La Piccola Calabria

Good for: Dining on a budget
Dining options: Dinner, Reservations, Serves Alcohol
Description: I visited La Piccola Calabria for Sunday lunch. The restaurant is quite small and hence booking in advance is advisable. The owners are a Italo / Maltese couple whereby the wife cooks and the husband is the waiter. The Menu is in italian however it contains photos of the various plates. Furthermore, the menu is enhanced by a number of different specials available on different days. As a starter / antipasto we opted for the seafood which comprised 6 different plates including Mussels and Clams in white wine broth, prawns in a cream sauce and calamari in a lemon reduction. A mousaka accompanied with smoked cheese and salami was also delivered to our table compliments of the chef. All this was excellent. As a main we had two different types of pasta, one was with a porcini and tartufo sauce whilst the other was a clam sauce. Both were excellent. All this was accompanied by a bottle of wine, water and coffees. The total bill was 140 Euros for 4 people. When presenting the bill the waiter also brought a bottle of house liqour (which tasted very similiar to Passito) on the house. Excellent Restaurant.

“Taste of Calabria in Malta - If you are anywhere around Xemxija you must definitely visit”
Reviewed April 9, 2011

The place is itself a small trattoria type of place. The food is however a fest for your taste buds an or**sm I would dare say. I have visited this place numerous times and I have always been more than satisfied. My last visit to the place was on the 9 April 2008. Giovanni (the patron) was as welcoming as always! He asked us to sit down and gave us a welcoming drink. We ordered an antipasto and two plates of paste. What we got for antipasto was well beyond anything we expected! Giovanni served us generous portions of crude and lemon marinated octopus and red local prawns (they were just heavenly) then a potato and green pepper stew, borlotti beans cooked in anduja and parmesan (you should really try this), chick peas cooked in honey, spicy black calbrese olives and cherry tomatoes cooked in honey (just divine), funghi porcini trifolati (the real stuff not button mushrooms), peppers and aubergines grilled to perfection, potato gateau, a sword fish carpaccio (which was out of this world), a caprese with real Casertan bufala mozzarella, and bufala ricotta... all antipastos were just great... Then we got are mains 2 ginormous plates one with linguine and crab and the other with local prawns, langoustines, clams and mussels. The crab was delicately delicious and the pasta cooked perfectly al dente (true to the Italian tradition). We also had 2 jugs of sparkling water, a glass of wine each, 2 shots of grappa, 1 shot of amaretto and 2 Italian style espresso ristretto.... You would never guess how much we were charged for this culinary feast! 79 euro for 2 people! This place is way better than most other pretentious places ... The gourmands and the lovers of Italian cuisine should definitely visit this place.

“Very Bad Experience - total rip off”
Reviewed April 3, 2011

The first visit to this restaurant and surely never i shall dine again at this place. The italian waiter which greets you with a smile (probably already knows that he is going to rip you off) will ask you the leave your dinner selection in his hands and promise you that he will provide you with the italian experience. We started of with what he called antipasto which only consisted of 1 grilled green pepper, aubergine, black olives, omelette and mushrooms. We were 7 people dining and all we got was just i slice of each item from this so called antipasto. The price for this was 50 euros. As for main we decided to go for two different plates of pasta (since the fresh fish on display was not fresh at all), one marinara and the other with pomodoro and cream. Once again the portions were very disappointing, mainly serves four when we were seven people. The price for these two pasta dishes was 148 euros. We were also charge 14 euros for a bottle of wine which cost 2.50 retail, also for four jugs of water we were charged 15 euros.
Very disappointed with this experience and i strongly do not recommend this place to anyone.

“A taste of Italy”
Reviewed June 22, 2010

I have been twice to this Restaurant. It is a very small and cosy restaurant with around 10 tables in all so ideally one books beforehand. There is no actual menu, however the Italian waiter (he can speak Maltese, English and italian) rolls off the different plates which are available on the day. On both occasions we had the mixed seafood starter which comes in a clay pot with the broth still steaming. The taste of mussels, clams and prawns is unforgettable. There is also a meat starter with typical Calabrian products which i have yet to taste. On both occasions we had pasta as a main course with two large dishes being put in the middle so that we can taste them both. The first time we had spaghetti with clams and spaghetti with porcini mushrooms and tartufo nero - extremely good. The second time we had penne with ricotta, red sauce and spicy sausage and tagliatelle with prawns. Again extremely good. The coffee is quite good although I have had better whilst at the end of the meal a bottle of home made liquor (either sweet wine or limocello) is brought to the table and one can have as much as he or she likes. This is definitley one of the hidden gems in Malta.
