Sunny Coast Resort & Spa
Ranked #7 of 15 Hotels in Qawra

Just back from a 7 day trip to the Sunny Coast and had a wonderful stay .Don't listen to the bad reviews, give it a go.We had a room on the 4th floor overlooking the bay and the room was huge and clean.Staff were very helpful and the mother and daughter in the village restaurant where we had breakfast were the best,OK the hotel is getting on a bit but the room we had must have been recently updated as we could not have asked for more. The shower and air conditioning were fabulous. My suggestion is make sure you get a room overlooking the bay. Maybe not 4 star but a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Higher floors at the front of hotel.Ok don't get the sun but what a view.

Good holiday and nice hotel however not 4 star as advertised. The rooms are nice and clean, the staff are helpful however some of the furniture should have been updated along time a go, including the beds - very uncomfortable. The air con isn't great either. The furniture outside the front of the hotel really let the place down. The sofas really need changing as they are frayed and tatty.

The pool is lovely and gets a lot more sun than the pools just down the road at the Qwara Palace. The gym however is pretty rubbish and was full every time I tried to go there. Quite a few machines weren't working.

The little place next door (Chaplins) is great and we had one of the nicest meals of the holiday - a great fish platter that was not on the menu. Also the bus stop is just outside which makes it easy to get anywhere.

We had a great week and the hotel is good, it's just a shame that some of the furniture hasn't been renewed.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are definitely better on the pool side of the building

The hotel structure is quite old should be maintained a little bit more in modern conditions, rooms are standard, well maintained, first night is clean second day no room service, we called the reception to bring us all the necessary for the bedroom. The view is awesome you wake up in a good status the clima is good, beautiful scenario. Standard breakfast no problems detected, but all the staff could do more to obtain a high quality service...

I think I'd better do this review in two parts - how it was for us and other things that we picked up from other people.
For us this was a good stay. We had an apart/room on the 4th floor which had a room with twin bed, dining table, tv and kitchen area, then the bathroom, then another double bedroom, then another seating area then a balcony over looking the road. So plenty of space. The beds weren't fantastically comfy but it had what we needed and whole place was fairly clean. Towels were changed each day along with bins emptied and then beds changed on third day I think it was. The cleaners were pleasant and polite. As were anyone we dealt with on reception.
The hotel is well placed in that it's neither one end nor the other of the island and the bus stop (as others have said, right outside the hotel) is very handy to get around either to the port one way for Gozo or Valetta the other way.
The food in the restaurant (we were half board) we found fine, well I did. As a veggie I think I did better as I think there were a few meat dishes that weren't quite as nice, but the portions are huge if that's what you like! The only thing with the restaurant is that it is changing hands in the next couple of weeks and all the family members that were running it all left bar two and the remaining two, however kind and lovely to speak to, couldn't cope so things were a bit muddled.
So that's the view from our perspective HOWEVER we did witness people arriving and being told there was no room for them as it'd been overbooked, people with timeshares there for years and years saying how it was going downhill and they were getting out and how the management didn't want to spend money to keep it nice.
I have marked it on children's activities as poor. I wasn't travelling with children and also don't think that the hotel tries to sell itself as a hotel geared up for kids especially though so that's perhaps not that fair, but the pool area I would say is more geared up for adults although there are a couple of bits there for kids, it's not a 'fun pool' with flumes or anything like that.
There is no way this is a four star hotel if that's what it's classed as, it's a three I would say. This is why it's difficult for me to rate really but as far as our stay, our room, our holiday the Very Good rating above is justified.

I chose this resort after doing research and it kept coming up with great reviews. I was taking my mum on our last holiday before i went travelling for a year and wanted it to be really special. I booked a one bed apartment as she was having the bedroom and i was having the sofa bed in the lounge, we always do this as lounges are normally spacious but that is not the case at this hotel. The lounge is a inside room with only a internal window, very small and claustrophobic. When the bed is out you can not walk around the room as no space. Could not do any cooking as felt to cramped. Bathroom is off the sitting area and also only has a internal window when you open the window you can hear the other rooms using the toilet so not good. Also bathroom door does not close properly unless you slam it so had to either listen to mother go to the loo at night or get woken by the door slamming. Internal window in sitting area / lounge does not have a blind or anything so was continuously woken up when another room switched their light on. I paid extra for a sea view which we partially had but due to another building having building work we could not sit on the tiny balcony due to cement dust flying about and couldnt breathe properly. Wardrobe also broke so we had to have a guy come and fix it as couldnt even open the doors. Hotel was fully booked until so we couldn't be moved. I reported to reception and was willing to pay extra to be moved but there was no spaces. I knew there was spaces a few days later as searched the internet i mentioned to reception i would book this via the internet and they said no they would move us if possible. This did not happen as obviously they preferred to get new clientele than satisfy people that were already there. I found one receptionist who i will not name to be very rude but the rest were friendly and helpful. There is a young girl that works in the restaurant and seemed to be there 24 hours who was great and deserves to be mentioned unfortunately i did not get her name.
The situation with the room totally ruined our holiday as we wanted to have meals on the balcony but had to eat out everynight instead. Also spent most time out as room so cramped dark and small. If you only want a place to sleep then this is ok as good location with good bus stop outside if you want more space then definitely book a 2 bed apartment but i can not confirm they will be any bigger as did not see. The pictures do not reflect living room in one bed apartment. I have rated this as average as other facilities increased the scoring but room definitely let it down. Also only two lifts and since there are seven floors it can take a long time to get out of the building.
We went to the bbq night please ive this a miss they had a local birthday party in on the same nigh and gave all their attention to them, chef left bbq most of the time i paid 13 euros for 2 pieces of bread a piece of raw sword fish and a piece of steak that was inedible.

Room Tip: 2 bed hopefully more spacious

- We complained about a strong smell of urine in our two bedroom apartment. The smell of urine came from our closet, not the bathroom. Outcome, cleaner brought airrefreshner and that was it.

-During the 3 day stay the trash weren't taken away, beds weren't made, one of the days the towels were taken and the reception said that the HOLE hotel didn't have fresh towels. They provided towels after 2 hours from our initial reguest.

-Clean towels in this hotel mean that they smell very unclean.
- The sheets were full of stains

- Staff was mostly friendly.

-This is not four star hotel on any scale.

-The island itself is very nice.

I stayed there for a week in August with wife and daughter, Two bedroom apartment. Not five star but clean, pleasant and well looked after. Nice location beside the sea and convenient for that area of Malta.
