Room was basic but had everything we needed. Excellent location and handy for buses all over the island. Fridge was just about cold enough after maintenance man adjusted it and water in bathroom always right temperature.

Breakfast buffet was really good and all staff helpful. Only downside was that the pool is seawater so I just couldn't bring myself to swim in it and seemed like very few other residents could either.

Room Tip: If you ask for a sunny room, it won't have a sea-view.

Excellent location.Public Areas good, but need refreshing.Style is tired and require new fabrics,
wood detailing needs refurbishing [ furniture and joinery],lamp shades could be replaced.basically
a timely FF&E refurb.

The lift: If this could be updated that would be good [to match public areas].The noise from the lift
is not acceptable.A new one would be better [most of the major suppliers can supply].

The rooms are where trouble lays:

The rooms need a complete make over as follows.
New Bed frames and mattress's,new joinery items, wardrobes, dressers, chairs and sofa's,
mirrors,lighting,new sheets,pillows [to Hilton Standard],bed throws.New window sheers and
new curtains with blackout.
A proper mini fridge.Electric hard wired safe's.Televisions that deliver quality local channels and clarity of image and Sat service. NO VISIBLE CABLES [yes, it can be done].
The bathrooms should be stripped back to structure, non are acceptable. This is where you
should spend in order to ensure those many hidden things are fitted and work properly such as:
Drainage,Modern brassware, damage resistant joints at walls and floors to bath's,wc's,basins,
Anti bath and basin flood devices,Talk to the manufacturers direct, not contractors, look at how
Hilton or Intercontinental Hotel's deal with these problems/I am sure they would help you.Do not
rely upon an amature Interior Designer. As I said spend on the bathrooms maybe build a test room to check all of the above.

The restaurant will be good if the Chef is good and then the staff are good and if the food quality is good the customer is happy and will come back.

Your breakfast is poor and your Dinner is poor.I think you know this. The layout of your hot counter and cold counter are not working. You need to re-plan this area to avoid people bumping.Go and see how others do it,go and have breakfast in other hotels to see how other
upscale hotel's deal with it.

I enjoyed my week with you, don't get upset at crit's deal with it one by one.You have the basis of a real winner.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms next to the lift,do try to get a room with a sea view.

After holidaying here last year & enjoying our stay we decided to return for a week of sunshine the receptionist Maryrose treated us as long lost friends home from home we were unable to have a harbour view sadly. The hotel its self has not changed & is in need of a refurb this take place in December we are told but the hotel is clean. They do though have problems with breakfast food which is all we booked for as there are to many good restaurants around the area. Good swimming pool great views lovely area. The hotel is resonable & I think you get what you pay for, the staff try their hardest & that is all you can ask. It appears that some people enjoy giving places bad knocks but people go here because for what you get. Almost everyone in the hotel had been many times before so that tells you something.

Room Tip: ask for sea view

Gillieru Harbour Hotel

If booked with a sea view, it’s has panoramic views across St Pauls Bay. Ideal for relaxing and not too far from local restaurants and bus stops.
A great location. We stayed just for a week and although keeping an open mind, we had booked for half board but soon changed to B & B after a poor dinner on the first night. It had been prepared and cooked off site being ‘stodgy’ and luke warm. They have franchised the cooking to a very poor standard.
The breakfast is very basic and on one occasion we discovered under cooked sausages. After showing the staff, instead of withdrawing the food and re-cooking, they smiled and carried on serving!
This was just the start of a very disappointing week at this Hotel. Although the staff are very friendly and helpful, the hotel management badly needs ‘shaking up’ as this Hotel has great potential. Certainly not 4 star! best 2 star at the most. The Maltese Tourist Authority have something to answer for and should re assess the standard of this hotel. The rating was most probably done some 25 years ago and standards and expectations have changed since then as this Hotel has stood still since its conception.
If you like under cooked food with limited choice, noisy elevators that keep you awake through the night if your unlucky to have been assigned a room next to the lift, (we requested and moved to another room at the other end of the building on the second day), grey worn out towels, thread bare and grey bed sheets, 50% of the sun loungers around the pool broken and worn out, etc then this is the place for you.
Comments given by the staff that the Hotel was being closed from November for re-furbishing is badly overdue but I wonder what will be done. The dining room décor needs upgrading, interior lighting addressed, the bathrooms want stripping out and re-tiling, new bathroom fittings and showers fitted, upgrade the furniture, the noisy elevator replaced with modern mechanics and décor, air conditioning upgraded to run silent during use, quality food available….etc, etc. so much needs to be done and I hope they can achieve it before next season but if not, sadly, this hotel is one to miss.
The pictures show the thread bare towels, vents collapsing from the ceiling, worn out bed sheets and pillow cases, the ‘lethal’ drainage channel around the pool area where the plastic grill has broken and not been replaced. The list goes on, …………….but, the views are great!

We are regular visitors to this hotel and I am known as an advocate for it. Later in the year the hotel is closing for a much needed refurbishment, and parts were in preparation at the time of our stay. The hotel staff are excellent, rooms are cleaned and there is a very friendly atmosphere. The owner died earlier this year and the restaurant services have been contracted out to a third party, a local restaurant owner. It is here that the problems begin - as there is a massive difference between running a restaurant and running a "hotel restaurant". For example, in the hotel about 150 guests have to move through in just over 2 hours. Very few restauants have this problem. The new restaurant managers have a lot to learn in a very short time.

The quality of food at both breakfast and dinner is limited and, at times, very basic and of poor quality - we had half board and were disappointed, To be fair, on a couple of occasions evening meals were outstanding, but this was the exception rather than the rule. Too often cuts of meat were low quality, eg bacon masquerading as gammon, and it was reported that the sweet and sour pork contained spam. Often the main curse in the evening was barely warm, as covers were left off when they were not in use.

Lots of guests complained about the meal service to the hotel, and it is known that information was passed on to the restaurant manager, but the responses were only at the "lip service" level. Eg complaints about the lack of fresh fruit at breakfast was followed by the introduction of segments of orange, and a few days later by segments of melon. Sausages were regularly on the breakfast menu, but on all but 2 days these were frankfurters.

The lack of understanding of running such a restaurant was shown also in the layout, which, on occasions, could have led to danger for the guests. There is clearly room for much improvement when compared to past standards. Hopefully the coming refurbishment will provide some, especially to the fabric of the hotel, but the problems with the restaurant are of greater concern. These latter problems will probably only be solved if the new restaurant management listens carefully to what the guests and hotel management have to say, and makes changes which show more regard for guests needs than for short term profitability.

The fact that the hotel is in such a great location will probably mean that we will continue to use it, but the jury is still out as to whether we will ever again have half board!

NB In the ratings below it would be helpful if, for service, it were possible to separate the hotel staff from the restaurant. The hotel is certainly 5 star, but the restaurant is generally 1 - 2 star, though some of the staff there are very friendly and extremely helpful.

Room Tip: Try to opt for a "Sea View" room

We've been to this hotel before- we love its location and views from the terrace. This time was very disappointing.Things seemed to be 'winding down' before a refurbishment and no one seemed to be bothered about customer care. There are many good restaurants close by, so we only booked breakfast, and that was extremely basic.
It was sad to see this hotel-with such a lot of potential- looking so tired and run down.
Let's hope the refurbishment goes ahead and results in improvements- we'd be happy to pay a little more to enjoy our stay there again!
