“Another cheapo holiday”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

(This review is very late becasue it got lost in the uloo for 6 months, but here it is anyway. We went out in May)

This must be our 4th or 5th trip out for a cheap self catering holiday over the last 10 years, and this time it was the turn of Malta to entertain us. As is usual I never even let the Memsahib anywhere near the brochures until I made the selection and paid for it, this time finding www.lowcostholidays.com. If it was up to her, we'd spend around a grand, and miss out on some gems.

Anyway, this time it was £350 the lot, including the airport carparking for the both of us, flying Ryanair, (never again, but that's another story!), from Luton, to the 4 star hotel that is the Canifor Hotel in Qawra, (pronounced Owra), the posh end of Buggiba, (the chav end of St Pauls bay!).

Was it 4 star? Not on your nellie! 3 at best, but 2 for honesty's sake.

The apartment was a 3 room affair with a window in each room, none of which actually pointed to the outside world. There was no carpet in the "lounge", although the word "lounge" really shouldn't be used when it is really only an extension of the kitched with a tatty old sofa in it.
The beds were comfortable enough I suppose, and the shower, although all mangled was actually very powerful, with lashings of hot water.
I have to say, no stars for general cleanliness - the Baby Belling cooker was more grease than cooker, and the bathroom was filthy for the first couple of days. Although regular visits from the staff did see a marked improvement eventually. Maid service was excellent with towels and sheets being changed every day, beds made crisply, and regular top ups of bog rolls.

We did eat in the restaurant once, for a breakfast on the last day, and it was OK, but the all inclusive guests, (£230 a pop including flights), never seemed to stop complaining about the quality of food and service for dinner.

There are 2 bars, one of which is really a pool room, (in more ways than one), and the other more of a caberet dance hall. The evenings entertainment ranged from Karaoke to the odd duet, and was really quite pleasant. the beer a little expensive if you have to pay for it, but the wine was quite reasonable, and cheap.

The south facing Pool area consists of 2 pools, both a bit small for swimming in, with a small indoor pool directly underneath in the basement. Loads of sunbeds and chairs, although, again on the first day, obviously last years equipment, which quite quickly got replaced to brand new ones by the end of the week.

We did have our own personal cockroach which was nice! He scurried under the fridge on the last day as we were leaving and we never saw him again. I was quite upset - he never did say goodbye!

Anyway, once more, did any of this spoil our holiday - not a chance. For what it cost, and the amount of time we spent in the apartment it was good value at £37 for the week, and you really can't expect much for this can you? Would we go there again? Well we have a rule never to go to the same place twice - the worlds too small - but no, sorry, if we went to Malta again, we'd probably spend a bit more and go somewhere else.

One other thing. Eating out is actually quite cheap, but there is only one gem restaurant in the area. Head for the "Incognito" bar, opposite Trollies supermarket. Take no notice of the rather chavvie front, walk through the dark sticky bar, past the ugly disco area, up some steps to find an Aladins cave of a restaurant, which a truely marvelous menu, excellent service, and attentive and fun manager and waitresses. It's the sort of place your can walk into with a tie on, or shorts and not feel out of place!

firstly, me and my husband should never have been staying in the canifor hotel. we arrived in malta at 2am and arrived at our booked hotel(the coral) at 3am. On arriving there we were informed the the hotel was double booked and that we would have to be moved and "upgraded" to their sister hotel the 4 star canifor. On ariving at the canifor we were put into the apartments NOT the hotel. The room was damp, and smelly and the fridge had leaked everywhere. I am being very honest, the apartments are very uncomfortable and more like a hostel than somewhere you would chosse to go on holiday. we never had more than 3 hours sleep in 1 night as the lift was constantly buzzing(sounded like a generator - extremely loud) and would get stuck eery morning at 5am and start banging.
The entertainment in the hotel is TERRIBLE unless you are over 70 and like tea dances. The food is not very good and there isnt very much choice. The only redeeming feature of this hotel is the lovely bar, resteraunt and cleaning staff who cant do enough to help. My advice would be to go B&B(if you hae no option but to stay here) and to spend your money eating out - there are plenty of gorgeous restaurants to choose from and malta is extemely cheap(the nicest restaurant in malta is 5 minutes from the canifor, is named ta pawla and is extremely good value - the food is beautiful!)
Also, on the upside, the canifor is in the pefect location - 5 minutes from the beach/bay and 30 seconds away from all the best bars(best bar by far is the elvis tribute bar just round the corner). Apart from hating the hotel, malta is a beautiful place, and there is lots to do.

Room Tip: DO NOT book into the apartments, make sure you get an actual hotel room.

I have just returned from the Canifor Court Apartments with my Partner and 9 year old son. We stayed 4 nights all inclusive at the apartments. The All Inclusive element in situated in the Canifor Hotel 30 meters away which wasnt an issue at all.

The apartments are very basic but the beds were comfortable and the towels were changed everyday with a cleaning and bed making service every day which we thought was very good. As we stayed all incluisve we didn's used the self catering facilites in the room. The TV signal was very poor so we couldnt watch the TV. The shower pressure was also very poor and didnt make the shower a pleasure to use. The bath/shower also leaked so we had to keep 2 towels on the floor each night.

The food and drinks on all inclusive is provided by the Canifor Hotel which is a 4* hotel. The hotel is very clean and the reception staff very friendly.

The food I have to say is very poor for a 4* hotel. The breakfast is awful. You have to pay extra for fresh fruit. The evening meal was also awful. The snaks however were reasonable. The staff in the restaurant and bar are rude. On one occasion I waited to be served while the bar man sent a text on his mobile.

The entertainment at night is very poor and only caters for the older generation. The hotel is taken over on a Saturday night by the locals so you have no chance of being served. There is nothing for children to do and this is also the case for the surrounding area.

The indoor pool is not the cleanest and the sauna and jacuzzi did not work.

I would do your research before you go to Malta!

We had some worries before arriving due to the negative reviews which are unfounded. The apartment was clean beds made every day, adequate cooking utensils plus a decent cooker. We enjoyed our stay and found the staff friendly. Some people must be very hard to please we found it good value for money as the cost for 2 inc flights ex Belfast it was only £310 (this figure included £36 for private transport to and from the airport). We ate out at night as we where self catering and had some great food in Malta at reasonable prices.

I notice that the negative reviewers never mention the low cost. P.S. above figure of £310 was for one week.

The reason I say we didn't stay was because this place was so terrible we refused the room and paid extra to stay elsewhere. The room had no external windows, hence no view at all. The cooker was broken at an angle so cooking would have been impossible. The fridge, wallsetc were filthy. And the worst bit? Someone had urinated in the bedroom wardrobe. The hotel refused to give us a different room saying they were full, though when our travel company spoke to the hotel they said they could move us. So they lied to us too. Totally despicable place.

We stayed here for 8 nights in October with our grandson. We had booked for the Cardor Appts, where we have stayed before, but taken across to the Canifor Court. Once in the room we were quite happy to be there (Also we did not have to put up with the noisy lift of the Cardor, which goes ping ping at every stop 24 hours a day).
The view from the balcony was along the main street in one direction and the sea in the other, perfect, with plenty to look at and chill. The back balcony was mainly for your washing to dry, with not such a good view. Maid service was everyday and the rooms were kept nice and clean. We did have a problem one evening with a cockroach in the bath but were given a spray to use from the Canifor reception which took care of the problem straight away.
Beds were comfy and clean(never done so much sleeping on holiday) although all 3 beds were in the same room (which was'nt really a problem) if wanted could have moved one into living room. Plenty of space to do so....only downside to this appartment was the lift, which was the size of a broom cupboard, and would often stop between floors. My husband got stuck in it once and my grandson three times, but if you were patient it would start again. Best to use the stairs.
Would book here again, for the money we paid it was very good.
