“Wonderful owners”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2009

On a recent college search trip my daughter and I were fortunate enough to have found the Grist Mill. The owners were wonderful, friendly, informative and very nice. We had a room upstairs with the bath next door to our room. We were the only guests and the accomodations were very clean, quiet and comfortable. They made from scratch scones in the morning and omelets. We were about 25 minutes from King Arthur's. We walked down the street to the Kendron Inn for dinner and it was very good, with a cozy atmosphere.

What can I say? I nearly passed over this beautiful B&B as it was in South Woodstock and not in the town of Woodstock itself. I am so glad I didn't. Peter the Innkeeper could not have been a better host. His breakfasts are to die for - each day something new and exciting. We were too full each day but it helped keep the cost of lunch down! We stayed over the Christmas period and we had the whole place to ourselves - Peter just popped in now and then to feed the fire with logs - it was the perfect setting for a family Christmas away from home. We were lucky enough to have a white Christmas. Check out Peter's website - everything is just as described and more. The bed was so comfortable we slept better than we do at home. The only thing to watch out for is the Kedron Room loft bed - we had imagined some stairs up to an actual loft (off the bedroom) but it was a very high cabin bed. Our 22 year old son was a little dismayed at the height of it at first so wouldn't recommend that for a young child! However, this was a small thing and didn't spoil our stay at all. We loved every minute of it!

We felt so at home in this cozy mill. The warmth from the wood-burning stove and the hearts of the innkeepers made for an absolutely perfect winter stay. We would LOVE to go back!

My family stayed over New Year's Eve - we had 2 rooms in the Grist Mill and also booked Peter and Carole's house across the street - the Miller House. What an amazing time! Both houses are spotless, beautifully decorated, charming and comfortable. P. and C. were gracious hosts, the food excellent, and their hospitality superb. Rates are very reasonable. Will certainly stay again and recommend highly.

  • Liked — The comfy, homey feel. Great farmhouse decor - very tasteful. Breakfasts. Innkeepers.
  • Disliked — Nothing to say here. All a great experience.

My boyfriend and I just returned from a weekend at the Grist Mill House. We were looking for a nice weekend getaway at an affordable price and this bed and breakfast was the way to go. Compared to the other inns around town, this one was the cheapest. We paid $185.30 for both of us for Fri. and Sat. night.

We didn't have much trouble finding the inn. Finding 106 South was probably the most difficult part of getting there. Once on it, as long as we kept a look out, the inn was easy enough to find. We arrived late Fri. night around 10:30pm and the innkeeper Peter stayed up to greet us. From the outside, the house looks very small and quaint. Inside the house was a lot bigger than expected. Once you walk in, you see the spacious and cozy living room.

We stayed in the Miller's Room, which had a king-sized bed (2 twins together). On the bed, there was a binder filled with information about Woodstock and activities and restaurants around. I thought the bed was comfy, but since nights were pretty cool, the quilt wasn't enough to keep us warm throughout the night. With the window open and the fan off, the room was quite cool, most likely due to the running stream right outside our window. The drawback of this room was that it's right next door to the bathroom. Since the walls are so thin, you can hear whenever someone is inside.

The bathroom was very nice and clean - shower and bathtub. It also had a basket of fresh towels for everyone to use freely. Sharing the bathroom with the other guests was no problem most of the weekend. Sunday morning we had to wait awhile, but besides that, there was no problem.

Breakfast was served between 7:30-8:30, and you could write your preference on the chalkboard by the kitchen. The breakfast on the first morning was quite small, but good. It started off with a small plate of fresh fruit (strawberries, grapes, bananas, melon), followed by homemade baked oatmeal that tasted a bit like apple crisp. You have the option of juice, coffee, tea, and/or hot chocolate. The second morning was much more filling with a plate of scrambled eggs with vegetables, maple sausage, hash browns, and a slice of toast. In terms of eating with strangers at one table, it can be enjoyable if the other guests are easy to talk to.

Peter and Carole were very sweet innkeepers. Overall, the house was enjoyable and worth the money. Because the inn is so old, about 250 years old, the floors and doors were very creaky. Besides this factor, I'd love to come back and see their place in the winter to take advantage of the cozy living room with the fireplace stove.

  • Liked — Welcoming innkeepers; cozy livingroom to come back to; yummy breakfast
  • Disliked — Creaky floors, thin walls, and grumpy British guests

On a whim, my fiance and I decided to take off to Vermont for the weekend. We were looking for a place to get away from it all. I found the Grist Mill House on-line and was astonished with the reasonable price and friendly feel I got from the web-site. When we arrived at the house, my first thought was that the website didn't do it justice. It is twice as big as it appears in the photos, and so warm and inviting.
We did have a hard time finding Woodstock. I suggest that if you are planning a trip there, do not follow MapQuest's directions. At one point at about 9:00pm we found ourselves on a very quaint dirt road. Thankfully I had cell service and was able to contact Peter at the inn. He gave me very detailed directions, and even stayed up and made us dinner since at that point nothing else in town was open.
Peter and Carole are great, they made us feel right at home. At one point we forgot we were renting from two strangers, and started to believe that we were just visiting two old friends.
If you are traveling to the Woodstock area and choose to stay at the Grist Mill house, I hope to see you there. It is one place that I will keep going back to.

  • Liked — The food, hospitality, historic setting..... everything!
  • Disliked — Didn't dislike anything.

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights at the Grist Mill House. We had a wonderful stay! Our host Peter was very friendly and helped us find out way around the area. The breakfasts he cooked were some of the best we ever had! The house is beautiful and the beds are very comfy. We had a relaxing stay. The bathroom was very nice also. We really enjoyed our stay and loved the Woodstock area. We hope to return in the future.
