“EXCELLENT HOTEL”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

My wfe and I stayed at the Dolmen for 3 weeks in February/March. We asked for a room on a higher floor and got a room on the 6th floor which had tea and coffee facilities and free in room safe. This very large (2 bedroomed )room had been modernised and had wonderful views over St Pauls Bay.Very clean with very comfortable beds. All areas spotlessly clean. The food in the restaurant was very good with excellent choice. We were made welcome at all times by very friendly and efficient staff. We would definately stay there again.

Room Tip: higher floors have better views

I've been wanting to stay at the Dolmen hotel for quite a long time and finally we went last weekend. When we arrived, we noticed that they had a large outside parking area, it costs only 3euro and you can leave your car for the whole weekend, so that was very convenient for us.

We booked a sea view room, so we were really looking forward to it, however we were given a standard room facing the garden, when we complained they realized that it was a problem from there side, and since there wasn't another room available they informed us that they were giving us the price of the standard room, which was an an obvious thing to do. Anyway. The central heating was a bit high, so we had to leave the gallery door open all the time. The room was big, comfortable and, it had an oldish style, and it's not like the pictures they show you on the website but we liked it. We really liked the shower, hot water was available all the time.

The food was good, especially the breakfast, it had a wide range of choice, so we found everything we wanted to have. When the items finished, they were being replaced immediately. Even the dinner was good, however certain items weren't kept very warm, but I can't say that we didn't enjoy eating.

Regarding the entertainment, there was a country night, but we didn't attend as it is not our type. Football lovers can enjoy a big screen in the bar area. Also, there is a casino.

The check out is at 12pm, so you have plenty of time to go for breakfast and go back to your room and relax.Be careful to check your bill when paying it as we were charged the full amount of the mini bar, with out being asked if we used it, which actually we didn't. They changed the bill immediately with no problems.

We enjoyed our stay, however since certain things weren't as expected i don't think we will be back again.

Room Tip: I've heard that sea view rooms are better, so be careful to check them and confirm they are avai...

stayed at the Dolmen last week , food was good quality and great choice as we took the half board option and we had a room with a great view and balcony .
Was great to sit at the cafe over looking the pools and the sea in the good weather .
It was mega full for being off season and I think the meal times were over subscribed with the shear volume of people going through.
my only gripe was no free wifi as was advertised on the Dolmen website and was why I booked it , we were on a business / part holiday so we had to search cafes and hot spots for wifi to catch up on work .which really wasnt ideal

Room Tip: choose a room with a sea view

We stayed at the Dolmen for 10 days as part of a package. The hotel was recommended to us by friends.
Overall, we were very happy with the hotel. We had a very spacious seaview room, which is well worth asking for or paying for. The seaview rooms face south over the gardens towards the sea. They are not only quieter and brighter than the standard rooms, they're also, in most cases, considerably larger. The furnishings were smart and modern, and the beds comfortable, with soft white duvets. Bathroom had a good-sized bath with shower over it, and nice fluffy towels changed as required. Water always piping hot. There was a TV but the only English-language channel was Sky News.
The corridors are carpeted, which keeps the noise down, and our room was very quiet.
We were half-board. The breakfast buffets were fine, except for the dreadful coffee. Dinner offered a good choice of salad starters, soup, several meat or fish mains courses, potatoes prepared quite imaginatively in a different way each day, one or two vegetable dishes, and also a pasta and/or risotto option. Sweets were mostly rather samey creamy flans, but do try the coconut tart or hazelnut tart when they appear. Other options are available if you ask - we saw guests who'd made special requests having vegetarian meals, pizza and icecream. Oh, and even porridge at breakfast. The most affordable wine at dinner is a half-carafe of house wine at 5.25 euros. Some themed evenings were attempted - the Maltese nights were good, but the American meal was a bit of a mistake.
The other facilities of the hotel were not of much interest to us as it was too cold for pools (the indoor pool is very small). We did look at the hotel "beach" which is just flat rocks and concrete with access to the sea.
Hotel staff seemed a bit cool and impersonal, but efficient enough. We resented the charge of 3.50 euros an hour for access to the WiFi - the same as the cost of using the hotel's fixed computers. If this hotel is trying to encourage the business/conference trade, free WiFi should be available. A cafe just across the road offers free and fast Wifi for 2 euros an hour.
Bugibba/St Pauls Bay is just not for us, but many people seem to like it. We found it messy and charmless, with no pleasant areas for a stroll. That may improve when the new seafront development is finished. For us, the best thing about the location was being next to the bus station for an easy escape to other areas.

Room Tip: It is well worth paying for (or blagging) an upgrade to a seaview room. They are brighter, quieter a...

enjoyed a very nice 5 day break at the Dolmen - half board . We normally stay in a time share suite at this hotel - so the room without a view was a first for me. The room was very nice, clean, tidy and well laid out. A well stocked bar fridge was a very nice suprise. Beds were very comfortable and the daily cleaing etc: was of a very high quality.
The room did not have pool/sea view but it did not detract in any way from the wonderful stay I enjoyed. Breakfast was extremely good - as was the evening meal - great food choice for all palates.
Entertainment at night was not that exciting but there are plenty of local venues to discover.
Would recommend this hotel to any visitor to Malta as it is in a good central location for transpport

Room Tip: sea or pool room view perhaps

Priced for seniors hence nothing fancy. You are within walking distance of good resturants. Rooms okay but dated and need updating. Food is trageted towards senior IE bland. Food is okay but after a few days cabin fever sets in.

Room Tip: Sea view or nothing.

We stayed at The Dolmen at the end of a two-week tour travelling over land and sea from the UK to Malta via France, Spain and Italy. This was the largest hotel but the first thing that struck me when we arrived was the musty smell. I'm not sure what caused it but it smelled damp.

Our room was on the ground floor and had a massive balcony. It overlooked the main pool. We were slightly off season so there was plenty of space around the pool most afternoons, which was great. The room was large, comfortable and very clean.

We booked in for a massage at the spa, and that was pleasant. We found all the staff generally helpful and friendly. The food was also very good.

The things that concerned us were the strange mouldy smell and when we arrived and asked to have our bags stored until our room was ready, they were "stored" in reception. Not very secure. There were lots of dead cockroaches around by the beach bar and pool.

Generally I think our holiday was tarnished by a couple of unfortunate incidents in Valletta that really put us off Malta completely.

Room Tip: Go for a sea view.
