my wife and i have been stopping here on our travels intermittently for about 15 years, even back before owners relocated to independence from olancha. daytime and night time menu has become a little more streamlined than we remember from past visits... with mainly burgers, sandwiches and salads at lunch (gourmet and hand prepared all the way) dinner entree special on the board was a lamb shank and temperature and tenderness suffered a little. sauce was delicious. a more tranquil, relaxed and romantic atmosphere you will not discover between mojave and mammoth mountain. i feel i have grown up with this wonderful french woman and her children.

full disclosure.. did lunch on the way north on 395 to lake tahoe 7/30/14 and dinner on the return on 8/1/2014.

bon appetite !!!

It's small, the menu is limited and the service is, well, slower than you'd like. But if you just have some wine and chill, it's worth the wait. The food is the best in this small town. Salads are fresh and inventive, burgers and steaks are great. Go with the flow and you'll have a good time.

There were 6 in our group & everyone loved their food. The locals weren't really huge fans of this restaurant -- but don't listen to them -- it's undoubtedly the best dinner in Independence and would do well in any large city.

Still Life Café is an amazing find in Independence, CA. We were there to visit Manzanar National Historic Site. It was the café or Subway. Not even a MacDonald in town.
The food and wine are superb. The atmosphere is nice with great pictures on the wall and good classical music.
But the service is very slow. In France, you may want to spend a whole evening in a restaurant. But in a small American town, I wanted to spend some of my evening walking around.
The whole experience was also very expensive.
It's not often that we spend more on dinner than on lodging.

It's not often that I pass through Independence, CA, but whenever I'm traveling on Highway 395 I make a point of dining at the Still Life Cafe. Though the menu is limited and service is slow, the quality of the food and creative preparation have never disappointed. Daily specials are listed on a blackboard, and on a recent visit included pasta primavera and a duck galantine. The wine list is French, reasonably priced, and extensive. The walls of the historic building are covered with watercolors and photographs. Though the owner/server sometimes appears indifferent, if you engage him in conversation, his response is interesting and informative. On our most recent visit, when we inquired about dessert after a birthday dinner, his wife/the chef returned to the kitchen and prepared a delicious chocolate/mango/whipped cream delight. If you're lucky, you'll be there on a slow weekday evening when this intriguing couple may charm you with some of their personal history, which stretches from Paris to Algeria, London, and Los Angeles before reaching this small town at the eastern edge of the High Sierra.
