Hotel Santana
Ranked #4 of 14 Hotels in St. Paul's Bay
Reviewed February 6, 2013

Just returned from a weeks stay at the Santana. This was our 3rd time at this Hotel. Great location. Sea 3 min's walk, Bus Station 2 min's. Yes they are doing up rooms, and there is sometimes a little noise, but nothing to worry about. The first room we were given was very small and smelt damp. We asked for a change and as we booked late we got a nice room at the back of the Hotel. Not a great outlook, no sunshine, but a nice up to date room. As we were only there for a week we were out and about, not sitting in our room.If you want the sun there is a nice sun terrace on the roof of this hotel and a swimming pool which is open in the summer. The bathroom was very modern with a walk in shower and plenty of hot water. Although it was kept clean, i feel it could have been better.I agree with others that one of the sheets was small, I complained and it was changed. The food was Ok. Plenty of choice for breakfast. and the Dinner had a different main meat every day. As for it not being hot, that was the fault of ignorant guests leaving the lids off the trays after taking their food. The entertainment was a quality I would excpect for this time of year, but there is a casino 5 min's away which is free to join (need to show passport) and if you are playing the slots you can get as much coffee and sandwiches as you like free.( I tipped the waitress 1 euro and she was happy)
Overall this hotel would be a 2/ 3 star in England. We had a very pleasant week and I think that most of the people that complain are the ones that want to pay 3 star prices and get 5 star treatment. If you are looking for a middle of the road Hotel in a great location, then I would recomend the Santana.
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR( and a little bit more)

Room Tip: Front of the Hotel are best and they cost more

We have stayed at this hotel for the second time, which gives you excellent value for money. The rooms are clean and serviced daily. At the moment up until March 60 rooms are being re-furbished with new bathrooms and new TV's. Don't let this put you off as this hotel is in a perfect location, with many restaurants and bars nearby. There are 2 outdoor pools on the roof and another attractive indoor pool so whatever the weather you can have a swim. Also the hotel has an excellent Beauty & Massage Treatment room, believe me any treatment by the resident masseuse Eszter is worth evry penny spent you will never want a massage from anybody else after one. If you have the opportunity and go early on in the year best to ask for a front facing room.

Room Tip: If you have the opportunity request a front facing room.

Returned yesterday after a weeks' stay at this hotel and I can only say that it is definitely not a 4* hotel. The communal areas are fine, clean, relatively modern but the rooms really let this hotel down. Our 2 rooms were on the side of the hotel where you get little, if no sunshine. Discovered on the last day that the only way you will get any sun on the balcony in your room is for you to pay for a 'superior' room. The only thing these rooms have going for them (apart from the sun) is that they are bigger so I dont know how they can be classed as superior.
We were told by our travel company that the hotel provided tea and coffee facilities-well they dont, or at least they dont-unless you pay extra so take your own kettle etc. I called the hotel before I left and was told that I could hire a kettle, for a charge of 3.50 euros a day, a little steep as you can buy a travel kettle for under a tenner and get to keep it.(Which I did) The sheets didnt fit the beds so you woke up in a tangle every morning and the towels are well past their sell by date. The room I had smelt of sewage every time someone on a upper level flushed the loo but was told by management that was due to the excessive rain that they had had, I could have changed rooms but my 91 year old Father had the room next door and they couldnt find us 2 rooms together. There was mould around the bath sealant and cracked floor tiles.
The food was mediocre but edible, although sometimes a little boring as it was the same. The saving grace was that it was self service so if you did find something you liked you could have plenty of it.
There is little entertainment but that could be the time of year. The indoor pool is small but adequate, and we didnt use the outdoor pool as it is unheated.
The thing that seems to keep this hotel surviving seems to be the staff. They are ALL helpful, friendly and speak very good English. The location of the hotel is pretty good too, just a few minutes or so walk to the bus station, a few bars and cafe and a small supermarket are also in close vicinity.
All in all,as other reviewers have said, this hotel, with a little TLC could be much better. ( I understand there is a refurbishment programme on going)

Room Tip: If you can afford it and like to sit on the balcony in the afternoon, then pay for a room at the fr...

When entering the Hotel it looked very nice but there it ended.
Room.
No chairs so had to bring in white plastic chair from balcony but had to clean it before using.
No table on balcony
Beds, firm mattress , sheets too small, bottom sheet tucked in at top of mattress but did not reach the bottom,
Top sheet not enough tucked in so when you moved it all came out.
Pillows a piece of foam about 2/ 3 inches thick.
Cleaning was not good ,floor not vacumned could write in dust in places, toilet not always cleaned.
FOOD
Breakfast all the usual things, 5 kinds of cereals ,eggs, boiled, fried or,scrambled, bacon sausages, potato slices ,baked beans .
Because it is buffet and put in the large pans it does not stay hot.
There was a cold section of cheese 2 meats and yogurt.
Evening Dinner.
Salad 12 plus different dishes all in dressings.
Hot food, but not hot, soup, choice of 3 different spicy meat dishes ,1 fish, 1 meat on carvery.
Veggies all bought in frozen and not cooked properly some unable to get fork in.
Every day French Fries except on Gala meals when it was Potato Croquets.
NO ROAST POTATOES or Plain Boiled Potatoes.
Gala meals same meat and fish but dressed up different.
Sweets
Selection of gateaus , fruit salad and ice cream.

My rating is for over all as some areas were better than others in Service and Cleanliness.

Room Tip: In room 043 ground floor was quiet but could be different in summer as there were bars around. Can no...

I have visited this nice personal hotel several times for the past few years. Starting from a sudden change (after first night..) from an other hotel on the most western part of the island .
At the very beginning I got a feeling of very warm and professional personnal in the Reception.
This feeling has enlargened and has had it's resuults.
Nowadays I visit the hotel 4 to 5 times a year, have the same apartment and well come again as far as can be seen.
The willingness of the Personnal to solve any possible prpblems is important to me.
An other important thing is the new 'Wi-Fi'-connections in every room. A very good improvement to
last year.
The Hotel seems also to be paying a little bit more attention to the weariness of certain parts of the
Hotel...
The Breakfast Menu is still pretty low on wegetables and so I in any case had to make the decision not to have the breakfast..(...can't stand the bacon an eggs all the time...)
They say the Gym is getting improvements but that's what they said in October too...we'll see..
'Shipping problems ' is the answer. 93 km to Sicily.. Big problem ? Well, obviously.. I just happen to practice one hour at least daily and for me this is a little problem.
All in all a very nice hotel where it is a very large availability to different ways of having a nice holliday. Can recommend !

We arrived early at the Santana as our Easyjet flight landed about 10am.
This was no problem and we checked in quickly.
When we got to our room, I was very disappointed. It was dark, tatty, overlooking waste ground on a low floor.
We asked to be moved. I was told that when booking we had requested a double bed and that the doubles are at the back of the hotel. I had also requested a higher floor, as I feel they are more secure- less chance of anybody breaking into your room, but this hadn't been taken into account.
I don't consider myself to be a demanding guest but the room just didn't feel right. Our balcony was easily accessible from the waste ground.
We were allowed to change our room on Xmas Day.
I wonder now if the maltese that were in the hotel for Xmas Eve celebrations had been allocated better rooms?
The rest of our stay was very good. Our 4th floor room at the front of the hotel was clean and comfortable. Good shower. Good heating as the evenings could be a little cold. Public areas of the hotel are very nice, clean. Food, plenty of choice and hot. Wine and beers not too expensive in the restaurant and bars. Indoor pool and jacuzzi very nice. I had a massage and eye-brow shape the day I arrived, very good value. We saw the rooftop pool, this is a good size, with showers and loos to the side of it.
The front of the hotel is a nice place to sit with a drink, a sun trap, and watch the world go by.
Hotel location is good, next to bars, restaurants, pasty shop and chippy just up the road. Minutes walk from the bus station. There's also a reading room to the left of reception where you can borrow books.
Would we stay here again? Yes, it's a nice comfy base to explore
Malta. Choose a room at the front of the hotel though.
It 's a shame about the waste ground to the rear of the hotel. It would make a lovely landscaped/pool area.
Staff were friendly and attentive.

Room Tip: Choose a front facing room.

Just returned from a week's holiday at the Santana - in a so called 'superior room' I dread to think what the standard rooms are like. The sheets and pillowslips had holes in them and were so thin and do not fit the beds properly, so every morning we woke up on bare matresses. The sheets were not changed during our visit. The food in the hotel restaurant not up to a 4* hotel, I don't know how the stars are awarded in Malta, but anywhere else this hotel would have been probably 3* at the most. The only thing about the 'superior room' was we did not overlook the kitchens. The bathroom was very 'tired' with old towels which were practically grey in colour.

The only thing this hotel has gong for it is it proximity to the bus station so you are able to get around the island easily. We were on an 'all inclusive' package, and to be quite honest the lunches were very disappointing, and at dinner you were given a glass of wine you could get another one if you could find a waiter who would serve you.

This is the first time I have put a review on tripadvisor, and I wished that I had looked at this site prior to booking this holiday. We will certaintly not be going back nor recommending this hotel to anyone.
