“Another fabulous visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

This was our 3rd visit to the yurt hotel, it never fails to impress us. There is something magical about the place and we always feel totally relaxed within a few minutes of arriving. The service is outstanding making us feel totally pampered. Fantastic meals, lovely company and comfy beds all in the sunshine. I also paid for a massage and it really was wonderful, outside under the trees in total peace and quiet. Don't hesitate to go here it really is the best place to chill out.

This hotel was the highlight of our trip. I had been looking forward to it and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately we could only stay one night but it was enough to make me know I need to go back.

Cortes de la Frontera is a lovely rural village with a bull ring, busy high street (not in siesta time though) and locals sitting on the corners looking at you! You go through the village and into the country within walking distance though to the retreat.

We had a two person yurt with our own hammocks, sitting area, outside shower and toilet and we loved it. There is something about sleeping practically outside but also in a big four poster bed with a duvet and beautiful furnishings.

They have a pool and plunge pool so you can cool off and a great bar with cheap drinks where the guests chill out and enjoy a chat with like minded people.

Then there is the food. Henrietta (one have of the owning couple) was cooking when we stayed and she made the most amazing meal. Canapes and and champagne to start, then a three course home made meal and as much wine as you can drink! We had a fabulous meal and met lovely people.

Thank you Henrietta and Ed for making our night so special and I would recommend this haven to anyone who wants to get away from things (there is wifi) and chillax. But saying that you can easily do road trips from here or if you are a keen cyclist, go for a bike amongst the mountains. The views are amazing. A real treat!

We had four nights here at the end of a fortnights touring around Andalucía. It was wonderful - our (Mongolian) Yurt was very secluded. The composting toilet and open plan shower didn't lose their novelty value. The salt water pool and plunge pool were very welcome in the heat. The service was excellent and the food superb. Because we had already done a lot of touring we only visited Ronda - which was well worth it- otherwise we just lazed in the shade and read. Mealtimes are communal and we were fortunate to share ours with a lovely group of people. If we ever return I think we will wait until Ed has his working dog trained to haul luggage to and from the yurts!

We totally concur with all the positive reviews and reject most of the negative ones:

We were here late July/early August so we knew that the weather would be HOT and dry, and perhaps that might not be guaranteed earlier or later in the season, but hardly a cause for complaint, unless one believes that Ed and Henry have some control over the climate. The forest/mountain location meant that the humidity was low and the Yurts were comfortable even on the hottest night. There were understandably quite a number of insects, but an insect repellent spray kept them at bay and we only got a couple of bites when we had forgotten to use it - I’m not blaming the quantity of wine or anything :-).

The yurts are very cleverly located with much thought having been given to sight lines, so no yurt overlooked another (certainly not the case with other yurts I have looked at). The result was privacy (essential when using the composting loos), peaceful and exquisitely beautiful. We loved the terracotta pitcher which sat on the yurt step and kept the water cool all day. The hammocks provided a lovely quiet end to the day in the dappled sunlight under cork and olive trees.

We had a day out in Rhonda and would recommend that along with a visit to Cueva del Gato for the beautiful turquoise pool and waterfall - go to both as early as possible - the former gets very hot and the latter very crowded.

We knew well in advance that hairdryers etc were not welcome and after a couple of weeks of acclimatisation prior to our holiday, I grew to like my un-straightened hair and combined with the gorgeous organic shampoo and conditioner it hasn’t felt this good for a long time. I intend to alternate straight v curly in future – it certainly takes a lot less time!

The food was fabulous including the breakfasts, which included fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, eggs and preserves (the best marmalade ever!). We ate out at lunchtime on two occasions and had very uninspiring food, so the decision to eat in every night, including the tapas evenings wasn’t difficult. I am not a huge meat eater and every day the staff took the trouble to ask if I would like a fish/veggie alternative. The lunchtime gazpacho was divine, as was the manchego with membrillo – we couldn’t fault anything. The only thing we would have been pleased to see would have been lunchtime ice-creams or sorbets if their freezers were up to it, but that is in no way a criticism.

All of the staff were helpful, attentive, friendly but unobtrusive - nothing was too much trouble. Ed and Henry, their children and their dog were all delightful company. Ed was happy to give us a sub-total for our final bill the day before we left, giving us ample time to go into town for extra cash should we have needed to.

We would love to make a return visit, the only thing deterring us being the other places we would like to see. So in the absence of a lottery win (in which case we will be making a regular booking), we hope to be back in a few years time.

Thank you Ed, Henry and all the staff for giving us the best holiday ever. x

This was our fourth visit and the Hoopoe Yurt Hotel gets more and more beautiful with every trip. We got engaged here, we got married here, we spent the first part of our honeymoon here and it's the first place we think of when we are in need of restoration. Henrietta and Ed have created something wonderful - the whole place is exceptionally beautiful, down to the last detail. It is a place of calm, peace, rest and contemplation. The pace is gentle and unhurried and whilst this is not a place for partying it is by it's nature a lovely, friendly experience and we've met some wonderful people here. The atmosphere is informal but we have never felt better looked after. Henrietta and Ed's team are fabulous and the service is unbeatable. The surroundings are breathtaking, the food is sublime and the mojitos will knock your socks off! Henrietta and Ed have got it just right - they are always present and happy to engage, whilst keeping a discreet distance and respecting the needs of their guests for privacy and space. We can't recommend this place more highly.

Room Tip: It's very much a matter of personal preference and the first yurt you stay in tends to be the on...

The Hoopoe Yurt Hotel is one of those places you go to and dream about going back.
From the moment Susan found the website I knew it was our kind of place, we looked forward to going for months before our visit in May 2011 and it delivered way above our wildest expectations. From the moment we arrived, we chilled and remained so all week. Having our business back home, even having to work each day for an hour or so didn't seem to matter. Ed and Henri are the perfect hosts ensuring that all their guests can relax and chill, their hospitality is first class, Chef Sebastian amazing and Eva brilliant, both a real asset. The yurts, the views, the food and drink are all fabulous. The meadow was absolutely fabulous - I'm not a Gardner but came wanting to plant my own meadow garden - and will do one day.
Henrietta and Ed have created something amazing and deserve all the success I'm sure they will achieve. If you are thinking of going to The Hoopoe STOP THINKING about it JUST BOOK- you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Safari Yurt at the top of the meadow.

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon, family and friends thought it a little odd at first that we were, as they put it, going to "camp" on our honeymoon but to be quite honest this was the best holiday we have ever been on. It was quite simply paradise. From the amazing dinners and cocktails to the luxury yurts themselves. The setting was idyllic, the staff amazing and so friendly they even put on movie nights under the stars. They arranged a massage and were around for anything we needed even if was just a chat. We met some great people there too. We stayed in the safari yurt. Some evenings we wondered into the village and enjoyed traditional tapas, which is a must, quite a walk but the scenery is so beautiful on the walk back we didn't mind. On our return to the UK we were both so relaxed. I have recommended it to all of my family and friends and would go back tomorrow. This is my perfect place.
