for older hotels where the bath tub is old and chipping off pieces and is slow to drain. for a budget minded traveler the hotel is fine , but not for me. I would have rather paid the extra $30/nt I would have preferred to stay at the Hyatt or Marriott up the road.

My first...reading of /reaction to... your your review was that it had no merit.

Your heading I thought was.... just mean at worst...and at best condesending.

I read all 25 of your other reviews...
and found key words or phrases.... to support my "theory".

Hotel reviews...
like the Makena Beach Resort and Sheraton Resort both in Maui...
you found "fault" with and gave a 3 rating....
and the....
Sheraton Steamboat Resort in Steamboat Springs, Colorado...
that you...gave a 3 rating...
stating that it was old and dated....
stating...you could have chosen instead
to stay at an upscale condo while skiiing....in Aspen or Vail

And the "topper"...

Your review of the Saketumi Sushi Restaurant...
where you were impressed...
with the tasting of unique combinations they presented...
"These specialty rolls were quite expensive..but
"you get what you pay for"

Let me stop there....

I am from New York...so...most everything I say...
usually...I know...sounds rude...
but that is not....never is...my intent...
so my apologies...
for the way this is reading...

Well...maybe this time...I am being rude...
and my wife...just told me....I was...(she is always right)

SO...

I took a break...
and then re-read those reviews...

and this time...not being defensive

I saw all the other comments/words you used in your reviews..
and...
realized that you were actually giving...well balanced reviews.

Then I had to admit to myself ...that you are a good reviewer.

You stated positives and cons....
and all with the intent of providing meaniingful points...
for those readers...
who might be considering these establishments...
which is not only helpful...
but also in keeping with the "spirit" of what Trip Advisor is all about.

SO...
as to your review about our hotel..
other than your headline...which I still don't like...
I have to agree
you are correct on all your points.

So here is my response to your review...

We are an indeed an old hotel...
the building was constructed in 1958.....
but then again...a number of good hotels...
in Atlanta area as old as...or older than us.

The owners of this hotel.... purchased it in 2009...
spent millions of dollars.....over the course of two years...
to gut it...purchased all new furnishings...
and reopened it in June of 2011...as a Best Western.

We do have exterior corridors......
but of our 109 rooms 82 face the inside courtyard which is great..
because it really makes for an "oasis feel" in the middle of downtown...
10 months of the year...
but...
yes you are right...when it is...30 degrees and the wind...is blowing..
it is not pleasant.

AND I have to agree with you on "you get what you pay for"...
in the context...
as it relates...related to the bathtubs...
yes we should have spent the extra $ 10,000 dollars...
to have them reglazed properly...yes...we are redoing all of them.

My response...now over...

You take your family....with three teenagers...
all over the world...
snow skiing...water skiing...surfing...camping....
and to ...really good resorts...and fun restaurants.

You believed we earned/deserved... a 3 rating...okay...that is fair...
but allow me...
to give you a 5... for being a good dad/husband...family man

I spend three weeks a month traveling all over the US. Yvonne, your breakfast "Queen", is simply the BEST!!! Her attitude and her caring are not only evident in the quality of the hot breakfast, she continues this with personally greeting everyone and wishing them safe travels, welcome back, etc etc. A fabulous way to begin ANY kind of day. Not to mention she makes THE best eggs anywhere I go!!

Many of your staff deserve a shout out from Robert and Donnell to Russell. Each going above and beyond during or after (Russell) my stay!

I LOVE this place and when something does go wrong, they are quick to correct it! Keep up the great work Yvonne (mngr)!

Thanks, Happy Busy Traveler!

My Assistant Manager....Joelle...knew I was unsure....
about the... previous review...we received...just before yours...
headlined "Outstanding Property".

And confirmed to me that you indeed were "real"...
and "even better"...a Best Western Platinum Level member...
which is rather hard to achieve...
and confirms that you do travel a lot.

So...
coming from you...is really special...
and thanks
for
having shared the nice comments about....our staff....
Yvonne, Donnell, Robert, Russell...
and Yvonne Jobson our Front Office Manager...
it was really great to read.

As for that previous review...I am glad / relieved...
to let all of our readers know...
that....the reviewer called me today.

Of the many Best Westerns we have visited all over the country, this one in Atlanta will stand out for us for the warmth, charm, and friendliness of the staff. From the clerks at the desk to the woman in charge of the breakfast area - professional competence, and a real commitment to doing a good job were evident. The breakfast area was especially impressive: no overflowing trashcans - a general feature of such spaces. The area was overseen by a vigilant, helpful, attractive person day after day. All pots and pans were filled with inviting foods, the coffee was always refreshed, the whole area clean and welcoming. Finally, the excellent location of this BW, in the heart of the city, makes this an exceptionally good buy.

"All employees are a direct reflection of their immediate supervisor"...
I believe in that.

I have long believed... in that quotation...
do not know who coined it first.

For the most part...in my personal experiences...
when...
you get great service/interact with a great employee...

I have found...
it is because you have a manager...who really cares.

SO...I am pleased that you found the staff....
"warm, charming and friendly".

HERE....
at this hotel...

I am...really blessed ..to have...
three....great supervisors...

Joelle Dunn............our Assistant GM / OPS manager
Yvonne Jacobs......our Front Office Manager
Michelle Lovette.... our Executive Housekeeper

These three....

are the ones...
who created and maintain... an environment...

where our employees....are well taken care of...
and...like coming to work.
and in turn....
those employees....take great care of our guests.

Thank you for the ...
"warmth, charm...and friendliness"...in your review.

One of the best staff I have ever encountered and I was staying using my Best Western Point, so I have been in a few hotels. This one was older but had been remodeled, so was very nice. Only issue was with the handicapped shower/tub, not a roll in, but lots of hand rails, so we managed. Found out that they do not have a roll in shower at this hotel, even thought the web page let me reserve one. Great breakfast, and again great staft there also.

I should have known we did not have a roll in shower....so I feel stupid about that.

We opened the hotel about 18 months ago...with disabled ready rooms...
and...honestly...this is the first mention that we do not have a roll in.

I will discuss this with the owners...and have one of our rooms reconfigured.
SO thanks for "alerting" me...sorry that you had too.

Anyway...
thank you for your mentioning/stating...that we have a great staff...

Stayed here recently, hotel is in great location! The rooms were very modern and offered free WI-fi, which was helpful. The staff couldn't have been friendlier. Breakfast was great and we look forward to coming back soon!

Room Tip: there is no pool.

Thank you....and...as for that free wi-fi...it's super fast too at 50 mbps.

Sounds like I know what I am talking about...

Truth is...have no clue as to these super fast speeds terms...
other than I like it.

We used to have...7.5....and now 50.0.

Surprisingly....even though Atlanta is a major US City...
we can only get 50 mbps...no one has more in downtown.

In Smyrna....Georgia...
only 12 miles north of Atlanta...
where we have another hotel....
we....CAN GET....
and do have..........100 mbps.

How...why is that ?

Even more surprising...
is that those guests we have from Europe....
have told me...
that....their speeds...are up to...1,000 mbps.
and they pay...
much less than we do per month.

THAT makes no sense to me...
regardless...that US techs tell me...
that is because their countries are small.

Anyway...I am...."blabbing too much"...

SO...
congratulations on your first review...
glad........you were pleased.

Booked for one night, I showed up at the destination at 2am and there was no parking. Not even in their own lot. Front desk told me to find my own parking and I would have to pay for it if there is one available. NO AVAILABLE PARKING ANYWHERE NEAR THIS PLACE.

I said heck with it, stayed somewhere else and took my losses.

Ended up staying at the Hampton inn that night, Better everything, Cheaper, and a lot of available parking.

Best Western Frond Desk did not even care to check me in when I talked to him at 2AM.

I have agonized about my response...to your review...but the reality is...you are right.

Defensively...I considered explaining in detail what was...the root cause...
that resulted in this consequence...of your not being able to park.

But that did not seem to be relevant.

Defensively.....I considered sharing with you the dilema...
that all hotels...in downtown have...
with limited parking and that....none of us own our own lots...
and while we have not had an issue with parking in our two years open...
the night you arrived....we did.

But that did not seem relevent either....

Defensively....knowing that others are reading this...
for a moment...
I considered...thinking of...
some "great" explanation...to minimize the situation of what happened.

But that is not me...

I should have had a backup plan...I did not...now I do.

I screwed up and would like to make things right with you.

So...
while I am not allowed by Trip Advisor rules to show you my contact info

IF you would
please call our hotel...ask for my personal cell phone...
and...
I will reimburse you for your entire stay at that Hampton Inn.

Sorry....
