Owner description: The home of the Atlanta Shakespeare Company, the Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse on Peachtree Street has an enchanting history and a prime location in downtown Atlanta. We are a professional theatre with food and drinks available before each performance (and don't forget the apple crisp at intermission!)

We've been here a half dozen times, taking groups of middle schoolers. It's always fun to see them transition from skeptics to fans over the course of the play. The shows are well done, the venue is not plush (especially for the longer productions those chairs can get a bit uncomfortable), the food is good and reliable and the experience is great. I find it helpful to give the students a synopsis of the play on the way in (we drive 2 hours to get here), and they all remark that they began to pick up more and more of the dialogue as the play progressed. Safe and affordable parking across the street at the hospital and since the porn store relocated, the block is friendly. I've only been to one play that wasn't Shakespeare and stick with the Bard. Still waiting for a return of the Complete Works of Shakespeare and will pay for a ticket in the lower half. Enjoy and support this local group.

Atlanta Shakespeare Tavern does it again! Merchant of Venice is powerful and sensitively played, grappling with difficult themes of anti-Semitism and justice. "The quality of mercy" indeed for Antonio but not for Shylock! The entire company is excellent and makes Shakespeare accessible to all. I am returning in 2 weeks to see Merchant again so my teenage son can bring some of his friends to see it too.

It is a great evening. The actors work really hard and are wonderful. You are able to drink beer or wine while watching the play. All of the seating is very good. A lot of great interaction between audience and actors as well.

There is not a bad seat in the house for this up-close-and-personal playhouse. You will feel like you are back in the days of the Globe theatre, as these talented and vivacious performers temporarily transport you from Peachtree Street to Verona, Venice, London or Thebes. The food is great as well, though served in a slightly campy way, which only adds to the hole-in-the-wall ambiance. You will feel like you are a part of an intimate group that has rediscovered Shakespeare's lines and brought them to life. And indeed --that you are!
