“nice but so many students”
Reviewed July 20, 2011

We have just returned from this hotel. we paid for a sea view and we had a stunning sea view on the 5th floor. The room was nice bathroom a little tired and we got free air condition which was a bonus.Safe hire 12 euro a week . If you want to watch Tv which we didnt you have to pay deposit for remote otherwise it dont work. Bed made and clean towels every single day a bonus

The downside well over 20 young students from floor 1 to 2 to 3. Setting alarms off. The lift never or rarley came up to floor 5 we had to walk down 4 flights to the restraunt. We had friends on the second floor who begged staff to change there room due to the noise. And where were the students gaudians/teachers over the pub. The students had to check in each evening by 10 then well thats the noisy part. When we asked some students were they were from they gladly told us a private school in Yorkshire then proceede to run in the bar and try to buy beer from a young barman. We liked this Hotel but we will check next time to enquire if any students will be there. We came home for a rest .

Room Tip: Ask for a room above 3rd floor

Very friendly hotel in an excellent position. close enough to have easy access to Bugibba but far enough to have a quiet resort with a quiet pool area. Half board well worth the money and the staff were very helpful and friendly.Shop around for best deals on trips , would recommend the Shamu boat trip from Bugibba harbour--- well worth the 20 euro , and the trip in Gozo for 5 euro well worth the money( particularly the trip in Dwerja- recommend the 3.50 Euro boat trip ). Very good trip . One point the trip to Comino -- it is a beautiful blue lagoon , but very busy and not a quiet place to be -- an hour is enough unless you want the 18-30 buzz crowd.

I was apprehensive before arriving as some of the TA reviews are so poor. IMO these are written by people who have an unrealistic expectations of what is an economically priced hotel. The hotel is almost 20 years old and yes, there are signs of tiredness - bathroom floor tiles loose, bath sealand, failed woodwork untidy but everything worked ok in our room. AC wasn't brilliant but certainly cooled us adequately. Fantastic views over St Paul's bay from our balcony but I heard of some people with a street view being unhappy with road noise & dust as road works were ongoing during our stay. Some on TA have mentioned unfriendly staff - we found the complete opposite with all bar one very friendly. Maryrose on reception is a total star -a very kind & knowledgeable lady always pleased to help & advise. Food is ok - not brilliant but ok. The salad starter was pretty good most evenings- the main course a bit stodgy sometimes - if anything the main portions were over generous & they'd have less food left if they allowed self service for main as well as the salad course. Bar drinks very reasonable compared to uk likewise coffee - NB take care though as a latte ordered by my wife received a triple expresso!!! Breakfast ok but not great. If you want a fry up you pay more but if you want one why come to Malta!? muesli was great and coffee fresh & replenished the moment you asked.. toasted bread fine - we avoided cold meats & cheese (at 8am no thanks?)

Pool is salt water so like swimming in the sea but never crowded & clean enough. Food from pool cafe not recommended. Baguette served there was not cheap & the bread was a couple of days old. We returned them. Hotel has its own separate restaurant which is quite nice & has dining rooms inside & out with views across the bay. very nice pastas & priced pretty reasonably. That said they tried to overcharge us & then weren't happy to give the 10% discount promised to hotel customers!

All in all we enjoyed our stay - the hotel is in the quieter part of St Pauls & we met many people who have returned there many times - one family were on their 12th visit! We were on a kayaking holiday & thought the hotel was a great base for our trips.

Boat trips look good as are open top buses. Visit blue lagoon on Camino Island by boat ( we went by kayak) its a simply beautiful place - never seen water so blue & clear. On Gozo we liked Xlendi ( Moby dick restaurant on sea front very very good)

We'd go again & would be happy to stay at Gillieru

We got this very late when we just wanted to find some sunshine away from the wet English early summer. Malta has the sunshine - 5 stars worth - but the hotel we were talked into accepting - the Gillieru - would struggle to get 1! Everywhere is grubby: the rooms are awful, dirty beds and sweat-stained pillows; the furniture in the public areas is ripped and stained, and the dining-room is disgusting! All the table cloths are stained (and clearly not changed in the week we were there); the menus are dog-eared and covered in bits of food and grease, and the dinner food is boiled or steamed slop and there are 3 shop-bought gateaux for desert!

The only redeeming feature is the view from the pool (or, if you are lucky from a sea-side room).

We should have gone room only, not HB, and we should have paid for a sea-view. That said, if that were offered to us now for free, we still would not go back.

After having grown up in Malta I had a fair idea of the hotels on the island and 4* and 5* hotels are usually fantastic. I have lived in the UK for a number of years now. We have just come back from a long weekend in Ta Cenc in Gozo (5*) for a wedding, a truly lovely hotel. On our way over we had a very late flight and decided to book into the Guilleru hotel for 1 night to rest up before catching the ferry to gozo the next day. I have never stayed there, but for a number of years have dined at the Gilleru fish restaurant which is lovely. As the Gillieru Harbour Hotel was rated 4* we assumed it would be a nice place to stop over. Well I could not have been more wrong!!!! If it hadn't been 3.30am and being totally exhausted from travelling we would have walked out the hotel that night and booked elsewhere! This is not a 4* hotel, more appropriately a 2* at its best!! The rooms were falling apart and stinking of sewage! The mattresses were dark brown and torn. The furniture was cheap pine that had not been changed for a decade. The bathroom (if you could call it that!)stank of wee and sealant had been topped up on the sink over the years to cover cracks! It was truly a foul hotel. We thought breakfast would hopefully make up for the room.........wrong!! There were 3 types of cereal, which looked like they had been there for a decade! A few slices of ham and luncheon meat, bread, jam and butter were your other option, if you wished to have any cooked food you had to pay extra! I went to poor some juice out of a jug and the plastic on the jug spout was clearly broken and spilt everywhere! How this was missed on filling it is beyond me. The tablecloth was covered in stains and the waiters looked like they had been dragged in to work. My brother who was staying there contacted me in the morning and was equally shocked. When he complained about the state of the hotel, he was told "that's just your opinion" - great customer service! If this hotel was rated a 2*,at least you know what to expect and the choice to stay there is yours. But rated as a 4* and costing 90 euros for 2 adults and a child per night it is truly shocking that guests are expected to pay this! At this price guests could find a 4* hotel in Malta at a much higher standard and get what they are paying for!
