“Authentic and cozy”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

From the hand-hewn beams and pot-belly stove in the common room to the nooks and crannies and comfy beds in the three guest rooms, Grist Mill House is a welcoming and entirely unusual Vermont retreat. While many B&Bs smother their guests in Victoriana and fussy breakfasts, the owners of Grist Mill House have created a historic yet extremely inviting B&B, and their informal yet warm and attentive hosting made me feel more like I was visiting old friends than staying at an inn. (And they nicely accommodated my husband and my requests for "lighter" breakfasts with egg white omelettes which were all the tastier when eaten on the handmade wooden table in the breakfast room overlooking a brook.)

The very friendly but never intrusive owners are delighted to share not only recommendations for local activities but also fascinating tidbits about their house and about the area. We made good use of their snowshoes and followed their suggested route through picturesque fields and wooded trails, and were pleased to emerge right at the South Woodstock General Store, just in time for lunch which the General Store does wonderfully! (Best grilled cheese sandwiches, homemade soups, and fresh-baked cookies in the area.)

Just a two-minute walk to the General Store and to the upscale Kedron Valley Inn (with its nice tavern-style restaurant), and a three-minute drive to the swanky Woodstock Inn fitness Center, Grist Mill House is out of the bustle of town but conveniently located in its own little South Woodstock hamlet which we love.

At first we were concerned about the shared bathroom for the three guestrooms (one of which can accommodate a family of four), but it was never a problem, in part because we also had use of the owners' bathroom in their downstairs living quarters. And the people who seem to gravitate to this slightly quirky and off the beaten path B&B are people we were delighted to share the breakfast table with! As I'd read in previous reviews, the floors are indeed creaky, which advertises night-time bathroom breaks to other guests, but creaky floorboards will not prevent us from returning to this wonderful place!

I stayed here for one night with my mother and we both agreed that it was a wonderful place. Peter and Carole could not have been more welcoming or ready to accomodate our needs. The home itself has a rich history and Peter shared some unusual and interesting details.

If you like historic houses, you will love this place. It is 4 miles south of Woodstock, very quiet, on a small river. Owners accommodated our children without any problem, and price was very reasonable. (off-season) History of the place, the doors, the renovation were fabulous. Floors are pretty creaky if you are trying to sneak to the bathroom without waking others, but old house lovers know that is just character. Breakfast was not fabulous, but we did not give them much time to prepare (called from the road late). No televisions, but large common area with games, books, and a woodburning stove. Nice trails for hiking behind the house. Owners were incredibly nice and kind, going out of their way to give us the best information and advice so we would have a perfect trip.

Room Tip: Check beds--some are more comfortable than others in terms of firmness. Kids would like the room wi...

Grist Mill House is a beautifully cared for historic building–it would be difficult to imagine a lovelier inn for a New England getaway. The Innkeepers are warm and generous, the breakfast delicious, the common areas comfortable and cozy (a wood burning stove!), the rooms beautifully kept and adorned. Just lovely. My husband and I look forward to returning.

We found the place peaceful and cozy. The sheets were sweet smelling and the beds very comfy.
We enjoyed Peter and Carol very much. The breakfast was delicious and graciously served.
We felt very much at home and considered spending an additional night but needed to be on our way.It was the best place we stayed on our visit to Vermont and would highly recommend it to others looking for a delightful experience.
The only thing we found inconvenient was the sharing of the bathroom.

A long weekend getaway with my neice began with a two night stay at this charming B & B. The Inn is hosted with grace, style and enthusiasm by Peter and Carole. Peter is an energetic and knowledgable innkeeper and will gladly share recipes (which we highly encourage him to publish) tales of yore (he has a great sense of humor), and touring information. Breakfast is served in a lovely corner room overlooking the babbling brook and the food is different every day. Bone China tea cups, silver service, and authentic period furniture enhance the experience and lend a feeling of traveling back in time.
The cozy living area, warmed by a fireplace and other friendly guests, was the perfect spot for evening tea and a game of scrabble. Our room overlooked the brook and was soooo comfy!!!
Hurricane Sandy reared her stormy head and we found ourselves unable to travel home. Peter and Carole both worked very hard to reassure us and assist us in locating another place to stay.
If you are looking for a change of pace from the hotel experience, I heartily recommend you stay here. In addition to the charming and personal care you receive at the Inn, there is so much to see in the surrounding area and you will find restaurants serving lunch and dinner nearby. We both loved it here, have many fond memories and will return at our first opportunity.

Our favorite place in New England & most affordable too! I loved that it was off the beaten path a bit, away from the touristy downtown area. Also do yourself a favor & pick up some of the maple syrup they serve at breakfast from Top Acres farm which is just a mile or two away! They were great little souvenirs for friends & family that they'll actually use & enjoy too! Charming, quaint & historic! Would love the opportunity to come again!
