Owner description: This stunning, porcelain-enameled building was designed by famed architect Richard Meier and is rivaled only by the art inside. Featuring American, European and African art, as well as decorative art and photography, the High Museum boasts a permanent collection of over 11,000 pieces, many of which can be viewed from different levels of the four-story, glass atrium.

Parking easy even in Midtown Atlanta. Check in efficient and friendly helpful staff. I chose to attend on a weekday to avoid the crowds and so happy I did. Exhibit was comprehensive and loved seeing the Rembrandt's and Vermeer's, of course the highlight being 'The Girl With a Pearl Earring'.

We happened to be in Atlanta while "The Girl with the Pearl Earring" was on display with other Dutch masters. That exhibit was very well done but the rest of that beautiful building seemed really underutilized. I understand that these major exhibits take up a lot of resources but if someone isn't a Dutch fan, there ought to be something else to look at.

It is a 4-hr drive for us to this museum but we return again and again for the great traveling exhibits such as those from the Louvre, the Chinese Terracotta Warriors, and the current exhibit of Dutch paintings. The permanent collection ranges from Renaissance and Baroque paintings to Decorative Arts to Modern and Contemporary Art. The architecture of the white enamel buildings is interesting, especially the central atrium.

The High Museum is a museum which is trying very hard to be hip and modern with their permanent collection and it lacks real substance to it. I really am curious as to who selected some of their work and of what qualifications they possess. They do have a few nice pieces, however it is simply that (a few). I would like more diversity and quality in the body. The real reason I visit the High is for the visiting exhibits. They can be either wonderful or disappointing. For this reason I dropped my membership and visit only when I know it is a show which is worthwhile. Martini and Jazz night is ridiculous. Impossible to get a seat, expensive, and lousy drinks. and the accoustics are terrible for music.

We have traveled to Atlanta over the last several years for Special Exhibits at the High. They never disappointed. These exhibits are well presented and informative. Unfortunately, the permanent collection is not what one would expect from a city the size of Atlanta. The Special Exhibits are worth the effort.
