“disappointing”
Reviewed March 15, 2010

Have just returned from a week at the Qawra Palace with my husband and father in law. We chose this hotel because we had stayed there a few years back and were very happy with it and thought it wasnt a bad location for my 85yr old father in law, being sea view and fairly close to bus stations/shops/
I think it was 8 years ago since we were there and nothing has changed at all that we can see. They were going round painting walls etc whilst we were there though.
The food although nicely cooked was bland and very repetitve and not much selection.Breakfast was fried eggs, bacon, tomatoes, beans or hard boiled eggs.the usual salad selection and fruit. On alternative mornings the change was sausages and scrambled eggs obviously cant cook bacon and sausages on the same morning. ON one occasion we had lunch in place of dinner and this was a very small selection indeed glad we werent on all inclusive! A lot of tables had reserved signs on them making less to go around and also at times tables werent re laid very quickly.
The rooms were very cold and also so was the ballroom i dont think there was an evening that people werent wearing jackets or woolies!
The entertainment was ok have seen worse and once the evening wore on it improved!
The standard of cleanliness was ok and bedding and towels were changed regularly.
I do feel the hotel is catering for mainly older people who go there for extended winter breaks and maybe dont eat either a lot or are not too fussed as long as they are away from home and just want the company etc.
Fair play and well done to the Thomas Cook (i think) re Bill who tried to arrange things like bingo and tea dances etc so there was a least something going on especially as the weather wasnt to be recommended.
Malta is a lovely place with friendly people and lots to do and the buses are to be recommended they are an experience in themselves, bumpy but fun.
We do not think we will return to the Qawra Palace again.

I have to say that i would not give it a 5* rating, more 3.5. Having said that i can not understand what some of these people are moaning about. There have been people saying that the accomodation was dirty, the food was not good, and staff were rude. I can honestly say that the bedding was changed every day and towels as well, the hotel was very clean and the staff could not do enough for you. We had a courtyard balcony which is not too bad at this time year, but i can agree this could be noisy later in the high season. The food was quite good really and there was always a fair choice. In our group there were one vegetarian and one vegan, all accomodated with no problems at all. If i have one problem it is that the in-door pool is a little on the small side but still clean and usable. As i say, the staff are very helpful and friendly. I could go on and on about the people who moan but i just don't know what they expect for what they pay. To finish, we flew out from Malta at 0800 which meant that we had to leave the hotel at 0600, and was there a breakfast for us?-----YES! And at that time of day we were the only ones eating. Oh, and yes we are going back, but hopefuly we won't run into a bunch of dummy spitters.

Went to the Qawra Palace after being recomended by Thompsons. Wish I had done a wee bit more investigating first. The hotel has most definatly seen better days. I think it would have looked very upmarked in the 1960's but is just a bit sad and very tired now. The room we had been given after us requesting a quiet one if possible was bog standard but okay. We looked over to the other hotel but not in an intrusive way.We did have a nice 'side' view of the sea and the balcony was nice enough. There had obviously been previous leeks in the air con system as the wall was stained. We too had a leek but to be fair when it was reported to reception they can and had a look and did something, not sure what but it was okay after! We did have problems the last 2 nights with really noisy Italian students which I know there has been other comments about. I don't have a problem with them as such but when they bang on your door after you tell them to kindly move on it's really annoying. I did complain to reception who did send up the securtiy person who had a word with them. My point is though that the walls are paper thin.

Food - well it was okay I thought, quite salty but lots of it. Bit worrying that some friends we made over there were hospitalised for 4 days after we left with acute food poisening and dysentery!! They are a lot older than us and it must have been very frightening for them.

Now on the plus side. Malta is absolutely beautiful. The buses are hilarious and lots of them and if you can go on everywhere, it's cheap and an experience!. There is a bus stop literally at the end of the road next to the hotel. Really interesting island and the history, wow!!! No beach as such but a pool area over the road. Sounds strange but you get to it from inside the hotel. The entertainment was not our cup of tea but again, real fun if you just take it for what it is. I think it was the Line Dancing Mecca to be honest but it is funny to watch. There was a fantastic singer called Renate..think that's how you spell it. Anyway he really was fab and if you get a chance you should make the effort.

The staff in the dining room we thought were charming. We had Anthony who looked after us and the snack bar has lovely staff too. Quite a nice area of dining outside which we loved going to in the late afternoon after being out all day and just enjoyed people watching.Oh by the way, when the entertainment goes off at about middnight the whole place is really quiet.

In a nutshell - no to the hotel but the people there were really nice. Yes to Malta, it's lovely

We booked our New Year's holiday well inadvance (April 09) to ensure a great room and good deal. With our booking we made initial requests for our party, including 2 sets of grandparents, ourselves and our 11 month old daughter to be located close to each other and near a lift. The hotel granted this wish but located our elderly family and young daughter on the 8th floor of the hotel. The 8th floor internal balconies being unsuitable and unsafe for both our 11 month old and her elderly grandparents. Our room was located beneath the HVAC equipment located on the roof. It was extremely noisy and the floor and walls vibrated. After just one sleepless night we asked for our room to be relocated. Initially the staff weren't very obliging. We were shown an alternative internal room which was also unsuitable because it was also noisy and stunk of smoke! Eventually, we decided to pay an upgrade for a seaview room. This room was great, no noise, no smells and a fabulous view of the bay. Sadly we had non alternative but to leave the grandparents on the 8th floor as we settled into our 4th floor room. Our recommendation is to enjoy a stay at the Qawara Palace is to book a seaview room, not just because of the fabulous seaview but the rooms are much quieter and more up to date than the internal rooms. You can hear the HVAC equipment in the inner court yard - if your ok with humming noises then you'll be ok. Ask for a lower level room if you have children/elderly people with your group. The food was really good and the staff were great too.........just the noise and the high level rooms spoilt it for us. Will we go back to Qawra Palace? No. Maybe back to Malta though.

Food average. Plates were too hot for selve service. Both of my sons burnt their hands on the first night (no warning signs were posted). They were more cautious thereafter. Watered down orange juice. No rreal butter - just some horible soft marg. I did think the red house wine in the caraef seemed a bit watered down too. Meals generally good and catered well for vegetarians and other dietry requirements.
Room clean (No unwanted insect visits as described in some reviews I've read). Bathroom small. Room cleaned and fresh towels every day. Beds poor. Too small. Thin sheets annoying as they don't stay in place. Cover sheet is used as duvet (Why no proper duvet?) You could also hear every movement when the other members of the family were moving due to the mattress material. I have to say they are the worst beds I have ever had at a hotel.
Thin walls - I was woken up by cleaners doinh their duties in other rooms at 8:30 in the morning.
Pool area pleaseant and washed down every night.
Drinks at the pool: Why they don't just have one queue at the pool for both full and paying guests when only one person serving is baffling. They have created a rod for their own back by treating half and full borad differently (Creates a bit of 'us and them' between guests too).
Hotel staff - some very friendly, others had a bit of an attitude and not willing to help.
Inner courtyard was dark and dingy with no sunshine entering during the day.
No room service.
No kettle unless you wanted to pay for it (3 to 4 euro per day)
No sea view for family size rooms (Or so we were told).
Cafe at the front of the hotel is very pleasant.
Indoor pool appeared to be clean.
Genrally the place had more of a holiday camp feel to it rather than a hotel. Would rate at 2 to 3 star.
Generally dissapointed with Malta ... OK if you like visitting churches. Roads very poor and signage poor. St Pauls Bay is a mess. Gozo much nicer (Less built up and more scenic).
Good job the weather was good.
