We have just returned from this hotel. I was a bit worried because of the reviews on this page. Not a 4 star by any means BUT the room was clean, beds changed every day as were the towels.
We didn't have a balcony, but the room we had was on the inside of the hotel so was quiet, which suited us! On the down side the pool area needs new beds and brollies and a better bar.
Also the lobby is very worn and needs updating. Breakfast is excellent with plenty of choice in a nice dining room with friendly staff. Buggiba is very nice too.

Just come home from a week in Malta where we stayed at the Crown Hotel. I must admit I was a little worried when I read the review on this horrid site. However I was very pleasantly surprised. The hotel was fairly quiet - No Students running around, rooms clean and tidy, with more then enough room in the en-suite. Everything worked fine. Our balcony didn't have a view but was nice. It looked out onto other balconies with a walk way in the middle but the hotel had made it nice with plants etc. The staff with friendly, the food was nice, hotel in a good position to walk to the front (which was only 5 mins away - not miles like one of the reviews quote).and frankly I thought it was a bargin. I wouldn't hesitate to return to the Crown Hotel.

I run a hotel in the uk and frankly this site is a nightmare as there are alot of of folk who expect five star hotels for 2 star terms.

We left as soon as we seen our room!traveling with a 3yr old,we expected at least clean this hotel was advertised as 4star spar hotel!!!!!the hotel was smelly an disgusting, the indoor pool area should carry a health warning, and the gym was not a gym but a dark room with a broken light!
The rooms are dark n dirty, with cigarette buts all over the so called balcony that faced a brick wall! This hotel should be closed down in my opinion,it's a disgrace, don't go there,
Feel sorry for the staff who have deal with the many complaints, an we were only there 2 hours!!!

Room Tip: There is none go elsewhere, honestly

We stayed here for a week end of Sept 2012. We had no complaints its just all a bit tired and needs a bit of TLC.
We were room only so we had a twin bedroom and a bathroom. Bedroom had a TV/mini fridge/drawes and wardrobe. 2 single beds which we pushed together but the room cleaner moved them back every day so every night we pushed them back again. The bathroom was simply shower toilet sink nothing fancy, not overly clean but the cleaners tried their best its just run down. the aircon in the roof didnt work it made a noise but was never cold.
We had a door that lead onto a very strange indoor balcony, we had no window/door that was outside so we never knew time of day/weather until we got outside.
Pool is on the roof and again its rundown and needed a really good clean so we didnt go in the pool, most of the beds were broken. Buffest style Breakfast was €6 each and they had everything you could want, there is also a cafe across the road that did full breakfast for €3.50 each
Staff were very friendly and always tried to help but you could tell they had had enough by this time in the season.
The indoor pool is in the basement and its about as big as 2 house size baths and is warm. To work the sauna you have to ask at reception to turn it on so we didnt bother.
The "gym" is 4 old machines in a very small room and the running machine was broken.
They have internet in the lobby which is €1 for 20mins
It is close enough to the center where all the restaurants are its about 10min walk to the bay.

Had only one night here and moved immediately after a full sleepless night.

If you don't mind noise, the hotel is OK but you can hear everything - including other rooms air conditioning. Beds are really cheap and hard. The walls are very thin so you can also hear conversations from all other rooms that surround the one you are in.

The only good thing about this hotel was the breakfast which was not fantastic but tasty and the food was hot.

Don't be fooled by the 4 star rating! On leaving the hotel, I stated to the manager that this was definitely not 4 star to which she replied:

'This is a 4 star hotel but our hotels have different 4 star ratings - 4 star gold, 4 star silver, 4 star bronze and 4 star standard. We are in the 4 star standard'

In other words, the ratings should be 4 star for their gold, 3 star for their silver, 2 star for their bronze and 1 star for their standard.

Stayed for 14 nights B&B at start of September and there are a number of good/bad points most of which are already covered. The hotel has a strange floor plan with some rooms having only one window with enclosed terrace and some rooms with a huge front window/doors leading onto a terrace, each room seemed to have a slightly different interior layout as well. Depending on which room you are given can affect the quality of your stay.

We had room 1310 leading onto a terrace which was fine, one large room with two beds and one bathroom with shower cubicle. Air con is noisy but with ear plugs it didn't stop you sleeping soundly. Rooms were cleaned each day with new towels and toilet roll if needed. There is a small fridge to keep bottles of water/juice in but its not very big but still a nice touch as it can be hot at night. Our belongings weren't touched at all despite my partner inadvertantly leaving valuable items lying around so no issues there. However, the couple we were with had room 1313 and had to get the shower curtain replaced as it was filthy and slashed and also had several ant invasions including one severe one in their bathroom for which they had to get housekeeping to deal with - not nice! This stemmed fromthe flower bed/pot outside not having been looked after and my guess is there is a huge antfarm within!

The hotel staff were generally helpful however they are obviously hindered by management as the hotel has its good points but is let down by general lack of TLC. Its rated at 4 star but has fallen foul of neglect and investment in recent times. Reception had to deal with a number of complaints from customers, some of which were trivial and not their responsibility and others where they were as helpful as could be. Peoples perceptions are different but a lot of complaints were from customers thinking the receptionists were some kind of tourist information folk and booking agents! The lounge bar is decent with free wifi and information on local bus routes, a local map which was invaluable at first and other touristy leaflets however the restaurant is on the 4th floor which seems strange. The breakfasts were adequate but repetitive and the only real complaint was the cheap coffee and orange juice which was the stuff you add water too. The staff were very nice and made sure tables were reset and food was replenished although some of the fresh fruit went quickly as a German tourist thought it was for his own packed lunch every day until he was politely told otherwise!

You can hire a kettle but I wouldn't recommend this as the one we were given was a travel kettle and you could tell it had been sitting for some time in reception! The safety deposits are kept in reception and are quite slim. You could fit passports/phone etc (slim items) but nothing bulky.

The lifts did smell a bit and did creak/groan however they worked fine, no worse than lifts in similar sized hotels i've stayed at in Spain.

The pool downstairs is really a large bathtub with a non functioning jacuzzi and electric sauna which wasn't very good. The roof pool is a decent size and gets the sun all day and has decent views of sea and inland. Parasols are available from bar but are on the small side as they tend to take off and the rooftop is only lined with a 4foot high wrought iron railing.

No sign of any students when we were there, apparently the last of them had left the week before so its a case of timing your stay out of term time!

The location of the hotel is just off the beaten track but only 5 minutes walk from the beach front and 10 mins from Bugibba bus station. There are also a number of bars/restuarants in the immediate vacinity and it is worth walking around the block (heading inland) to scope out what is there.

Overall, our stay was what we expected given the reviews we read but nothing to get so upset about if you don't expect the Ritz!

Room Tip: Ask for a room leading onto a terrace rather than an internal room or one with front balcony.

Working in the hotel industry myself I'm always wary of reading too much into Trip Advisor reviews before staying anyway, as I know only too well how overly critical they can be. I stayed with my Mum for a week at the start of September, and genuinely have no complaints about the place. Yes, in places it was a bit dated, and there was the odd maintenance issue floating about, but nothing worse than I've seen in the hotel I work in, which is also rated a 4*.
The staff were all lovely. Valentina on reception checked us in and out swiftly and efficiently, and was only too happy to help when we had a question or an issue with the key card. The restaurant staff we encountered (we only ate breakfast there as there were no veggie options at dinner) were all incredibly friendly and helpful, and the housekeeping staff that we met in the corridors were always friendly and approachable and said hello whenever we passed them.
The room had everything you could possibly need in it, and more. It had air conditioning, which you don't have to pay a surcharge for, a fridge, a tv if you watch tv while you're away, the bathroom actually had a bath, which is different from what I'm used to when I travel abroad. The room was also kept immaculate while we were staying there.
The location of the hotel was central, but not so close to the town centre that you would be disturb, but not so far away that you had to trek about, and plenty of places to run which was a bonus for me as I completed the Great North Run 2 days after our return.
This hotel is absolutely perfect for what you pay for it, just don't go into it expecting the Hilton or Ritz. I would have absolutely no reservations about staying here again or recommending it to a friend or family member. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Room Tip: We were in room 1101 and it was lovely. Very spacious, with a large balcony.
