White Dolphin Holiday Complex
Reviewed September 5, 2011

Having read some of the caustic reviews of the White Dolphin, I approached our visit with some trepidation. However, I found the facilities completely acceptable for the very low price I had paid (£165 for flights, transport to and from the apartment and the accommodation) for three nights. If you just use the room as a base then it is fine. Remember though that this is an apartment rather than a hotel room so bed linen and towels are not changed. Our room was on the ground floor next to the swimming pool but use of this was prohibited after 6 pm and this was adhered to by guests. As for the charge for air conditioning and tv , well you really cannot complain given the prices you pay - they have to make their money somewhere. The staff were friendly and helpful and the one item of food I had (a thin base pizza) good quality and tasty. To sum up, well worth a visit as long as you appreciate it is a no frills experience.

Room Tip: It is better if you can get a room with a balcony, and one not on the ground floor, but I guess that...

I just wanted to write a quick review to reassure people who have, or are going to book to stay at White Dolphin.

I think it is fair to say, many of the experiences people have of a place depend on what type of holiday they are looking for. I stayed with my partner (were both 22) and we just wanted a base on a night as we were out from 8.30 every day.

I have been to Malta 3 times now and love the island and the people. White Dolphin provided a comfortable, spacious and friendly atmosphere. I think it should be made clear that even if a place says 5 star, it is not the same as 5 star in this country so I think people often feel a bit disappointed. I am pleased to say that White Dolphin did not disappoint and I still can't believe how cheap it was at peak time!

The rooms are large and have everything you would need. You do have to pay extra for air con, tv and a safe but we managed without the tv or safe so just paid an extra 30 euros for air con for 6 nights. You do have to pay a 20 euro deposit but you obviously get this back. The only other extra we chose to pay was to keep the room all day on the day we were leaving (our flight wasn't until 8.40). The hotel allowed us to keep it for as long as we wanted that day for 20 euros extra. Towels were replaced once in the week we were there but you can request fresh ones if you wanted. I think the bedding was only changed once too.

The staff are fantastic, very friendly and helpful. The staff are even willing to go shopping for you at no extra charge! The food is great on a night (we never tried the breakfast) and drinks are very cheap! The pool area is suffient in size and we saw many people enjoying it all day everyday! There is also a games room and lounge area. On a Friday is BBQ night and there is a singer about 4 times a week.

The location is fine if you are willing to walk about a 15minute walk to the town of Bugibba. There are a few bars/shops/resturaunts just round the corner in Qawra. Although the hotel/apartments are listed as St Pauls, that area is actually about 25 minutes (walking) away.

We found it very useful and cheap to buy a week bus pass for 12 euros which allows you to travel all over Malta as many times as you wish. As we were doing a lot of site seeing, this was definitely worth it.

I think White Dolphin would be good for families and couples who want to explore Malta. I would say if you plan to stay in the hotel the majority of the holiday you may want to pay a bit more and stay somewhere a bit better as it is not a luxury hotel.

I would recommend this hotel based on the price, staff and conveince.

Hope this helps!

Room Tip: I emailed well in advance to request a first floor, pool facing apartment as ground floor do not hav...

I stayed at the White Dolphin between 5 July 2011 and 12 July 2011 with my dad and we both loved it there. In fact the only problem we had with the hotel was that we were only booked to stay for a week!

We stayed in a second floor apartment (with the balcony closest to the road) which is meant to sleep 8 people so the room was on the big size. It had everything you want from a hotel room. It was spacious, the bedrooms were tidy and had lots of storage space, a nice kitchen area with a dining table, a tv, air conditioning, two balconies (one pool facing the other to the rear), fresh towels, a clean bathroom, a walk-in shower... everything. I would definately book a pool facing balcony when you come to book to stay here as the views to the rear are of a brick wall so take my advice.

Downstairs the pool area was larger than I expected after seeing photos before I left. It was kept tidy and was never overcrowded. There was plenty of sun loungers and an outdoor area for the bar/restaurant.

The restaurant itself was amazing with a great menu, the food melted in your mouth and we ate really well while we were there. It was a little expensive but well worth the money you pay considering the size of the meals. Best place to eat in Malta bar none. Like all the local people we met, the waiters and staff were very friendly and helpful too, can't praise them enough.

Around and about the hotel there is plenty of English bars and restaurants. The bar we made a daily visit to was called the Bahhara Bar over the road from the hotel towards the harbour/bay. A really nice place to sit outside facing the sea to have a drink. Also there are some really nice people there especially the owner, Sergio.

So yeah all in all it was a fantastic hotel, a fantastic country and i'd love to go there again and if I do go back to Malta in the future then i'll be staying at the White Dolphin again for sure.

This place was all round great. We were a family & needed handicap access room.....All rooms qualified for this!!! Food was great & reasonable (breakfast was all you can eat & brilliant). Apartments were clean..Extra towels (unheard of in Spain) given on request. Room seemed like it was cleaned on request too. Seems like a lot of complainers on here whining about paying for all the extras AS YOU DO ALL OVER EUROPE cos you are paying PEANUTS in the first place. Nice touch was FREE clothes horse on balcony. TV remote was delivered by man who tuned it in!!! Only a couple of Euros a day & tons of channels. Room safe was very cheap too. The grocery service was unbelievable!! Order your groceries at bar & they are DELIVERED FREE TO YOUR ROOM at ASDA prices!!!!!!All staff were very nice & helpful. Leno the jack of all trades seemed to work 24/7 & was always cheerful. Bar prices were really good too & bar seemed to be open whenever there were customers wanting to drink!!! Pool area lovely & kid friendly. Pretty central, on front seawalk & ALWAYS available parking at gates to hotel. Our rooms had a view of a building behind us but we weren't buying the apartment, only using it for 5 days........& we were OUT mostly!!!
Overall, if returning to Malta would book here.

We just got back from here last week. Ive give it a 3 out of 5. We went on a package deal with Thomas cook and nearly missed our stop as the rep left the coach at the airport and nobody was there to tell us we were at the white dolphin. if i hadn't researched and seen pictures of the hotel on here we wouldn't have known to get off the coach!!

First impressions were fine, we headed up tor reception to be greeted by a male and female who gave us our room key, at this point another two parties were also waiting for their room key, and began to shout at the reception staff that they didn't want a 1 bed apartment with no sea view, they wanted an apartment with a sea view. they were told this was not possible as only studios had the sea view. The couple got very agitated, though they hadn't even seen the room yet and had specifically booked a 1 bedroom apartment knowing it didnt have a sea view (as stated when they booked?!)... in my opinion had no grounds to complain or speak to the staff in the manner they did!

Luckily for us, id booked a studio, and the view was AMAZING. Beautiful view of the sea and the small boats, and also a view of the pool. we spent many a night having drinks/food on the balcony and it was lovely. the cooking facilities were great, enough pots pans and cutlery, toaster, fridge and cooker. My only complaints room wise is that the walls are so thin you could hear every conversation next door were having.. i imagine this was the same for every room though! Another gripe, was that the maid didn't ever come in! She knocked one day while we were getting ready, fair enough, but never came back..so as the week went on the bathroom got a little grimy. As we were there for the week. i couldn't be bothered making a big deal of it. A fortnight would have been different!

Down at the bar we were always greeted by friendly staff and were informed that if needed they would do food shopping for you and bring it to your room 2 hours later. i found this a nice touch especially for the older residents, some of whom had difficulty walking to the main supermarkets and shops.

The pool area was never overly busy, though i think that was due to the fact that after 1pm, the sun would be gone due to the high wall that surrounds the hotel, people would be trying to squeeze their sunbeds into the one tiny spot that had sunlight, or be up as early as 8am to get the best spot. We couldnt be bothered with that, so we would head out and go to a lido in bugibba, i can recommend one called st georges. There were lidos much nearer but again a lot more expensive, there's one just up the road called Luzzu which was around 6.50 euro, 9 euro on a sunday. But i have to admit it looked gorgeous.

Back to the hotel, and i can fully recommend the restaurant i think it is called El garra and is open to the public as well as residents, it was lovely, always busy and had a nice feel. slightly expensive but well worth it, we ate really well on the island, but the white dolphins restaurant is the best by far. Only problem is there's no noise after 11pm so you cant really linger and relax with a bottle of wine afterwards.

On the whole we enjoyed our holiday, and would have no problem staying there again. if it werent in qawra. It was far too quiet for us, as was bugibba. We much preferred St Julians. But i can see the appeal for many. On the whole i would recommend this hotel, for the food, the staff, and the stunning view we had!

Room Tip: Book a studio instead of an apartment if you want!

stayed in the White dolphin in one of the 2 bedroom apartments and have to say that this was the best value for money holiday we have had for a long time. First of all, we had booked 2 one bedroom apartments but the owners very kindly changed us to a 2 bedroom which was just perfect for our needs. A lovely view; an extremely spacious apartment with everything that we needed and some of the nicest people that you would ever hope to meet.
Malta encourages you to explore and we were out every day getting to see all parts of the island using the great buses - an experience in itself.
The location of the apartments is quiet but within easy walking distance to everything that you need in terms of shops, bars restaurants ( and of course bus stops) And the added benefit that there was nothing to disturb your sleep - much needed after exploing and copious pints of Cisk!
The weather was an unexpected bonus and for the first week of april we had 7 days of sunshine with clouds only appearing for a few hours on one day.
Even got to have a little flutter in the nearby casino.
Malta is most definitely a hidden gem and worth a visit!

We booked the White Dolphin last minute after reading reviews for anoter hotel in Malta. We were very impressed! Myself and my husband (32 &38) travelled with my extended family which ranged from 21 to 74. The hotel is simple, clean and very basic but what more do you need when on holiday!! The rooms were spacious and the view (if you have a front view) was of the pool. The back rooms were facing a brick wall!!
The pool was small but sufficient!. The staff at the White Dolphin could not do enough for us! We arrived at around 10pm and they affered to cook us pizzas as we missed dinner time. They were friendly and chatty and even tried to teach us some of the Maltese lingo!!
The White Dolphin is about a 15 minute walk into the main square through the back roads or 25 mins along the coastal road!
All in all for a short break I think this hotel is great if you are not after too much!
