Bed & Breakfast San Marco

We couldn't have been luckier than to find the San Marco Bed & Breakfast in Montefalco, Umbria. The B&B is located in a rural area, near the medieval hilltown of Montefalco, and is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. We stayed in a beautiful little cottage with all the amenities. Our hosts, Carla and Philipe, and their wonderful son Niccola, were helpful and very friendly. They even invited us to dinner in their home the night we arrived. It was the perfect staging area for days trips to places of interest in Umbria and Tuscany. This was, by far, our favorite place in Italy and we would go back in a minute.

B&B San Marco is located in the heart of Umbria's wine and olive oil production area. Vineyards and olive groves abound, making this area a very scenic countryside. B&B San Marco can also be used as a travelling hub as it is less than one hour's drive to Perugia and Assisi, and less than two hours to Siena. Each of these three towns represent very enjoyable day trips. However, the best aspect of B&B San Marco is the warmth and friendliness of its host, Carla, and her son, Nicola. (Carla's pet pooch, Mowgli, is also a very friendly and very well-mannered host.) Carla's breakfasts were excellent Italian breakfasts consisting of crustata, yogurt, Italian cheeses, copacola, Italian bread, juice, and delicious coffee. You won't be disappointed.

After tow nights in overcrowded Florence, we spent two nights in B&B San Marco. It was so nice to find ourselves in this splendid countryside of vines and olives! very restful. My first idea was to find some wine and olive oil to bring back home as I always like to buy some foodstuff as souvenir. Carla and Philippe were of very good advice.
A nice bedroom, a delicious breakfast and a warm welcome, but also small towns with their churches, ‘piazza’ and markets to discover, and Assisi to visit and revisit… We should have planned to stay longer.

I've never written a Trip Advisor review before but simply must spread the word about this wonderful B&B. The owner is delightful--kind and helpful but not overbearing, as I found some B&B owners in Italy to be. She serves a scrumptious breakfast of fruits, breads, meats, cheeses, etc. She speaks a bit of English but her teenage son speaks more; he was gracious enough to translate when necessary.

Rooms are large and tastefully decorated and there's even a living room for the three bedrooms to share. The rooms are in the upstairs of the owner's farmhouse, accessible through a separate entrance so you have complete privacy if you want it.

You're only a few minutes from the delightful small medieval towns of Bevagna and Montefalco, and it's easy to make a day trip to Assissi, Perugia, etc. The owner will recommend nearby restaurants for dinner. Listen to her. They're great!

Getting to this place for the first time would be a challenge even by car. But once I had that bit figured out, I found myself a home surrounded by Sagrantino vines and olive trees. The large, cozy guestrooms were all in the farmhouse attached to the main house and they shared one gigantic common area. Most importantly of all, the service there was impeccable. I arrived there without a car -- a mistake, as BB San Marco could only be reached by car. The host, Carla, however, was quick to make sure I did not feel stranded. She drove me to Montefalco and let her son be my tour guide of the quiant medieval town. Then she made a truly Umbrian dinner, invited an English-speaking friend (Carla spoke little English and I spoke almost no Italian) and me to have dinner with the family. The next morning, she drove me to town to rent a car. Without her, I would be stranded in the middle of Italy; in her, I found a friend in the green heart of Italy.
