The hotel is well located close to shops, restaurants and the bus stop for Valetta and the Ferry Port. We stayed half board in room 3055 which faced onto the street. There was quite a lot of noise from traffic. The uninspiring, unwelcoming reception area is equally matched by some, not all, uninspiring, unwelcoming reception staff. Some are not polite, not concerned and lack motivation.

The room had twin beds, bedside cabinet, wardrobe, mirror,TV
and ceiling fan. The bathroom had bath, shower, mirror, sink,
shaver socket and constant hot water. There was a balcony and 2 chairs. The towels and sheets are changed every day by very pleasant ladies, but they are frayed and worn ( Not the ladies the towels and sheets). There are charges for fridges, kettles etc if not included in your deal. The lift is very small. Just enough room for 2 people and their bags.

Hot/cold buffet breakfast/dinner is served in a pleasant room. The food is plentiful but not exciting. You wont go hungry but maybe
bored by it after a week. You have to ask for ice cream.
The pool has plenty of sun loungers and parasols. These have seen better days but serve their purpose. There is a childrens pool. The main pool is very deep with a few steps into it. There is a snack bar near the pool. There is an indoor pool and fitness room.

There was entertainment each evening. Unfortunately this was different singers doing the same songs for 5 of the evenings!

The hotel is being renovated at the moment. The older rooms look shabby and dated. The newer rooms look of a good standard. There is an issue with the state of the carpets in the hallways and stairs. This will only be cured by removing them. I don't think cleaning is enough.

At the moment the hotel is only 2* at best. It feels shoddy, dated and lacks that little bit of luxury you may want on your hols. Having said that everything worked. ie Shower plenty of hot water, toilet flushed, ceiling fan.

What I find unacceptable is the attitude of some of the staff.

If you get a cheap deal maybe go for it. Based on my experince I wouldn't stay there again.

My wife and I have just returned from a two week stay at the San Pawl and it was not the worst we have stayed in but far from the best. There was no air conditioning available ( awaiting repair ) for the two weeks and with the temperatures in the eighties and above , night time as well , it was very uncomfortable. The answer to keeping the dining room cool was to open all the windows and give the flies first option on the cold buffets ,then the dining room manager had a "brainwave" and got a hold of one fan for the large dining room which was OK if you could get near it , however the food was not bad. New arrivals are always palmed off with the rooms facing a backstreet that looks like Beirut on bucket day so if you go " insist" on a move and don't unpack your case till you get it. The hotel is generally clapped out but Malta is a great holiday resort ( apart from the flies ) and the people are very friendly.

First visit to Malta, first impression is this what Malta is like? We were ready to leave the next morning. Room on the 4th floor, carpets tatty, dirty and taped together. Curtains falling apart, fridge seen better days, ceiling fan rickety and this was supposed to be the superior room good help the guests in the standard room.

Decided to stay and venture the island instead as there was not much else keeping us in the resort. Complained about the room and was eventually moved on our second week which was surprisingly better but only slightly as there was no carpet (2nd floor) views onto a busy street.

Air con in restaurant not working for duration of our stay, breakfast plates enough to cater for a small child but watch out as soon as you take a breather to let your food go down the plates are eagily removed by the waiters!

Food was ok but lacked choice of vegetables if you dare ask for chips make sure you have a child to eat them as they do not provide for adults. On a possitive note if u want to cool down after a meal ask for ice cream although it is not advertised that it is available.

The hotel staff were freindly although entertainment was very poor only really came to life on the weekend to cater for the locals for a bit of a dance.

We must of witnessed 90% of complaints poor holiday rep because she had to take the brunt of the complaints.

Think very carefully about a holiday in the ST. pauls bay area completely as it is not a very clean area to be in especially avoid San Pawls hotel at all cost unless u like what you read.

The possitve thing about the holiday was that it enabled us to venture out and explore malta and found other areas of great taste so will hopefully return.

We have just returned from a last minute hol to this hotel, we were expecting cheap and chearful and that is what we got! On arrival it seems modern and reception had a nice marble floor and staff friendly, we arrived before check in time and they did get us in our room quickly. Once you get to first floor the flooring is a mankie old carpet, We had only booked a basic room with ceiling fan, when we got in room it was a "superior" room! that meant you got air con, which you definately need, fridge and hair drier, the furniture and beds weren`t superior, my bed had a colapsed matress and when my husband woke up in morning he cut his leg on a spring sticking out of his matress. I did show housekeeping and they did change both by the next night. The furniture was very old and tired, the bathroom wasn`t very clean all along edge of floor was dirt and dust toilet was dirty too had to clean myself, bath kept blocking up when had shower. the beds were made every day but they did not clean room or bathroom, the towels were changed occasionally, i dont know why they put tv`s in room all you can watch is CNN alright if you like news all time. No tea making facilities either. the breakfast was basic 3 choices of egg, beans, toms, fried bread and saus one day then bacon the next, no choice of fresh fruit which i thought there would be in a country like Malta where it is picked fresh every day. Entertainment is ok Maltese Gordon Elvis is a laugh, sat and sun is very busy better entertainment on and alot of locals come. one last thing BEWARE OF TIMESHARE! people hang about outside this hotel telling you to just spend an hour looking at their hotel and take some brochures home to show family and friends and they say it is not time share, 7 hours later they give you the news £12,000 and maintenance fees and an apartment is yours for 1 week every year. This is our first visit to Malta and we loved it , will be back next year but will spend our hard earned money on a better hotel.

After seeing a card in the travel agents window we decided to ask for more details, the holiday was for 2 adults 2 children all half board,we were told it was one bedroom with sofa beds for the children who are both aged 12,after getting conformation from the manager of the travel agent that the room had separate living quarters we booked,we were given free car parking.Great start, then my step-daughter was unable to go because of a current medical condition,we informed the agent and had to pay an underoccupancy fee,we did and also noticed that we had paid for the car parking, again we informed the agent ,who told us we would get a cheque back, that was at bthe beginning of july and has of 3rd september still waiting. When we arrived at Malta,a place i have been to many times without a single problem we were taken to the San Pawl hotel 3 star.We got our room key and was greeted by an 8ft x 8ft room with 3 camp beds ,one single wardrobe and a chest of drawers.we complained that night only to be told no rooms available. In the morning still no room available, and our rep was to busy to deal with us.After phoning head office in malta we moved hotel to appartments, making our own way there and paying 250 euros extra.Thomas cook lied to us about the accomadation,3 star hotel, with no air con,no fridge,no tea of coffee facilities and most rooms ,so called family rooms 8ft x 8ft,if my step-daughter had come with us four beds would have been in that room blocking the entrance to the en-suite.Thomsas cook have offered no help in this matter, blaming the hotel, but they could have done more,we were sold a holiday that we did not get and are taking the matter further.

On arrival reception very nice. Tiny lift to room on 3rd floor. State of carpets on corridors disgusting stained and in bad condition a vac might have helped.

Very old ceiling fan that shook like mad and did little to cool the room that was very dated and not very clean. The room overlooked a back street very boring view. Decided to upgrade to a superior room at a cost to one with a pool view paid money but did not check room first (should have i know) superior it was not though air con was appreciated, Moved to the room only to find another view of a back street went to reception explained we wanted to be overlooking the pool so that if all sunbeds taken we could sunbathe on balcony and that we had spoken to the manger about this the day before, receptionest just stared as if to say tough. She eventually said we could move the next day if a room was available (gave up). The room this time was on the first floor carpet disgusting and stuck together with gaffer tap not very safe, and on our final mornig a pile of dog /cat turd met us on the landing that stayed there most of the morning(though staff did cover it for a while with talcum powder. On last day asked if we could keep our room till leaving early evening yes i could have a room but not the one I was in and I had to pay 16 euros which was fine until i got to an even worse room than the previous 2. no towels and the show did not work, went to reception to be greeted by the now familiar stare and 3 mins wait to be acknowledged sorted shower eventually.

One day in the reception area the manager and a holiday maker were having a very loud heated argument I did wonder if it was going to become physical.

The staff I would not decribe as friendly most of the time rude.
One waiter was always cheerful and always singing.

The one positive comment iI can make is the food at the hotel was excellent great choice and a varied menu congratulations to the chefs.
i have never felt the need to write a review before but I had to say this was the worst hotel I have stayed in and I have stayed in many hotels in many counties.

We stayed at the san pawl hotel from the 12 - 27 aug 08. cost us £1200 for two rooms for to weeks. Me and my brother stayed in room 309 and my mum step dad and younger brother stayed in 314. both rooms where dirty and the celing fans dident work all that well. 10 days out of 14 me and my brother had a chest infection, i can only put this down to how dirty the pool was because most of the quest had the same chest infection. on our last day my mum laid some clothes out for her my brother and step dad to travel in, and they went off to the beach. When they got back the room was empty, clothes had gone, personal papers, gifts that we had bought. When we imformed the manager he wasent helpful at all and kept saying the maid is aloud one mistake. Anyways after plenty off kicking off the maid turned up with two bags of ours and said sorry then walked off. My mum opened the bags in reception and the gifts where still missing half the clothes and all the personal papers. We told the manager once again, and he wonderd off. About an hour later he turned up with the gifs but no clothes or the papers. He was honest with us and told us they were in the maids room. My advice to anyone thinking of booking san pawl is not to. Honest two words sums up this holtel, Faulty Towers.
