The Village Inn of Woodstock
Ranked #3 of 16 Woodstock B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 15, 2010

My wife and I have stayed at The Village Inn of Woodstock pretty much every August for a decade, and it remains our favorite place in the area. A great welcome -- Evelyn and David have a real gift for welcoming the public -- in a beautiful old house located quite near the center of Woodstock, which is the perfect small town. Breakfasts are delicious, particularly because of Evelyn's baked goods; the Inn is quiet and comfortable, and the hosts will do pretty much anything it takes to make your stay enjoyable. We love it -- and look forward to coming back each year.

The Village Inn of Woodstock is a bed and breakfast done right and our best ever B&B experience! Evelyn and David Brey are ideal innkeepers and lovely people—warm and courteous, professional but down-to-earth, helpful but not intrusive. They understand what a bed and breakfast should be and their execution is precise and well done—right down to their website and confirmation letter!

We found the Village Inn to be very quiet, relaxing and comfortable during our Monday and Tuesday night stay in July—perfect for our first trip to Vermont. Our previous B&B and inn experiences were not all stellar. Some of the beds were “antiques” (translation: old and uncomfortable) and some of the breakfasts were just ordinary. We found nothing ordinary or uncomfortable about this inn! We loved this charming, well-kept place with its enchanting flower gardens and carefully appointed interiors. We missed none of the big modern hotel accoutrements we usually prefer. The bed and pillows were so comfy and the sheets were so soft, that we abandoned our late afternoon plans in favor of a nap! Unlike some inns we’ve encountered, our room AND bathroom were very clean, all the plumbing functioned properly, and all the lamps and fixtures actually worked. Clearly, the Breys make this place and its guests their priority and it shows!

We would never have known dogs were on the premises except that we asked to meet the cuties we’d seen on the inn’s website—Alfie and Spanky. What well-groomed, hospitable little fellows they are! We really enjoyed a few minutes of playtime with them after nine days away from our own pup!

We live in a big city where excellent restaurants and cafes are abundant. Even so, breakfast at the Village Inn of Woodstock can be summed up in one word—DIVINE! Evelyn is a gifted baker and both David and Evelyn are obviously passionate chefs—their food is scrumptious! Each morning, we were served an elegant three-course breakfast at a private table of our choice, complete with china and pretty linens and flatware while familiar Beethoven and Mozart selections played in the background. Freshly squeezed juice and ice water were served in stemware and Evelyn kept our cups filled with the kind of rich, hot coffee we enjoy—poured from a silver service, too. Lovely!

The first course of fresh fruit was not some dull fruit cup or a scooped out melon half, but a special and perfect start to breakfast—one morning I could have licked my plate! Second course was a slice of Evelyn’s freshly made cake—each day a different flavor, both tender and delicious. We didn’t leave a crumb behind. Our first day’s “breakfast entrée of the day” was David’s yummy quiche Lorraine with buttered toast made from Evelyn’s homemade oatmeal bread (the best!) and thick, crispy bacon—every bite was so good! My husband enjoyed two perfectly poached eggs instead of the quiche. The second day we both had the best homemade Belgian waffles EVER with real Vermont maple syrup and a mild and tasty local sausage. My mouth waters thinking about breakfast at the Village Inn. Our only complaint—Vermont is too far from Texas!

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights and couldn't have been more pleased.
We had been booked originally for only one night, but extended our stay after our first overnight.
The inn keepers (David and his lovely wife Evelyn) are some of the nicest and most sincere hosts we've ever met.
Their attention to detail is second to none.
The rooms are beautifully appointed, and no 2 are the same.
The room amenities were fantastic. The common areas are wonderfully appointed.
Even the garden was so beautiful that we took our morning coffee there each day.
The food (breakfast...as it is a b&b) was amazing...fresh fruits with a little something extra...freshly squeezed juice... fresh baked goods of a different variety each day...quiches with all local meats and cheeses.
All in all, David is a wonderful cook and Evelyn's baking is fantastic. (David makes a mean bloody mary too!)
Without question we look forward to returning and strongly recommend any who might read this to take advantage of the hospitality offered by the Village Inn of Woodstock.
What are you waiting for? GO!

We decided to take a break and drive to Woodstock, VT for Independence Day weekend. Our stay at the Village Inn of Woodstock was the highlight. This family-owned and operated slice of heaven couldn't have hit the spot any better - the innkeepers were incredibly friendly and accommodating, the rooms was sublime and they even threw in a free BBQ for all of their guests on July 4th!

The breakfast was to die for, with a unique special featured on the menu each morning. The common areas were varied and useful - board games indoors, wicker chairs outside and a beautiful patio area with koi pond. The bedroom was furnished with a luxurious bed, authentic antique touches and a great, clean bathroom.

Overall, we were incredibly impressed. If you like listening to Edith Piaf while devouring homemade banana bread, this is definitely the place for you.

We have stayed at The Village Inn three times since 2005 and the experience is always wonderful! David and Evelyn are fantastic hosts and helped to make each of our stays memorable. The breakfasts are delicious and different each day - great coffee! During our last visit, we really enjoyed the terrace with the pond and fountains - David is a great bartender as well.

We discovered the Village Inn of Woodstock by accident as we were passing through Vermont on a very hot summer day in 2002. We needed a room for one night only and the innkeepers, David and Evelyn, graciously welcomed us. Although we were there only a few hours, we enjoyed a lavishly decorated room, wonderful amenities, and a fabulous breakfast before moving on. We were taken with the Inn and vowed to return. Finally--eight years later--we made our return visit, and it was even better than we remembered.

From check-in to checkout our experience was stellar. Evelyn greeted us warmly making us feel like we were old friends. She and David attended to our every need during our four-night stay. Because we were celebrating a special event, chilled champagne, our own hand-blown Simon Pearce flutes, and a spectacular arrangement of fresh roses awaited us in our room upon arrival. Several times during our stay little unexpected extras were magically delivered to our suite to make our stay more enjoyable. The suite was impeccably decorated and included lots of extras: king-sized feather-bed, luxurious linens, travertine bath (with giant whirlpool tub and separate dual headed shower), multiple flat paneled televisions, and remote controls for everything including lighting and air conditioning. Elegant, romantic, and charming.

Next I must reveal the best kept secret about the Village Inn--the food is exquisite! Evelyn and David never mention as they are pampering you with other amenities that they are both gourmet chefs. Evelyn's pastries and breads are magnificent, and David's mastery in the kitchen is unparalleled. I've had the privilege to dine in some of the best restaurants in the country and can emphatically say that the Village Inn of Woodstock competes in the highest echelon. Another bonus is the meal service. Evelyn serves expertly. She anticipates your every need throughout the meal. Your coffee is always refreshed. Breakfast is paced perfectly allowing you to savor each course before moving on to the next. Evelyn and David choose fresh, local ingredients and pair the courses so that each complements the next. Meal service is definitely a cut above.

Yet another perk is the private tavern. We enjoyed cocktails in this quiet and stately Victorian setting daily. David's expertise in the kitchen extends to the bar. His wine suggestions were spot on. It was the perfect place to unwind, and both Evelyn and David are brilliant conversationalists. One of the most enjoyable parts of our stay was "visiting" in the tavern at the end of the day.

Finally, as a venue for a special event The Village Inn of Woodstock excels. My partner and I wanted a small intimate outdoor setting for our wedding. The Village Inn fit the bill with their outdoor terrace and also provided a parlor in case the weather didn't cooperate. When we contacted Evelyn to inquire about holding our ceremony on the terrace, she lovingly helped us with each detail from scheduling manicures the day before to baking a cake. She and David even served as witnesses for us. Evelyn lovingly tends the gardens, so the terrace was spectacularly abloom. The fountain and coy pond provided a tranquil backdrop. David piped in music for us. They accommodated us in a dozen different ways to make our moment special whether it was moving furniture or providing stemware for our small rather impromptu reception.

I could go on and on about the many ways Evelyn and David make their guests feel welcome. Overall our experience at the Village Inn of Woodstock was splendid. We will come back again and again.
