“Peace and tranquility in the heart of Atlanta”

Hands down, my favorite place to visit in Atlanta. The cemetery is beautiful and quiet. A very nice place to take an afternoon stroll and learn more about the history and people of this great town. There is so much history to take in, it is nearly impossible to see it all in one day. Be sure to check out the website for upcoming events. There are fabulous educational tours available, as well as special events including Tunes in the Tombs and night time Halloween tours. I have visited many times, and the staff and volunteers are always very friendly and ready to answer your questions. This is a very old cemetery with amazing old growth trees and plants to take in as well. Watch your footing, as there are occasional tree roots to trip you up.

“Well worth a visit for those living as well as those not!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2014

Stopped by here when I had an hour spare during a quick trip through Atlanta on business.

The 48-acre 'Oakland Cemetery' has been part of Atlanta's history since it was established in 1850 and it is the last resting place of many, including some very famous people such as Margaret Mitchell who wrote "Gone With The Wind", the golfer Bobby Jones and the first African American Mayor of Atlanta. It also holds Confederate and Union Soldiers from the Civil War, Generals and also just ordinary Atlanta residents.

The Cemetery is a nice place (very atmospheric) to walk around and I loved the old brick paths and the variety of flora and fauna. It rained for a while during my late afternoon visit (I sheltered at the Bell Tower) and afterwards you could smell all the different tree's and plants.

I liked the Lion Statue for the 'Unknown Confederate Dead'. It was a shame I got there after 5pm as the museum, shop and visitor centre was closed, as I can imagine that a bit of time in there would really enhance the experience.

“Old local history at its best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2014 via mobile

A large group of us took the haunted Halloween tour if the cemetery and we were not disappointed! This is a lovely cemetery, well kept and appointed. The actors portrayed the deceased telling their story's of life and loss. It was done in humor and truth and all in good taste. We will be back this year for the tour again. We can't wait to see who they portray this year!

“Historic old Atlanta cemetery.”

This cemetery holds many Atlanta personalities including many members of my family as well as Margaret Mitchell who wrote GWTW. Oakland is a registered historic place visited by many.
