“Nice Hotel, Good Staff, A Few Issues”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2011

Recently had an out-of-town group stay for my wedding in the area at the HGI Atlanta NW/Wildwood. The hotel was nice, with clean rooms and a newly renovated lobby/reception/eating area. They were very accommodating to the group, as well as to us in the planning stages (pricing, sending updated booking lists, etc). Guests were very happy with the service, enjoyed the bar in the lobby area, and also enjoyed the breakfast and dinner offerings in the lobby as well. The beds were comfortable and offered a nice sleep. The discounted rate we received was great as well. The hotel does have a pool, but it was closed during the stay for some reason. Other guests also complimented the exercise facility as well. For those that worry about the hotel being so close to a busy road/intersection, the windows are very good at keeping out the noise...you won't have an issue.
However, there were some items that were a bit disappointing:
- When the hotel was booked months ago, we were promised that all renovations would be completed by the time our guests arrived. However, the hallway carpets were all being replaced during part of our guests' stay. Not a major deal, but would have liked a 'heads up' by my contact since I had been told renovations were to be completed.
- The hotel claims the 'odor' other reviews mentioned was due to the rug glue. However, I am not so sure about that. The odor seemed to have a natural gas scent, and got stronger when the faucet or shower was run in the bathrooms. I can only speculate, but I hope it was just the rug glue and ventilation as the hotel claimed. Guests were complaining about it, so it needed to be mentioned.
- The welcome bags we provided were not handed out to all of our guests. We had fewer bags than there were rooms booked, so we should not have had any left over at the end of the check-ins. However, the hotel had a number of bags leftover (guests were actually given the extras toward the end of the stay if they asked). Thus, some guests did not get a bag upon check-in as they should have.
- For our block we were told each guest would get a breakfast coupon. However, some guests complained that they didn't receive any at check-in.
- The hotel shuttle offered free rides to our wedding location, with pre-booked run times. For the trip to the wedding, we had to instruct the driver that his plan to make just 2 25 minute round-trips in the 75 minute frame we booked (one of his 'planned' trips being at the time our ceremony was to begin) would not work and he needed to go back-and-forth as needed and have the last trip here by 5 min before the ceremony.
- Our block included a Sunday night stay, and some guests were being told when making reservations that the discounted rate did not apply for Sunday night, when it stated it did in our contract. When we brought this to the hotel's attention, we were reassured that the discounted rate would apply for all booked nights and it was a 'system' issue with reservations. However, upon check out, a number of guests were billed the full rate for Sunday night and had to make note of the overcharge in order to have it corrected upon check-out.

In the hotel's defense, it did address all the above concerns and were very apologetic at times, but a few of the items should have been avoided with proper instruction for desk attendants. They didn't do a terrible job, but what they have to realize is that when a couple is planning a wedding, the last thing they want to deal with is guests having issues with what should be a cut-and-dry set-up with the hotel. Aside from email updates/check-ins here and there, I should not have had to contact the hotel numerous times to clarify issues, or hear about shortcomings from our guests.

In light of that, again, the hotel is a nice, well-kept, friendly staffed property that is an excellent place to stay (though the nightly going rate does have the 'Hilton' premium tagged on), but if you are looking to block off rooms for an event or occasion, just be prepared to keep tabs on line items during the process.

Congratulations on your recent nuptials! We are pleased to know you enjoyed our hotel and renovations. Our plan was to have all carpet installation complete by your booked weekend, unfortunately our hallway carpet had a later delivery date than expected. Fortunately, the installation was completed that Friday (not spilling into the weekend) and hopefully caused little inconvenience to your guests. You are correct in stating your discounted rate included Sunday. When we make changes to a reservation (such as a guest adding nights or changing room type) our system defaults to the original standard rate. Unfortunately, our staff did not notice the rate change when it defaulted. As for the gift bag delivery and shuttle service, again we apologize and will use this as an example in order to better our Front Desk and Sales Department service and communication. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience some of your guests experienced over the weekend. We pride ourselves on being a part of the wonderful memories that are created from a special event. We will continue to train on the importance of efficient and accurate service.

Sincerely,

Eric Gray

This hotel has been remodeled recently with new carpet. The rooms have an awful chemical smell I complained at the desk and they told me that they knew about it and they had someone to try and get the smell out but it is still there. Also when you take a shower there is a smell in the bathroom I think from the water and even on the elevators you can smell the odor. Therefore I cannot give the hotel a good rating as they don't seem to be too concerned about this problem.I was promised a free movie by one of the employees but they never did go through with that promise!I would think Hilton could run their hotels a little better many people noticed this smell including the employee I spoke too and other guests.I was on the 5th floor. The hotel is clean and modern but until the smell is gone do not stay here!

Dear Valued Guest,

We appreciate your comments. I would like to assure you that we are always concerned with our guest’s experiences. We replaced our guest room carpet and to our surprise the carpet had an industrial smell. The exhaust fans in the bathrooms pulled the smell out of the rooms and through the bathrooms. We have been assured that after a couple of days the room smell will return to normal and we can enjoy our new carpet. We apologize that you did not have a pleasant experience. We value your business and hope to have the opportunity to host you again. Please feel free to contact me with future concerns.

We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn for three nights while my husband interviewed for a job. The location is great, the front staff was personable, the breakfast was very good. We had made to order omelets every morning and the service was superb. We opted for the bed and breakfast package and it was well worth the extra money. The bed was super comfy and they gave you a choice of pillows. The down comforter was amazing. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Stayed one night at this hotel during Thanksgiving week. Upon check in, they made a big deal that we were "guest of the day". The upgraded room was large living room with a very small bedroom. Probably good for a business traveler but not leisure travel. "Gift bag" promised never arrived, even after we called to say we had not received it. TV stations were problematic. The radio or TV in the next room was on loudly all night. Upon looking at other reviews of this hotel, the "guest of the day" was entitled to free breakfast (we had to pay $10 each), room upgrade and bag of snacks. Not a good experience. Would not stay there again.

I travel to Atlanta a few times per year and have stayed at other more expensive properties in the past but The Garden Inn is the best in this area of ATL.
The staff is very friendly, helpful, and proffesional. For example, at breakfast one of the employees assisting with breakfast remembered me. It might not seem like much but she said "so nice to see you here again, what it's been a few months." Like I said not much but made me feel welcome!
A recent remodel was a real nice touch and restaurant/bar was added as well.
Convenient to restaurants within walking distance: Houston's, Mellow Mushroom, Frontera, and the breakfast at the hotel is very good as well.
When working in ATL this is my choice of places to stay: Convenient, reasonably priced, comfortable, and a friendly staff.

We stayed here over Labor Day weekend. Staff were consistently friendly and the room was in very good condition. The hotel was constructed in 2005 and feels clean and new. There was a nice breakfast buffet that we did not utilize ($10 per person), but the food quality looked good. There is a small pool w/ whirlpool off of the lobby. The hotel is appx 20 minutes from downtown ATL by car, which is convenient. Our only complaint is that the air conditioner would loudly kick in via a click from the thermostat and would then shut off very abruptly after a click, as well. Temperature regulation wasn't great, either. If you are a sound sleeper, it is probably a non-issue, but it affected us. We got a great value on the hotel off of Priceline, as well.

Recommended stay despite minor inconvenience.

Sure there are more luxurious hotels in the Atlanta area, but this HGI is the most comfortable. What I mean is that it is a hotel that compels you to come back because the staff makes everything easy. Absolutely no hassles. I travel to Atlanta quite a bit and I will go out of my way to stay here. I've stayed at this hotel 12 times in 2010 (so far). I will go out of my way to stay at this particular HGI. Why? The rooms are clean and everything in the room works. The staff is great and is always willing to go the extra mile to make you even more comfortable. I have yet to experience a night where I didn't have the environment (quiet) for a restful sleep and I have stayed here over a few weekends as well. Like I said, it is remarkably easy to stay here, in all respects. Thanks to the management and staff of this HGI. You folks make this place #1 in Atlanta for me.
