Ok, so the food from the main restaurant wasn't 5 stars, the view from our room could have been better and the card for our room didn't always work first time... But those small things aside and I'm really struggling to come up with a negative about this hotel!

I'm 20, and it's my first couples holiday with my girlfriend of 2 years and we had a brilliant time. The entire complex was exceptionally clean, the staff were friendly and helpful, the hotel was located in a lovely area, the bay was beautiful, the weather was perfect, the drinks were realtively cheap and there was always something to do. I could go on, but I don't think I need to. For the £500 or so I spent, the Dolmen Resort was a bargain and whilst I wouldn't go back (I like to travel to new places on every holiday) I would certainly recomend it to anyone. As it happens my brother is going with his girlfriend in September courtesy of said recomendation. Any bad reviews of this place will undoubtedly be the result of somebody LOOKING for something wrong. Case closed.

Room Tip: the rooms that end in an odd number are the ones with the pool and beachside view ;-)

The Dolmen experience was not quite what we expected looking at the hotel's site and the descriptions in tour operators' brochures/catalogues and reading the hotel reviews. The "resort" has no character; it is a rather old hotel that is being renovated to be a 4stars hotel. The part that is refurbished could be rather pleasant to stay at. The long corridors are still to be done, even in that part, as they look old-fashioned, dark and dirty. Be aware that the hotel can still allocate the rooms of the old part to guests! If you are unlucky and find yourself there, your holiday dream is quickly vanished. The hotel management is very helpful and they will eventually have you change rooms but you may have lost already one or two of your precious holidays!

We were travelling via a big tour operator and we had no option but the half board one. So, we found ourselves eating in a canteen-like restaurant, the Menhir Restaurant. It is supposed to have magnificent views of the Mediterranean and the promenade which is true if you manage to sit close to the windows. Otherwise, you are in beautiful Malta, eating an average canteen quality dinner in a closed environment. Not the best choice. On the positive side, at breakfast, they had delicious cheese pies, a Maltese specialty. Try them with honey.

Looking for a better location to dine in the open air, we tried the Batubulan restaurant to enjoy its privileged location at the water's edge. Upgrading meant deducting 5€ per person from the bill. We were not enchanted by the food. A very good bottle of wine and the smiling face of a waitress just saved the evening. We gave up and returned to eat at the Menhir Restaurant.

Café Delos offered fantastic views over the St. Paul's Bay and served good espresso but the food was also nothing special.

There was evening entertainment at the bar/pool area that could be heard and seen from the room. Another, less central, area could be more appropriate to allow hotel guests that don't usually appreciate that sort of holiday to enjoy in peace a glass of wine in their balcony.

If you plan to go swimming, be aware that the sea is accessed by ladders since the bay is a rocky one. There is a small sandy spot further down but it becomes quite busy. This leaves you with the choice of the hotel pools really, especially for those with children.

We did not rent a car, coming from the continent we are used to driving on the right, but we travelled a lot by bus. The bus terminal is just around the corner but the recent change to Arriva was not yet fully functional creating long queues outside and inside the bus! The one and only automatic machine at the terminal was not enough and the bus driver was issuing the tickets as well as providing information on available options, route schedules, fees, etc. The trip to Valetta was easily one hour long! If you look for a base to explore further these wonderful islands and you do not have a car at your disposal, this hotel is not ideal. Organised excursions are a good option but you will get far more options while staying at Sliema.

Room Tip: definitely a renovated room with sea view on the 5th, or even better, the 6th floor.

We have just returned from another 3 week holiday and once again we were made so welcome, all the staff at the Dolmen are always smiling and ready to help we cannot thank you all enough for helping to make our holiday so enjoyable. We were at the Dolmen for 3 weeks at Christmas 2010 and had our favourite room 501 so it was like coming home again to be in the same room many thanks for that. Once again the menu was good in the Menhir Restaurant where the Staff so kind especially as the Hotel was very busy. The pool area cleaned daily and the rooms always cleaned well. We cannot Praise this Hotel enough so a stay in it will prove me right. Patsy and Vince 6th July to 27th July 2011.

Room Tip: Well worth paying for a seaview room there are some wonderful views.

The hotel itself was large and had spacious rooms. We had a ground floor room with 'balcony' area looking towards the sea but with just a garden view. There were three of us, my husband, me and our teenage daughter. We all had plenty of room. We had two large siingles pushed together to make a very wide bed and our daughter, who is 5ft 10 ins also had a bed that was big enough for her even though it was a smaller one than ours. The room had good air conditioning and reasonable sound proofing, which we needed to get rid of the entertainment from the bar/pool area. I don't know what the entertainment was like as we don't usually enjoy that sort of holiday camp thing and we were too shattered each night to be bothered to find out different. It did seem popular wih others so it was probably good.
Our room was cleaned each day but often befor e 9am! This meant that we felt presure to get up and out early which we shouldn't have to on holiday. I suppose we could've put a do not disturb on the door but then would the room be cleaned later? We didn't get to the pool once in the whole week in time to grab a sun bed. There are nothing like enough of them, so we opted to swim in the pool late afternoon after returning from our day out and then only by chucking our towel in a corner and walking back to the room wet (nipped over the 'balcony' to get back in).
Local swimming is mostly from rocks or where the sea is accessed by ladders. Some sandy spots once you are 'in'. There is a small sandy spot down by the square where you can hire a sunbed and lounger from a bar just steps from the sea. That leaves you with v convenient access to food and drink too.
No local restaurants that are really worth a mention. You will be okay if you want burgers, pizza, fish & chips or Sunday Roast. I would've killed for a proper decent fish restaurant! The sea was full of fish equiring my attention!
Beware that car parking and even room safe's are charged as extra. We had half board and had to pay even for drinks with the meals. Not extortionate prices but a simple drink (water even?) with a meal should in my mind be included.
The buffet meal were okay, but not always that hot and got v boring by the end of the week. Not much imagination was put into them. As others have said I recommend the early sitting as it is much quieter. I would call it good canteen food, no better than that. The beef was consistently so over cooked it was like leather but apart from that it was all edible. The best part was the the delicious crusty bread.
The resort has no character at all but can be used as a base to explore further, which is what we did. Nowhere on Malta is that far away due to the relatively small size of the island. Drive carefully though as the roads are heavily potholed, signalling seems to be banned and speed is king. Lots of free parking or optional donations in some tourist spots such as outside Mdina and the blue Grotto. We could learn from this back home.
We were recommended by reception to use the Yellow Fun speed boat trip to Comino for a day's swimming at the Blue Lagoon. It is a fast and cheap way to get there. There is a 'but' coming now.. the driver of the speed boat drove like a lunatic and while it was exhilarating, beware if you have a bad back or the like as you will be bounced of every wave there and back. A little more worrying was the absence of life jackets (we even had them provided for the fishing boat trip to the Blue Gotto - lovely) and the safety bar infront of us was broken.
Must mention the staff who were friendly and helpful without exception. Also our Thomas Cook Rep Michaela, who bent over backwards to help us get a refund for a trip that our daughter wasn't well enough to take (nothing holiday related).
If you get the chance to visit a village festa please do so as they are great. Lots of noise, traditions and fireworks.
PS. Churchill's restaurant at Xlendi on Gozo, was lovely, for a lunch under a sun shade right in the quayside and even provided us with stale bread to feed the fish alongside us.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that overlooks the gardens or has a sea view. Rooms at the front of the hotel would...

Had an 8 night stay at this hotel last month. Never been to Malta before and we found it to be just right for this amount of time. The standard of accommodation was excellent. We did however have a refurbished room which I must say was one of the best we have ever stayed in. The only fault was the air conditioning which could have been a little cooler (in fact in all areas of the hotel considering the heat) and the fact that outside the window was the heating plant. We were able to see the sea beyond this! I would say it is an extremely well positioned hotel with steps into the sea or a choice of pools if you prefer. We found the food good with plenty of choice with just the desserts a little poor. Lots of very sweet desserts and even the fruit salad had a lack of fresh fruits as it had tinned fruit added. Not good if you are diabetic as is my husband. Entertainment seemed a little poor so we didn't bother. Most nights we would walk up to the square just 5 mins away where there are many bars and restaurants. The bus garage is also really close but they need to get things sorted out as many people are complaining since the buses changed to Aviva just 4 weeks ago! Julia

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room although these may be the ones without balconies.
