“lovely views , lovely hotel”
Reviewed August 12, 2010

We have just returned from our first visit to Malta and have to say that the views from the hotel were gorgeous. The staff were friendly, polite and helpful . We were greeted with smiles and treated the same throughout the holiday. We loved the food and the choices given. English breakfast was available although you had to pay separately for that - no problem we were aware of this when booking holiday and found that there was a large selection of fruit, juices, fruit , cereals, toast and various rolls, meat and cheese for breakfast. Although no yoghurts! Pool was good with fantastic views over the bay and lovely to walk along the promenade to Buggiba where there are an assortment of shops, restuarants and bars to keep everyone happy. We found there was plenty of transport and loved the old buses that rattled along at what seemed high speed, with no air con and music playing loudly - but absolutely loved it. The only grumble we did have was that our fridge did not work and could not be replaced at short notice. Needed a cold drink and they do not offer coffee/tea making facilities. Everything else was great, would go back again definitely. Just need to add which I think is important - Hotel was clean.

Our stay at this hotel was very enjoyable. The staff were very friendly, kind and helpfull. The location was ideal and the pool area was wonderful. The restaurant was always lovely and cool and the staff in the restaurant always met you with a welcoming smile,The air condition in our bedroom was not that good and the bathroom needed a bit of work doing to it but we were told this is part of Maltas charm. We did like the location of the room as this overlooked the square and we could sit on our balcony and watch the world go by.We would definitely recommend this hotel to our friends and when we return to Malta will stay in this hotel again.

Good Hotel in good location 5 Min walk from centre good Chinese restaurant across road. The pizzeria in hotel is great there's also a fish restaurant which we didn't try out. The pool bar was expensive €2.60 for 2 small glasses of coke!
BREAKFAST !
If you want a full English Breakfast you have to pay around €4.70. the breakfast the hotel provides is cheese, laughing cow spread, ham, variety of cereals, toast ,buns, bread, jam, honey, bananas & kiwi, soft drinks coffee & tea. NO bacon sausage egg etc etc.

The Room is in need of updating loads of jobs have been botched & the handy man seems to love silicone/instant nails. shower is ok if your 4ft & under to hire the safe in room is €20 ! best view would be of the harbour but either way is very quiet at night. cleaner came everyday bringing fresh towels and making the beds. Take your own hair-dryer as the one in room cuts out after a couple of minutes use. Air con in our room turned hot during the night woke up boiling!

The lift in the hotel needs ripping out and replacing!

Overall review is good hotel for getting your head down but don't go here expecting anything special because you will be very disappointed !

The staff seem very friendly

Our family have just reurned from the best 4th trip to malta, but 2nd to our little gem ,the Gillieru. We were welcomed like family, and this is without a doubt the best hotel, and position on the island. The staff are amazing! Raymond, angelic Maria,Marie-rose,Charles,Tania,etc,they organized Mitchell's dairy free iccream for his allerges, and when our daughter Robyn had sunstroke, Patrick gave us bags of ice in a bag.We love the location, intimacy of this lovely hotel, views are still breathtaking 2nd time around! you feel like your positioned in the sea! food was super, rooms spotless. Marie-rose organised car hire through the hotel,60 euroes for 3 days, including insurance, and deleivered to the hotel! fantastic, and we went to gozo, blue lagoon at last,as we kissed goodbye the staff there were tears,we fall deeper in love with this magic of Malta, and this fab hotel.

Hotel was in a fantastic location overlooking St Pauls Bay. Our Room (505) overlooked the front but had a double balcony overlooking the fishermans harbour. The rooms could do with a little updating wrt showers and sheets that fit the beds and improvment of the aircon. But when weighing up everything especially the price one cant complain really.
Da Rosi restaurant opposite, the hotels own Gillieriu Fish restaurant and Tarragon are all less than 5 minutes away and are all superb !!

We stayed at the Gillieru for a joint family celebration for my husband's 70th and his brother and sister-in-law's forthcoming Ruby Wedding Anniversary. The hotel was good-a bit dated. The food in the restaurant was a bit unimaginative with the vegetables one night just a choice of sprouts!! The pool was excellent with stunning view of the harbour. The food at the pool bar was lovely - fresh and plenty of choice. If you decide to book this hotel - do ask for a harbour view. We were overlooking the street. We booked a trip on the sightseeing bus on the South side of the island. This was very enjoyable. The highlight of our week was a boat trip which we booked directly on the promenade on the Mermaid. This was lovely. The staff on board were helpful and courteous. They rounded off the trip - some 6 hours long with melon given out by the owner - a lovely touch. What we really missed - something we are told is now normal in European hotels - no tea/coffee making facilities and no tea/coffee after dinner.

Got back from Malta last night and felt I should share our brilliant holiday.
The service at the hotel was great. Our room had a sea view which was absolutely stunning with views looking over St Pauls Bay, where little boats are coming and going all day. The maid came in every day & cleaned the room, changed our towels daily and changed the bed a few times in the 2 weeks of our stay.
The pool is small but felt like it was ours, as not too many people ever go in. Not enough sun umbrellas around th pool area.
We were on bed/breakfast which we found to be ample, with cereals, ham & cheese, lovely fresh bread, fruit & juice. The service in the restaurant was great with really friendly staff.
The Gillieru Hotel was a short walk to shops, bars & restaurant but we were cheated out of 30euros in a bar on the seafront, but put it behind us as most places are really trustworthy.
We will definately stay at The Gillieru again. Thank you to all the staff there.
