“Relax or exercise”
Reviewed March 28, 2007

This is a great place to relax or to get your exercise. It's big enough that you have plenty of room to find a bench or lay out on the grass. There's a large pond with ducks and several small "piers". A lot of people do their stretches on the piers or they feed the ducks. You'll see lots of people walking all breeds of dogs from St. Bernards to pugs.

There's a short loop around the pond that's popular for in-line skaters. However, after it rains, a bunch of twigs and dirt washes down the hill into the road so it's not perfectly clear of debris. Also there's a spot that's a bit hilly for beginners. A better place to rollerblade in the Atlanta area is the Silver Comet Trail (however it is outside the Perimeter and you need a car).

There are homeless people who hang around, but none of them bothered me, and I didn't feel unsafe during the mornings or afternoons.

Supposedly if it rains, the Tavern offers free drinks or some type of special to entice customers. I haven't experienced this myself.

Also there are private events at the Tavern including a huge St. Paddy's party that occurs a week before St. Patrick's Day. You have to buy tickets. Just imagine the biggest fraternity party you can, and you'll have an idea of what to expect. Bring your camera. Many people brought their own coolers and blankets and sat out on the lawn right outside the Tavern so they could hear the music and not pay money to get into the party. I would not drive there but take MARTA.

“Great Day Escape”
Reviewed January 1, 2007

I typically go to Piedmont Park once a week. It's a great environment for active people (paths for biking, rollerblading, running) or for those who want to sit on the green lawn with a picnic basket. There is enough land for a start up football/soccer game or throwing around a frisbee. It's also very dog friendly with a great dog park located just off the main trail. The dog park is divided into two sections: one for small dogs (below 20 pounds) and one for larger dogs. There are spots just outside the park where you can grab a bite to eat or something to drink. Park Tavern is the only resturant actually inside the park but, fortunately, they have outdoor seating so your dog can be tethered nearby. There are a couple playgrounds where little kids can run around and have a good time and several adult swings around the perimeter of the lake.

The only downside of this park is that there aren't any vendors within it so be sure bring your own water if you aren't planning on stopping inside somewhere for a drink.

Overall, it is a romantic little getaway, a great family fun spot, and a nice escape from the daily grind.
