Owner description: The Malta National Aquarium project is spread over approximately 20,000 square meters and comprises a public aquarium, a public landscaped belvedere at promenade level, a multi storey car park, facilities for local dive schools, catering facilities including a beach club, a merchandise outlet and a tourist information kiosk. The public aquarium has 41 tanks including reptiles, insects and amphibians, amongst others, Mediterranean fish, including fish commonly found in Maltese waters together with replicas of historical artefacts that one can find in the seas around the Maltese islands. The main tank of the aquarium houses species from the Indian Ocean, including eight black tip sharks, horn sharks, rays, eels and other exotic species. The main tank is approximately 12 meters in diameter and has a walk-through tunnel that allows visitors to experience the fish at a much closer range. All tanks are expertly themed to replicate the underwater environment. Additional features of the public aquarium include a class room facility, interpretation, touch pools, a temporary exhibition space, veterinary and quarantine facilities, etc. The national aquarium is in an iconic curved shell structure in the form of a starfish. The adjacent promenade provides additional recreation facilities for pedestrians including a children's play area. The Malta National Aquarium has a car park with a capacity for 140 cars. Our Location: The Malta National Aquarium is situated in the northeast of the island in a town called Qawra which forms part of St. Pauls bay. In this touristic hotspot one can find many Hotels, bars, restaurants and a casino all forming part of the unique resort location in the Maltese Islands. Qawra is also the site of one of the many towers built by the Knights of St. John. Qawra Tower is now a restaurant. Qawra is also well known as the "touristy" area of Malta due to the many bars, restaurants. Casinos and clubs are also a major part of this small town. “Great new attraction”

Was well thought out, and had some beautiful exhibits. Has a fantastic playground for the kids, and the restaurant looks lovely. The sea horses were our favourite! There was a special offer on to reduce the entrance fee, and this made it good value.

“disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2014 via mobile

After reading the reviews on here I was really looking forward to visiting the aquarium. I was so disappointed. Only two dozen tanks of varying sizes, no interactive points for the children. The tanks were insufficiently labled and very expensive for what it is. Steer clear of this place, worst tourist destination on the island.

“small but interesting”

Sadly sea life centres have given me false expectations of Aquariums! The tickets are ok in price but it is over quite quickly. We had fun and it is worth the trip as the fish are amazing.

Lovely and well kept, a bit small and repetitive though, it took around 40 minutes to see everything. There is a lovely park outside though that the kids really enjoyed. It was nice to see once but probably wouldnt revisit it.

“A great aquarium”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014

Visited the aquarium one afternoon. The whole place is really clean and fresh but it appears it is quite new. The toilets were a revelation as toilets seems to be Maltas tourist nemesis.

Went in and had a couple of snaps taken (typical and we never buy any). Went about below for a look around.

The aquarium is very typical, nothing there unusual or unexpected although the tanks and surrounding are very clean and clear and you are able to see the fish very well. Also saw what is possibly the most active octopus ever seen in an aquarium, usually lucky to see a tentacle but he was all over the place.

Bit surprised when we suddenly came to the end, its not the biggest aquarium.

At the end we purchased 3 photos (a first for us) and also had a link which allowed us to download them which was good.

I would recommend any visitor adds this to their to-do list, especially if you have young children.
