We went to visit the museum with our guide, Cornelia from maramuresguide.com. She is passionate about this period in history and once we were in the museum we certainly could understand why. The museum is organized in such a way that helps one unfamiliar with this period of history understand what it must have been like for the Romanian people. Many of the exhibits are presented in the cells themselves which make it necessary for your to enter. There is also a long hallway with the many photos of the victims and outside some amazing sculptures. For those of us without the historical background, it helps us understand. As we spent the rest of the day passing people working or walking along the road, we wondered what they remembered about this terrible time. (If you are planning to visit other places during the day, you should limit yourself to an hour or two, as it is easy to become lost in the fascinating but devastating history.)

Enjoyed the comprehensive explanation of life under Communist rule in Romania. There was a good written guide in English. One of the staff helpfully showed us to the memorial and bronze statues which we almost missed. A must if you are in the area.

Since we are very interested in communism, the suggestion from a Romanian local to go to this museum was a very good one. At the entrance you're provided with an extensive guide in whatever language you prefer, and an audio recording in the first room tells you what you're about to see. You're guided from one room to the next, each room has it's own theme and is very accurately decorated with photographs, parafernalia and text. At the end of your visit you're very well informed about communism and what it meant for those that were singled out. Impressively done, highly recommended!

My second visit here in the last 7 seven years - The Museum is now a multimedia one,

Even if you do not speak Romanian language, you can go and visit as you have info in every room in english/german or french or at least this is what i found out last week.

Other wise, a lot of history showing the communist era in Romania and it's horrors. Bear in mind though that you will need at least 2 hours to visit (so that you can read the explanations and observe the exponents).

I spend about 2h here but I was on the run unfortunately. It can be compared to Alcatraz.
The place is awesome! it is a real multimedia museum (not so common in Romania) gathering more than 50 cells each one dedicated to a certain time or movement from the communism era. It also screen a movie per day from "Memorialul durerii " (Pain Memorial) and has several audio points. Each room had a description available in Romanian, French, English and German.
It includes two yards too - one with some symbolic victims statues and the other one containing names and a praying place.
The place is extremely well done and it gives you all details needed to understand that hard period of time.

Fee: 6 RON (1.4 EUR) - students, elders - 3 RON (0.70 EUR)
Photographic fee: % RON - not applicable to phones.
