“Good base to see the Island”
Reviewed May 1, 2010

This hotel is a Malta a typical Malteese 4 star. The room was of reasonable size. The food was good. The price of the Hotel was excellent. The pool area was limited as is hotel is in the center of Qawra. The only problem is that the hotel is on a steep hill; in a built up area. There is a Bus station that is very near (You can get to anywhere on the island by bus). We used this Hotel for a base to see the Island and we found that both sides of this peninsula can be easily accessible from the hotel. Sandy beaches are limited in Malta. This a good value for money hotel but don’t expect Europe 4-5 star. Malta is a must see Island as you will go back to it again. I can not give a reason why but there is something about Malta that will draw you back May be it’s the People, Sun, sights, Old buses or that the Island is small surrounded by crystal clear waters.

Just back from the Canifor with my husband and 24 year old son we enjoyed our holiday .First impression of bedrooms not brilliant doesnt give a good first impression could do with a decor uplift new toilet seats showerhoses etc to make it look more pleasing on the eye beds comfy pllows Terrible badly need replacing .Most staff friendly and helpful 2 lady receptionists a bit snippy .Waiters very busy and efficient and mostly pleasant and helpful Charles head waiter very pleasant Entertainment ok from what I heard of it . Dvd channel a great idea a different film afternoon and evening would be better and also it being played automatically instead of having to ask when the lady receptionists are obviously busy and see this as low priority .I work hard and enjoyed having the leisure time in the afternoon and evening to watch a film when i was not out as the sun hot this was when I found the lady receptionists a bit snippy .It is my holiday after all and why advertise a dvd in the afternoon if you then dont provide it .The staff overall were very nice .The food in the restaurant excellent especially for Meat eaters as there was a plentiful supply .I tried rissottos delicious soups mostly great sweets the coconut cake reminded me of my mothers {i would like the recipe of the canifor chefs to compare }also the apple pie was great .would i go back to this hotel yes i would could i recommend it to my friends no but thats because i know the decor details would not come up to their standards .The thomas cook reps in the Canifor kept their cool in the ash crises thanks guys Jamie and Michaela .the airport business was a big let down and we were 19 hours in transit due to leaving resort too early not enough Glasgow places but Thomas Cook reps at Manchester let you down we were sat on a bus 2 hours before it was allowed to set off Dark haired young women ther particularly unhelpful .The bus seats thankfully more comfortable than thomas cooks plane seats but thats a different problem Canifor well placed for exploring island food is good staff are mainly friendly overall agood holiday

Arrived at 1am and told very brusqely that we would "not be staying at the hotel".
No explanation. Taken to the "Coral" ( my rating would be one star ), with the proviso that we would be returned to the Canifor at 6:30 am to talk to the manager.
Not until 9:30am did he deign to meet us in his office, who then attempted to make us feel like truant children. Two hours were spent waiting before he grandly emerged from his office to announce that we had been upgraded to a superior room with a free safe and ironing board. Still paid for a tv remote but passed on a 15 Euro charge for a key for the cooler. My wife and I travel extensively, and based on our personal experiences, this hotel would rate as a two star. Room and room service was good. Restaurant manager unfriendly and aggressive. Food was edible. Apart from room service and some front desk personnel, the hotel staff were impatient, unsmiling and appeared to be miserable.
We have stayed at four star hotels in Rome, Sorrento and Rhodes (at the same price as the Canifor), which can only be described as "fabulous" So this particular hotel was obviously a bad choice and a lesson learnt to read reviews more carefully.

we found most staff very unhelpful, and unfriendly.
the rooms were 1970s and very shabby with inadequate storage, but they were cleaned daily, with fresh towels.
our room was at the back of the hotel - we were woken every morning 5.30am ish by the housekeeping staff, talking and clattering, and banging doors. also daily refuse collection lorries and service vehicles outside window at around 6am which were very noisy.
meals were adequate but limited and poor meals for vegetarians. also no fruit available.
entertainment was good if you are over 60! same singer and keyboard player most evening, and bingo. there are a few bars closeby and we found them far more suitable for us.
the outside pool is VERY small and triangular shaped - not suitable for actually swimming in (unless you are a small child)
we would like to go back to malta one day, but not to this hotel

Generally speaking if you are planning to visit Malta and travelling with teens or even anyone under 80s please reconsider (this statment is not meant to disrespect anyone but hopefully to be accepted as advise) . It's very true that you get what you pay for however let me ask you this, if you go into a chip shop and order a plate of chips and if it was served on a chipped, dirty plate would you accept it? My point is, yes you expect to receive chips and yes its a cheap dish but you would still expect to be treated with respect and served with that same level of respect.
The hotel Managers, general staff and even Thomas Cook reps haven't got a clue of how to interact with the public. Each time we mentioned an issue to the rep Jamie, he showed very little concern or interest in the situation. Let me try to elaberate some more; On the first day that we arrived the toilet in one of our parties room was filty with faeces smeared all over. When they informed the receptionist she suggested that my friend found a cleaner and she should ask her herself to clean the toilet (what a cheek!!!) To hold the peace she did, but was told by the cleaner it had nothing to do with her (at this point tolerance should have been lost) however my friend returned to the receptionist who informed one of the four so called managers who didnt seem to care. This problem was only resolved because my friend instisted that they reallocated her.
What can we say about the food. Truthfully speaking they did there best to provide for the British but failed to understand that you would not serve a roast without gravy likewise some puddings should not be served without custard. We discussed this issue with the so called managers, only to advise them for future improvement.
The dining arrangement: what a fiesco, when you arrived for your meal , you were often kept waiting. On one day we were kept waiting dispite the fact that the room was half empty. On another day as we were walking towards our seat one of the many rude waiters shouted at us as if he thought he was at a cattle market " MOVE! MOVE! MOVE!" This happened on our last day staying at this horrendous hotel, and even the kids by this time had enough of it, so we peacefully moved out of his way. You are forbidden to take a glass of water into the restaurant but they will sell you a 2 litre bottle of water for 2 Euros. I didnt understand this because just around at the corner shops you could buy 6 bottles of 2 litre bottles of water for 2 Euros. Hotel rip off! The chefs stood behind the counters and handed you the food as though you are in some prison camp, and if you wanted more you would have to stand there with your plate almost in their gut area before they acknowleged your gesture.
The general facillities: I am not sure what people are used to but I am certainly not used to going to a hotel with such small pools, you could not swing a cat in it if you tried your very best. Besides the indoor pool and the pool table there was nothing functional for the teens at this hotel. No communal area. If you enjoy watching sky News 24/7 then it is worth hiring the tv control other wise dont bother as mtv and other channels are predominately in other languages.

There was one good thing about our visit. Coming home!!!!!!!!

Never never never ............................again. This was the worst holiday we have experienced and even if someone was giving it way free i would decline.

THE MANAGERS AT THIS HOTEL SEEM TO THINK THE MOST REVIEWS ON THIS SITE ARE A FARCE.

THIS IS A REAL ACCOUNT OF OUR EXPERIENCE AND WE DID NOT FIND ANYONE FUNNY.

First evening meal O-K second night all food & plates cold!
Third night Cockroach in the desert of fellow diner, after this we reported faults of dining area to our Thomas Cook Rep. who was unconcerned, as no one had been ill in the two years he had been there? (His name Jamie, puts notes under room door with love & kisses on them?) The Dinning room Concierge said Kitchen was sprayed once a month for Insects
Faults we reported of Bedroom/ Bathroom state were numerous & lots of folk demanded better rooms on day of arrival.
After day three, we had our evening meals at the near by Hotel Santana for remaining 11 days.
We continued with Breakfast at the Canifor, serial, fruit juice & a piece of the rock hard toast, was afraid to risk any thing else!
Oh & they (Chefs ) serve you with miniscule amounts of food.
Bye the way they did take the Cockroach infested sweet away.
Our worst holiday in 10 Yrs
Don't risk this Hotel, you have been informed with the truth, as they were on our final questionnaire
Oh nearly forgot, beware of their (Malta) crazy one handed bus drivers, they use other for their mobile phones, I reported to their Police about this & they just shrugged, Police station opposite bus terminus Qawra.
Peter & Anne!

What can you say about the Canifor, other than to agree with all the other negative comments about the hotel. The room we stayed in (401) was clean and initially we were satisfied with the service provided (clean sheets towels etc), but the restaurant staff are something else and it's all down to the Restaurant Manger, (Donnie/Ronnie?) not only is is he dictatorial to his staff but to the guests as well, he needs a crash course in hospitality management, he has no idea how to behave towards staff or guests. The food is adequate, but bland and the attitude is take it or leave it.
The majority of the guests are elderly English long stay guests who seem to think the hotel belongs to them and resent other guests being there, the entertainment is dire, who wants bingo and a corny singer with an electric organ??. ( I forgot - Elderly English guests). By the way, I, my sister and brother in law, are all in our mid 60's
You also have to pay if you want a control to use the television, fridge, tea making facility and safe in your room and there is no hot water after 9.30am until early evening (in April at least).
The hotel is tired (dark woodwork and marble in the reception area) it's like entering the inner sanctum, all in all it's such a shame as it's in an ideal position, close to the sea front, bus station, shops and bars. So, would I go back there, NO, but certainly to Malta as its a wonderful island.
