“Pleasant, enjoyable stay at the Canifor Hotel.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2009

Stayed at the Hotel Canifor for 1 week on a half-board basis as part of a Direct Holidays package holiday. We were allocated Room 417, a twin room with a small balcony that looked onto the pool area at the rear of the hotel. The room was spacious, simply furnished to European *** standard, comfortable and clean.
The public areas of the hotel were also nicely decorated and clean. In fact, there were always staff constantly buffing floors and polishing the brass-work!
The only real criticism of the hotel and its facilities was the small pool and pool area. As it was enclosed on three sides, it also became shaded from the sunshine by mid-afternoon. Small compensation was the rooftop solarium.
The hotel is well located in a quiet street only a 5 minute walk from the resort's bus station which made it an ideal base for visiting Malta's tourist attractions by public transport. The sea-front promenade is only a 10 minute walk away. There was a good choice of shops, cafes and bars in the streets adjacent to the hotel.
We found the quality of the hotel's catering to be very good. The buffet breakfast offered both a hot "English style" breakfast as well as a selection of cereals, cold meats and cheeses. Only critical comments are that the "fruit juice" was of the reconstituted powder variety and there was no fresh fruit available. The evening meals followed a formula of four courses - an "antipasti" selection of cold salads, a first course of soup, pasta or risotto, a main course of meat, poultry or fish with cooked vegetables, then dessert of fresh fruit and cakes. During our stay there were two special evening meals served outdoors at the pool area - one a BBQ and the other a Maltese-themed evening. In our opinion the quality of the food was consistently good. The breakfast service could be a little hectic at times but the evening service was always organised and efficient.
We found the hotel staff to be always helpful and courteous.
The Qawra/Bugibba resort offers a huge choice of bars, cafes and restaurants. We found a little family-run restaurant/bar - The New Buccaneers - on Pioneer Road just behind Bay Square, that served good quality, unpretentious food at very reasonable prices.
In summary, in our experience the Hotel Canifor provided a comfortable, relaxing stay and was very good value.

We went to the canifor hotel as self catering this hotel has 3 parts to it the hotel then the holiday complex and just up the road the appartments.we had booked for the canifor court but were put into the holiday complex as the appartments were full. The room was basic with 2 single beds, bathroom with overhead shower lounge was a table with 4 chairs, sink with draining board, cupboards, fridge and a small tv with showed only sky news in english outside was a balcony with 1 sunlounger and 2 chairs.Cleaner came every day and on self catering you could buy a 3 course meal for 8.euros if you wanted. pool area very crowded and pools very small.beer in the main bar area was lousy had that not cleaned the pipes smell and taste best bet is to go to the tourist bar next door and meet jools, charles and there son tony for a super night out great beer great price and great company with entertainmant on 6 days a week (thursday also inc a couple of games of bingo inbetween the artist) ..would stop in the holiday complex again but would give the court appartments a miss as they seemed grotty from the outside..also facing the court was a little cafe which did the cheapest full english in malta 2 eggs,2bacon,2 toast,2 sausage, beans, cup of tea and jam and butter all for 3 euros 90% of the others charge around 3.50 euros and dont inc tea or coffee

I've just been to Malta. It is a nice place if you can accomodate to the high humidity and heat.

But if you ever go there, DO NOT PAY FOR HALF BOARD in this hotel! I'll tell you this honestly, I didn't have high expectations to begin with, but the food in Canifor is truly horrible. Breakfast was so bad, we could only eat toast with butter and some cheese. Avoid paying a lot of money for very bad food and spend it in local restaurants instead.

We have just returned from a week All Inclusive stay with friends at the Canifor Hotel - we had a wonderful time & found very little to complain about. Upon arrival we were checked in pretty quickly. The room was extremely clean - the bathroom was a little 'tired' but served it's purpose. The room was spacious and bright.

The pool area is not so big, I prefer to lie around the pool area & was slightly disappointed with the size. However we found a suntrap next to of the Canofor Apts exit & I was happy enough with that.

The food was absolutely fine, not fantastic but for the price we paid we were more than happy & not at all expecting 5* cuisine anyway. The best thing was that for all it was a buffet-style restaurant, the chefs served the food to you rather than the usual 'free-for-all pile on as much as you can' that you often experience in 3*/4* All Inclusive hotels.

The breakfasts consisted of bacon, sausages, eggs (poached / scrambled / boiled), meats, cheese, toasts, sweet breads, tea / coffee. Lunch (if you eat in the restaurant) was served to your table, following making your choice from a menu. It was usually soup / salad starter, a meat / fish / veg main course & a cake-type / ice-cream dessert. Evening meals were similar to the lunch but on a larger scale. For starters - soup / pasta / salad. For main, 2 red meat / white meat / fish / veggie option & sides - potatoes / chips. For dessert there was always at least 3 different cake-type desserts & ice-cream on request. During the day, snacks are available at the bar (toasties & burgers etc). Personally I'm not a fan of fast-food & didn't sample it. It looked ok though.

The drinks were fine too. Lethal amounts of spirits are served but you're on holiday so just enjoy !! There didn't seem to be a limit of how many drinks you can per bar visit.

The staff are very, very friendly, although at times a little slow to serve. Given the heat, I didn't blame them though. Night time entertainment was geared towards the 'more mature' guests I think. We experienced the hotel entertainment the first night & although we enjoyed the night, we felt a little out of place as we were some of the youngest guests there & ballroom dancing is something I simply cannot do !!

There isn't alot going on around the hotel. It was my first time in Malta & wasn't sure what to expect. There are a handfull of bars & the people are ever so friendly. There's quite a few restaurants around too & we enjoyed each meal we had.

All in all, we would definitely return to the Canifor Hotel if we could get it as cheap as we did this year !! It was well worth it.

We read all the negative reviews about this hotel so we were a bit apprehensive on what we were going to find and to be honest the price we paid if it was going to be that bad we were prepared to eat out. For us cleanliness, fresh towels and rooms cleaned regularly are important to us.

We arrived in the early hours and were greeted by a very pleasant man on reception, our room was spacious and clean with fresh towels waiting at the end of the bed.The food was hot and edible with a few choices plus a salad bar not gourmet cuisine by anyones standards but meat potatoes and veg with soup pasta or risotto to start plus gateaux for desert, ok it did become a bit samey but what do you really expect? id rather have that then chips every night.
The average age at the hotel was about 60+ and im wondering if there expectations might be a little too high? We are in our forties and the entertainment in the hotel catered for this older age group which is fine as there are plenty of bars in the surrounding area where you can pick up a pint of beer for a euro.Another plus being surrounded by older guests we could always get a sunbed, cushions were a bit used but come on just put a towel on them.
On the whole we had a lovely time at this hotel and when i was ill(which i brought with me from the uk) the chamber maid came and cleaned the room a lot later without hesitation.

We did eat out twice during our stay because we really do like Maltese Food and i would recommend Grannys in Bugibba square and for a first class romantic meal try and find The Malet which is just off Bugibba Square where the food was excellent with first class service and there is even a private dining booth for Intimate Dining.Price around E40 but well worth it as the food is excellent with real maltese choices as well as normal fare.

I read the reviews about this hotel and decided to keep an open mind as some of the reviews were quite scathing. This is a 2 star hotel at best, not the 4 star on the sign outside. The fixtures and fittings are in dire need of refurbishment; the food is not of good quality and there is very little choice; some of the staff need lessons in customer services (they would rather chat amongst themselves or on the phone); there did not appear to be any disabled access - I could go on. We, my grown-up daughter and I, tried to give the hotel the benefit of the doubt at dinner in the evenings, but we had to give up and eat out. The only upside of the hotel is that it's a short walk to the bus station and the seafront. Luckily there are some excellent restaurants on the seafront.

The Canifor Hotel is centrally situated. The standard of the hotel was poor bedrooms were not cleaned properly and bathrooms not cleaned every day. Food was much the same each day no fresh fruit no teas or coffee with evening meal lunch was left overs from day before. The waitering staff were not friendly in the dining room no smiles or friendliness the reception staff were more friendly there was staff from the Santa Maria and they were all friendly. I think they need tosend staff on customer care course.
