“Excellent value in a three star hotel in Malta”
Reviewed May 7, 2010

We arrived mid afternoon on Sunday 25th April 2010 and thought the reception staff to be very well organised. The room was very clean, the twin beds were very clean and everything in the bathroom worked with plenty of hot water and a good shower though the room was on the small side especially for the disabled. Self service dinner on the first and all subsequent nights was great especially the home made soups. There were always four choices of meat/fish and the veg and potato choices were ver good too. There was salad plus various cold meats/fish and cheese in abundance for the vegetarians and lovely sweets/ice creams to finish. The waiter set up was very efficient with dirty dishes being cleared away almost instantly. Breakfast was always consistant of bacon or sausage, eggs, beans and tomatoes and if you fancied a change then there was a continental type. Bread and cakes were always available. What more can you ask.
A couple of anomalies were - tea/coffee making facilities are available for a cost of just over 3 Euro's per day (plus a returnable deposit of 20 Euro's) but considering you would pay 1.5 Euro's each per cup and you were given the makings for 8 cups of tea/coffee per day it was good value especially for the convenience of having a brew whenever you felt like it. There was a TV in each room but they only operated by using a control and these required a deposit (returnable) of 10 Euros, again very reasonable. Ironing facilities were also available but the cost was 2.5 Euro's each time you ironed anything - a bit expensive we thought. Altogether our stay was very good and I would recommend the hotel to anyone except perhaps during school holidays when it would become very noisy as nearly all rooms open onto an enclosed courtyard. Buses from the terminus at Bugibba - a few minutes away up a steepish hill, ran very frequently to all points on the island - some only via the capital Valetta.

We stayed here for five nights half-board booked on a package with Belleair Holidays. A family group of six with ages ranging from 25 to 68.
Check in was swift but there were no porters to help with luggage. We had sea view rooms thanks to reading previous reviews. Rooms were adequately furnished with twin beds, plenty of hanging and drawer space, table and chairs and further chairs on the balcony. There's a bit of traffic noise in the mornings and you will notice it if you leave the balcony doors open at night. The bathroom was a bit small and in need of some refurbishment but everything worked as it should and it was kept clean with fresh towels each day. The television works without a remote control but you can get one from reception. Reception were very helpful with booking excursions and bus times etc. They actually saved us quite a bit of money by offering alternatives to those suggested by our tour operator.
The restuarant was fine for breakfast although the coffee and tea was awful. A fair choice of hot and cold items were replenished regularly. The evening meal was typical of buffet service restaurants. The meat dishes were presented in sauces to make it easier to keep them warm. A fish and a pasta choice usually with some veg, salad or potatoes. There was a soup, desserts and cheese and biscuits. You won't starve but you may not feel spoiled either. It was canteen standard at best and school dinners at worst.
Our main gripes about the restaurant are the slow clearing of plates by some of the staff and the lack of table service for drinks. You have to order, pay and collect drinks from the bar outside the restaurant and take them in with you. The hotel would sell loads more if they offered them at the table. Generally the staff in the restaurant were polite but not particularly helpful.
The inside pool and jacuzzi are kept really warm. It's not a big pool and shallow but you can just about swim in it. The outdoor pools and bar area are okay. Plenty of sun beds and a bar for drinks and ice cream. The outside pool isn't heated.
Entertainment catered for the more mature guests that seem to be in the majority at this hotel. It wasn't to everyone's taste and definitely not aimed at families with children but plenty of folks were up dancing to the singers and we heard there was bingo. There was a country and western singer on our last night which please the many line dancers in the ballroom. As you can tell, the club 18-30 crowd would be a bit out of place here.
We did see some children staying at the hotel but there are few facilities for them. Mini golf and air hockey along with a childrens' pool is about all.
There's a Bistro Bar/Cafe at the front of the hotel. It isn't part of the all inclusive offered by the Qawra Palace but we found it to be very reasonable and much more pleasant than the hotel bars. The tea and coffee served here is good and the food too. If you don't fancy the desserts offered by the hotel then go to the Bistro where there are loads of choices for around £2 pp with coffee and spirits around the same.
Malta has a great history and the people are friendly. It's shabby in places but that's part of its character. We found that prices were generally much cheaper than other European destinations visited recently. Gozo is dearer but less commercialised. It's great to do a day trip there.
Our verdict on the Qawra Palace is that it's fine if you remember that it's a sea front hotel, with good pool facilities for very little money. It's clean and comfortable enough but not luxurious. We'd go there again if we returned to the area. The bus station was five minutes walk away and the sea front promenade takes you to St Pauls in fifteen minutes. Good location and good value sums it up.

This hotel should not be classed as a 4 star hotel. Although the evening meal was adequate, the breakfast was very poor. There was no information in the room - not even details of meal times, check out, etc. Entertainment was dire -unless you like bingo and horror video films. We had to pay £24 to have tea making facilities in the room.
On the upside - the staff were friendly and the bed was very comfortable.

Having been in the Qawra Palace Hotel 15 years ago we knew what to expect. Our beautiful ( supplement ) sea view room was superb. The room, staff, food and facilities were just superb. I have read several nasty comments about this hotel and they are all BULL$HIT as far as I am concerned. £800 for a week, two people, half board in a Seaview room direct from Scotland. I really wonder what complainers expect for their money? Maybe for £400 each the can get on Concorde and a month in the Waldforf Astoria. They would probablly still complain. Try this place, it's superb.
Booked with Thomas Cook and the reps were superb too.

My wife and I have just returned from two weeks in the Qawra Palace Hotel, Malta. We made the mistake of reading too much into the bad reviews on the net. Our experience was that we were treated very good by the excellent staff, the rooms were clean and serviced every day, Towels exchanged on a daily basis, bed linen every three days. The food was excellent with many different choices and plenty of it, entertainment was good and the pool facilities were also good. I don't see why some reviewers have to complain about this hotel - it's bloody marvellous! Some folk just like writing bad reviews or just like moaning to wind people up. so all of you, who like me, have read the reviews and become a little apprehensive, don't worry, you'll have a great time. One word of warning about the local buses, have the right money. it's either 54 cents or 1 euro 16 cents depending on where your going, the drivers do not like to give change and can be very surly if you insist on your change, ( I bet they make a fortune). They also drive very erratically in their ancient buses but it's an experience not to be missed! So go to Malta, stay at the Qawra Palace and ENJOY!

Poor hotel definitely not 4 star by any rating standard. First room we were allocated was a dormitory with 4 single beds. Whilst the hotel agreed to remove to remove 2 of them and make the other 2 into a double the standard of the rest of the room was such that we requested a transfer to a room with a sea view for an extra £14 a night. This was slightly better but still dated. Don't expect to have any tea or coffee making facilities or even a remote for the TV or key for the safety deposit box without paying extra. Also don't expect a seat in the cafe on a Saturday or Sunday night as the locals take over. Food is reasonable but the buffet style breakfast and dinner makes it feel a bit like being back at school and over strict adherence to their system of allocating you a section to sit in for the duration of your stay could see you left standing waiting for a table to be cleared while there are empty tables in other sections.

Good food. Clean rooms and hotel. Pleasant staff. Excellent location. Good indoor swimming pool.
What more could we have wanted?
Only that the charge of 23.50 Euros for use of the room safe is exorbitant and surely cannot be justified!
