Mavina Holiday Complex
Ranked #2 of 13 Hotels in Bugibba

Stayed at the Mavina during September, we knew from the reviews that the accommodation was going to be basic and it certainly was that! But we only paid just over £20 per night for the room so certainly have no complaints. Everyone (staff & the large number of returning customers) were extremely friendly and I can fully understand why this complex maintains its very good rating on trip advisor. If you are prepared to ignore the dated decor, live with the shower that dribbles rather than 'showers' and improvise with the crockery and utensil should you decide to self cater, then this place is more than adequate. Bedding changed weekly and towels provided more frequently upon request, great little, salt water pool and internet free in the reception and bar areas.

Bugibba itself was brilliant, a bit 'tacky touristy' but with the majority of the holiday makers being 'a little older' there were no British larger louts, which was a huge relief and can be such an embarrassment when abroad. The Maltesse are lovely people, eating and drinking out is very reasonable and the food is yummy, the cheap and efficient buses make visiting the islands attractions easy or try the 'hornblower' which can be booked from Bugibba promenade for a great day long boat trip for 15 Euros pp or the jeep safari on the main island or to Gozo for around 30/40 Euros pp.

It's a budget hotel which is cheap and has a good location in buggiba especially as is near to the bus station for convenience of day trips. Was there on half board, breakfast was very poor and dinner was ok. Dinner is table service not buffet which is a plus and consists of an offering of two starters, for mains a fish, meat or vegetarian choice. Then for desert a choice of two offerings. The service in the restaurant is friendly and the guys are very helpful. The breakfast times were 8-10am, dinner 6-8pm. The only problem with the dinner timings is that we felt we were always trying to get back in time from day trips! Saying this however on the plus side there were a couple of times we arrived just after 8pm and we still got served!! The reception staff very helpful and if they didn't know the information they called the place for us. The rooms were cleaned regularly. The rooms themselves are very basic and a bit dated and I would say in need of refurb but they served the purpose. I checked the room for any bed bugs, cockroaches etc but found none. I did overhear another guest saying they had ants in their apartment but reception dealt with their complaint promptly. Ants in apartments in hot climates are not uncommon anyway. You can only get wifi in the hotels public areas being reception, bar , restaurant and pool area and not in the apartments . The pool area was very clean and the pool is good too. The location of the hotel is good in terms of locality for buggiba in that it is near the coast, next to supermarket, near the bus station, and there is also a good little shop called Alexander's that give you a good rate for changing £'s to euros if you need to and they also do cabs to the airport for 18 euro which is good if you had an early flight!! I could go on for ever buy to summarise, it's a good basic budget hotel with ok food and helpful friendly staff which has made the difference to me!

Staying here for the second time, you get what you pay for and for the price I won't complain tidy enough rooms bathrooms not fantastic but manageable for a week. Pool area is good and free wifi in reception now which is a bonus.

after reading the reviews, me and my friends decided to stay at the mavina holiday complex. we knew before that it wasnt going to be a luxury hotel or anything like that. when we got to the hotel, the outside looked like it needed a good paint, but other then that, it looked fine. the staff were friendly when we check in and out, but other then that did not see them as we stayed self catering. we did not see a cleaner the whole 7 days we were there, but did not bother us but maybe other people. the swimming pool was a good size and did the trick for us. as we aged between 22 and 23, bugibba is not the best place if u want to party, but its an ideal location if u want to explore the island and gozo. the location of the hotel in the town of bugibba was good, close to bus station and the famous square.

We visited this hotel in Sept 12 so just out of the high season. Basic but comfortable accommodation - had a cheap deal so not expecting more. Reasonably clean but probably not cleaned thoroughly between guests. Kitchen area small & basic but just about adequate for our requirements. There were 3 of us sharing so would have liked it to have been kitted out for 3! However, the staff were helpful & obliging when we asked for extra crockery. They wouldn't let us have a 3rd plastic patio chair for the veranda though which was a pity as it meant that we couldn't all sit comfortably together. Bit of a nuisance having to pay 1euro for sun lounger per day but we enjoyed the pool area very much & it was never too busy probably because of the season. There's a lot of shade over the pool during late afternoon. The ceiling fan was inadequate but we had a free-standing fan which helped a lot. Not sure we would have got on very well with the arrangement with higher temperatures though. Lack of power points in apartment & the TV has a 2 pin plug! The toilet is a bit off-putting as has a lot of limescale build-up. We found it was quiet at night (we were at the back overlooking the pool) - just the occasional bit of karaoke at a weekend! It was very well situated for shops, restaurants, sea front with access for swimming & the bus station! We really enjoyed our holiday!

Room Tip: Apartments overlooking the pool are quieter.

I accept that I booked this hotel as a budget break but when we arrived approx midnight Monday 3rd September I was very disappointed. The hotel although cleanish is in a dire need of a revamp. The furniture is very old and of poor quality, there wasn't anywhere to sit comfortably on the evenings. The basin was full of filthy water when we arrived the bath badly stained and chipped with mould on the shower curtain and around the bath. The bath mat was really awful. The staff overall were ok and helpful especially the two girls on reception during the day. For the first time we went half board, the food was appalling. We persevered for a few days but eventually spoke to the chef as we felt we couldn't tolerate it any more. The breakfast was not great either but if you paid extra you could buy a reasonable full english. When other guests on half board got together our main gripe was the food. Another couple refused to eat there any more. Another group agreed with the chef that they could order off the al la carte menu with a discount of the money already paid for half board. We requested this too and tried the mushroom and bacon risotto. The al la carte menu was not of any great standard either, we also tried the spaghetti Bolognese a maltese dish of beef olives and rabbit stew. The quality of the ingredients was not great so eventually ate out the remaining time. The pool area was clean and well maintained and some guests there have returned year on year. The rib eye steaks were fine but my mushroom sauce was really gravy with a couple of mushrooms thrown in. It has put me off trying half board again. The location of the hotel is within easy walking distance of the sea front with a very gritty man made beach and very close to the bus terminus.
I would not recommend this hotel unless you want a cheap holiday where you can ignore the poor room and food.

Room Tip: We had a pool side room which got great sun in the morning and was in the shade in the afternoon, al...
