We have just returned from another great stay at the Hotel Santana for the 4th time. We stayed All Inclusive and could not fault it. Large Superior room with kitchen area, dining area, lounge area, kept clean daily. All inclusive was very good it is advertised 11am - 11pm which is more than adequate as you get breakfast, lunch and dinner as well, there is only so much you can eat and drink surely. Restaurant has had a refurbishment food still very good, my hubby is a fussy eater but he enjoyed every meal, lunch again was varied and plentiful, waitresses/waiters very welcoming and friendly, as were the reception staff and bar staff as always. We used to take our children up to the pool on the roof every morning at 8.30am before it got too hot and every morning it was being hosed and cleaned, yes there are a few chairs that needed repairing but nothing to get too stressed about - just get another one. You will of course always get people who complain that there are no chip butties on the menu or all inclusive should mean more, but we could not fault it. We actually came home with £200 of our spending money because everything we needed was "All Included". On our early morning departure the barman in the cafeteria made us all coffee and hot chocolates before our taxi to the airport at 5.30am, all complimentary. Nice gesture.

We enjoyed our stay at the Santana Hotel in Qawra. Hotel is well located, a short walk to the beach and near Bugibba resort. Breakfast is adequate. First room allocated was very dark and very small. We asked for a change of room and this request was granted the following morning at a a charge of 4 lira - worth every penny. Staff are very pleasant always and speak good english. Amenities are average and perhaps more suitable to a 3 star hotel grading rather than 4 star. Pool deck area is in need of refurbishment and a steam cleaning. Pool sunbeds may need replacing. Room although air conditioned, was really like a hot house at times. So maybe the air conditioning needs to be up-graded. Staff are very pleasant and helpful and location is ideal.

Hotel Santana St Pauls Bay Malta
Date of visit 18th Aug 07
Duration 14 days
We booked after seeing the hotel website. We chose a superior room and after careful consideration we chose to stay on an "all inclusive" basis.
At the time of booking we expained that we were traveliing with our 18 year old daughter and that she planned to stay for 1 week longer than us - no problem they said. She could move to another room for the remaining period but for the first two weeks we would have a small suite with 2 bedrooms. This sounded exactly what we needed and the accomodation looked lovely on the website. We advised that we would be arriving at about 6.00 am - again , no problem said the hotel - our room may not be ready but we could have a shower and breakfast when we arrived and the room would be free for 11am.
We arrived and found that the welcome was less than we expected. We could use a small room to shower and lock our luggage up in a cupboard. The rooms were terribly hot and no towels were provided until we requested some. Breakfast was not available for another hour and a half ! We appeared to b e a bit of a headache for the receptionist.
We got our room quite quickly though - about 9.30am. We gave it back at 9.35am! The room was a large grubby space with two single beds and a camp bed and a small dining table. Absolutley nothing like we had seen on the website. We were moved to another room that did have two rooms ( no door though). The smaller room had no wardrobe, drawer or bedside light or mirror. it did, however, have a cupboard that housed a slightly grubby fridge , a cooker hob and mini oven and sink! WHY? We weren't planning on cooking. It wasmarginally better than the first room the hotel allocated but still needed updating and nowhere near 4* standard. We only ever got enough towels for two and when we asked for extra pillows ( our daughter got a chest infection and needed to sleep sitting up) they were provided by removing the pillows from our beds! The state of the pillows were horrid anyway!
The swimming pool and upper bar areas were filthy and the loungers and chairs covered in soot and dust. The area was not hosed or cleaned once during our stay. One guest was seen repairing loungers for his family - they were in a very poor state.
All inclusive at this hotel is a big no no! It shoudl be called a little inclusive some times! We couldn't have a bottle of sparkling water at the table - you had to order loads of glasses of the stuff instead. Stupid and very petty. Couldn't have a drink before 11amor after 11pm , couldn't have lots of things really!
When we requested the use of beach towels and a safe we were told that, because we weren't using a travel company we couldn't charge anything to our room so we had to pay upfront. No problem with that just irksome - yet when we checked out it had also been charged to our room too. We were ripped off basically and although we started to argue our case - by that time we had had enough , it was a small amount of money so we just paid up. The management should be ashamed of this practice.
The only thing that was passable was the evening meals and even those got boring by the second week. To conclude, this hotel is past its best. It needs a complete overhaul and the receptionists could do with some customer service training as could some of the bar staff. The pool area is filthy . It should be cleaned at least once if not twice a day and the loungers and chairs need replacing. Bad show Hotel Santana - don't know how you keep 4 stars. Our daughter didn't stay for the 3rd week!

I stayed at the Santana for 7 nights. The hotel is very old and in need of renovation.
The rooms was OK but he twin beds were very hard and creaky.
I had 3 tvs in the first day as they just didnt work. I got ripped off with the Pay TV. Beware!

We were so excited to arrive in Malta on our first holiday in a few years and had decided to treat ourselves to a 'superior room' for a bit of luxury. We thought as the hotel was meant to be 4 star that we would be safe enough. We arrived at our hotel very early in the morning after an over-night flight and were exhausted and couldn't wait to get to our room to sleep but as soon as we entered our room we were so upset! The room was filthy, the bedspread felt sticky, the bathroom was disgusting and above all it was tiny and we could see nothing 'superior' about it at all!

We tried to ring our rep but as it was only around 7.30 am he wasn't available and we had a horrible couple of hours wanting just to go home. But eventually we spoke to the hotel manager who disagreed with us that there was any problem but eventually moved us to a much nicer room (well it was clean and a lot bigger). At last we felt comfortable enough to get some rest.

I have to say that although the hotel is not what i would class as 4 star, we did eventually enjoy our stay. The matter was handled well and the staff were friendly enough. Breakfast was typical of European hotels and service was very good. The Trattoria underneath the hotel was lovely and we ate there a couple of nights- the waiter was very nice.

The hotel is in a good location near to the bus station, with plenty of pubs and restaurants around, although the real night life is in nearby Buggiba. I personally preferred it's quieter location. The cafe bar was also very nice at night as you can sit out on the street until late having a few drinks. The hotel also organised barbecue nights etc. although we preferred to go out at night, it's a good idea for families.

I don't think I'd stay here again but i think my initial disappointment did put me off. It is ok if you don't expect too much.

  • Liked — It did have plenty of facilities and was good for families.
  • Disliked — Our initial room was not clean.
