Five Guys is a growing chain of hamburger restaurants - there are two in Manassas and I have eaten at both.
The dining area is very basic - four top tables and barstools along a red Formica counter. There is a border of red and white checkerboard pattern on the walls. I like the throwback look and let's be honest, this is not gourmet dining.
They also keep sacks of potatoes in the dining room until they are needed in the back. I have grown used to seeing them but they could be off-putting to some. The location of where “Today's Potatoes” are from is posted on the chalkboard. (I guess if you ate here enough you could eventually tell the difference between the different potatoes)
The dining room is usually very clean but it can get absolutely horrible during rush hours. This is due to the large bin of free peanuts in the shell. Beside the bin are little tin cups to scoop out the peanuts. Most people tend to pour out the peanuts onto the table and deposit the empty shells in the tin cup. However, some people do not do this and the shells wind up on the floor. This restaurant gets busy during lunch and dinner so the shells can pile up before someone can get out to clean them up.
The menu is very simple - you can get a hamburger, a cheeseburger, or a bacon cheeseburger. That's about it - They offer hot dogs and grilled cheese.
I normally get the bacon cheeseburger - It is a large double patty burger. You can request up to 15 different toppings for free. The sautéed mushrooms are from a can, so don't expect much from them. Other than that, every thing else is super fresh and tasty. The hot dog is pretty darn good as well - I have never had a grilled cheese but I would hazard a guess that it is good too. One strange thing - there are no cheese varieties - you can only get American cheese. Not a problem for me since I like American cheese, but with the 15 varieties of toppings, it seems like they would offer a couple of cheese options.
For sides you can get fries - they come in two sizes and two varieties (Five Guys Style or Cajun). A Regular is usually more than one person would want but not quite enough for two. The Large would probably feed three people easily. The fries are cooked in peanut oil - so if you don't like that taste to your fries you will not enjoy them. My wife doesn't like them, but she likes peanuts so she just loads up on the peanuts instead.
There is only one drink size and the products are Coke products. All beverages are self service - which is good if you drink a lot when you eat. They also have sweet tea and unsweetened tea - both are pretty good.
I really like Five Guys - They make one of the better burgers you can find. I just don't like the limited menu and the mess from the peanut shells. That doesn't stop me from going there by myself, but it is hard to go there with a group. (Everyone has to agree that they want either a hamburger or a hot dog or it won't work) I would still recommend going to Five Guys - but maybe when the wife/husband is out of town.
