Park Lane Aparthotel
Ranked #1 of 15 Hotels in Qawra
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 3, 2009

We spent a week in Park Lane. The service was excellent. In no time at all we were made to feel like family friends. Breakfast was served from 8.30 am and everything was available up to Full English.

The room was clean and comfortable with all the usual facilities. We could have cooked a meal had we wished. The balcony had afternoon sun so was perfect for relaxing after sightseeing.

The hotel is not on the sea front but that was of no importance. There were plenty of restaurants and bars within a maximum of five minutes walk. The car park was near by as was the bus station. The bus service was excellent and I would not hire a car again.

It is difficult to say what we liked best, but the friendliness of the Staff would be high on the list.

When I provide a review of a hotel I like to do my best to keep personal experiences out of it. As we travel we all encounter different people that can often make or break our own experiences, but the idea is to let people know where they're staying. So let me be as candid as possible about the actual hotel.
First find it, that could be a tad tough, but so long as you have proper driving directions prior to getting there, you should be fine. A plus? FREE PARKING, sorry, kind of made my day. The location is okay. Qawra isn't much to see really. Right on a little bay, but nothing all that charming or great about the area. If you have a car, which you definitely should if you're going to go Malta, it doesn't matter where you stay on the island everything is VERY close. I will say this much, however, it is in close proximity to Mdina/Rabat, Dingli Cliffs, Popeye's Village (yes, I am openly admitting I did something THAT touristy, but the water of Anchor Bay is amazing) and the harbor to catch the ferry to Gozo or Comino.
Reception was nice, went through the standard where are you from, etc. We were given our key to our room and our luggage was brought up shortly after. We examined the room, there was a noticeable stench coming from the bathroom, not quite sure what it was, so we kept the door closed and it was fine, of course you did have to deal with it whenever you wanted to be in the bathroom. We kept the fan running nonstop. Seemed to clear up by the second day, or perhaps it was just we had gotten used to the smell? The room is spacious enough. The beds are fine, nothing extraordinary. The decor is relatively average. The kitchenette is well stocked with all necessary cooking utensils and would work out great for anyone staying on an extended holiday. Two bottles of water are provided on a complimentary basis. The view is stunning from the wrap around balcony equipped with two chairs and a table (not sure if all possess that same sort of balcony), with a view of the ocean. For smokers, they ask that you smoke on your balcony only and not in the rooms. I think that's a good idea...helps keep everything from smelling stale. So you think you want to take a shower...hmmm...this might not be the place, unless you're capable of shaving, shampooing, conditioning and washing your bod in under 2 minutes. The water fluctuates initially, from scolding hot to luke warm, then after about 2 minutes, it's all ice baby! Uhhhh, it really wasn't hot enough for a shower quite so cold. I kinda think I've swam in rivers that were warmer. We notified the front desk and someone came up quickly. Not sure what the point was...he kept looking at the ceiling, turning off an on the light to the bathroom, and said we shouldn't have a problem, just keep the light on in the bathroom and try to shower a little later in the morning. Apparently EACH room has it's own electric water heater, and the voltage fluctuates on the island so sometimes it can be harder to heat the water because of low voltage. It's connected to the switch, or so he indicated. Am I buying this? No, not really. So on our last day we skipped the ice cold wake up call and waited till we got to our next destination to shower. BRRRRR!
Moving along, they have converters downstairs at reception, but if you borrow return immediately after use. We discovered that right after we left, reception went up to our room to take it back. I imagine they don't have many, so they'd like to hang on to the ones they do have for future guests.
Service - Andrea was very helpful in recommending places to dine and directions on how to get to where we needed. In all there wasn't a single person we encountered in reception that had a bad attitude or seemed unwilling to be of assistance.
There is a market right downstairs, directly next door - very inexpensive for snacks and drinks, and there is a place next door to the market that serves a decent breakfast. They have some tables set on a front patio and then some strewn along the sidewalk.
Driving in Malta, as a tip...just beware, there are signs - OCCASIONALLY, many times you'll have to be a great navigator and know where north, south, east and west are so you can sort of find your way. Most things are poorly marked and even though it may very well be down the street, it could take 30 minutes after you go in circles trying to find the next sign to point you in the proper direction. Oh and beware, they're just waiting to ticket tourists...for parking or otherwise. There is actually a speed trap set up right outside the airport. Motorcycle cops.
Sour note: some of my make-up had been taken. I did not take this up with the hotel.
Above all else, the value for what you get feels like you're robbing someone blind. We paid a whopping 28euro a night. Would I go back? Well now, what do you think? :)

Great staff! They have been helpful from first contact, via email, over the phone, in person, and the quality is always the best. Andrea and his staff are top notch. The rooms are comfortable, roomy and clean - we've stayed in both the the self-catered apt and suites and have been happy with both. Book early to get the sea view - it's gorgeous! The location is excellent, mere steps from the sea, supermarkets, shopping, restaurants, central bus station, coffee shops, etc. And Michael, the chauffeur of the airport transfer service makes the introduction and departure from Malta so pleasant (ask for him by name!!) Thanks for a wonderful experience. We hope to return again!
