“Stunning and absolutely memorable!”
Reviewed October 25, 2009

After a grueling year of work in NYC we wanted to go to Spain but NOT a big city. We spent 6 days there; (longer than we'd planned but it was just so GREAT!). The location is excellent, with cute villages to visit all around while driving on scary but beautiful winding mountain roads. The rooms and the whole house are BEAUTIFULLY designed, with heavy handmade furniture and tiled bathrooms.
When we decided to self-cater we were fully expecting to have to compromise with a fairly basic kitchen setup. We were happily surprised to find a brand new, fully equipped kitchen stocked with every utensil we needed. Cooking dinner and watching the moon rise over the really breathtaking mountains was so amazing.
Stuart and Polly, the owners, are really, really nice and know when to let you be alone and are also extremely welcoming. We spent a very fun evening with them. We absolutely recommend staying at Finca El Abuelo.

Are you stressed and need to get away? Then this is definitely the place to be. We feel as if we have known Polly and Stuart for ever, their hospitality is second to none. The accommodation and amenities are 5 star but at a very competitive price. All your needs are taken care of. The location is stunning and the whole atmosphere enables you to relax and unwind.

Polly and Stuart are the most welcoming people you could wish to meet and welcome you into their home as if you were friends not guests. The whole ambience of the place is warm and this is definitely down to them. The accommodation is certainly 5* with very well appointed guest rooms and wonderfully equipped shared areas. You will be given the run of their home and we certainly felt at ease relaxing by the pool or reading books up on the dining terrace. The food Polly offers is fantastic and means that you really don't have to venture out if you prefer not to. Stuart's honesty bar is well stocked with very fairly priced beverages - an unusual experience for us. Its a great place to use as a base whilst you explore the national park and the various pretty hilltop villages around. Polly and Stuart have put a lot of thought into what a good B&B should offer and they have excelled with theirs. They couldn't do enough for us - great company too. Definitely a place to visit again.

My wife found Finca El Abuela quite by accident whilst looking for a place to stay for the first week of our three week holiday in Spain this August! Well, when we arrived, we thought we had landed in paradise, the house, room, food, wine, company was first class. We wanted to spend some time away from the noise and busy-ness of London to re-charge batteries, relax and read some books too, we managed all three with the help of Polly and Stuart as they looked after us, fed us great Prawn Pil Pil and had some great conversations!!. This was an outstanding week for us in a number of ways, and we will remember the beauty and serenity of the surroundings, we will be back! Someone already has said, "we came as guests and left as friends" - that comment says it all about Finca El Abuela and its wonderful owners - Polly and Stuart and we certainly can echo that! To add to all this, Stuart and Polly laid on the most marvellous meteor storm over 2 nights!
WARNING - this place will improve your health so please don't tell anyone else about this little piece of heaven on earth - let this be our little secret!!

Polly and Stuart have thought of everything in this place. Two superbly comfortable bedrooms and a terrace which is a total chill out area with a pool, comfortable sun loungers and shaded areas. The eating area outside has a "honesty" fridge where you can serve yourself with any drink at any time at unbeatable prices. Polly´s touches around the rooms are wonderful. The outstanding food was served outside-the atmosphere is so calm. I felt as if I was in a picture postcard. We felt so welcomed by these two lovely people. We loved it.

We stayed for 11 magical days at Finca El Abuelo, situated between the pueblos blancos of Cortes de la Frontera and Estacion de Cortes de la Frontera, bordering the Sierra de Grazalema and Alcornocales Natural Parks. Only 2 hours inland from Malaga airport, it is a million miles away from the busy Costas for those who want to experience the 'real' Spain.

Having walked in the Alpujarras, we found this region to be far better with its abundance of flora and fauna in the cork forests and parks. With the GR 7 almost on your doorstep and daily sightings of eagles, it is a walkers and birdwatchers paradise. Cortes is very attractive with its own bullring and from the pretty station at Estacion de Cortes you can visit Ronda and other neighbouring white villages by train.

Finca El Abuelo is the perfect base to explore this region - a beautiful country home but with the benefit of being able to stay on a self catering basis. With its large pool and spacious terraces, a perfect afternoon can be spent lounging on the luxurious day beds with the smell of jasmine and honeysuckle all around - a welcome relaxation after walking or sightseeing.

The B&B rooms are superbly furnished in a country, rustic style with heavy reclaimed doors, large comfortable wooden antique beds, beautiful bed linens, tapestry rugs and hand painted wash basins. Plenty of hot water, lots of toiletries, a proper coffee maker and digital TV provide every comfort.

Rather than booking a room with breakfast, we booked the self catering option and had use of the undercover, outside poolside kitchen. This is no simple affair of a barbecue and sink but a full working kitchen that any top chef would be pleased to cook in. There is a dishwasher, gas hob, bbq, microwave, fridge freezer, toaster, kettle, coffee machine, use of washing machine and beautiful crockery and cutlery. Cooking a meal in the sunshine looking out over the Andalucian mountains is what holiday experiences are all about.

However, what makes a visit to Finca El Abuelo so special are the owners, Stuart and Polly, who cannot do enough for you to make your visit extra special. If you need anything you only have to ask, but believe me, you won't have to ask for a thing as they have thought of everything to ensure a perfect holiday. From the honesty bar at the pool, to the delicious snacks and meals Polly prepares if you don't feel like cooking or venturing out, their attention to detail is remarkable.

For a couple, the self catering option is fantastic as you have all the benefits of staying in a beautiful country home with an amazing pool and terraces but at a budget price. Polly and Stuart are the perfect hosts and you'll have lots of happy memories and feel completely recharged after a stay with them in their lovely home in this very pretty region of Spain.

We discovered this lovely finca as we were leaving the area after a disappointing stay in a nearby hotel. A friend recommended that we check out Finca el Abuelo for future reference, and I'm very glad they did. We were greeted warmly by Polly and Stuart who have renovated this property to exacting standards and are attentive hosts. We spent the day by the pool and were served a gastronomic 3 course lunch with wine. By the the time we left, later that day, we felt as relaxed as if we'd spent the whole weekend there. This is a perfect place to unwind and escape from the world; the fact that there are only a couple of gorgeous rooms adds to its appeal...no madding crowds......a perfect retreat. 'Can't wait to go back.
