Owner description: Scacciadiavoli is one of the oldest winery in the area of Montefalco. The name Scacciadiavoli can be traced back to an episode of exorcism of the seventeenth century, reported by Johannes de Rupescissa in the Treaty on the Quintessence. The story tells about a young woman possessed by the devil, to which an exorcist give her drink the local red wine, succeeding in drive out the devil. The event gave its name to the village, still exists, appropriately called Scacciadiavoli. In the mid-nineteenth century, Prince Ugo Boncompagni Ludovisi built the winery, which is still functional and rational; From that moment, given the monumental size of the building, the site is called Localita Cantinone (large cellar). In the middle of the twentieth century, the grandfather of the current owners, Amilcare Pambuffetti, acquired ownership of the company, which covers an area of one hundred and thirty acres, of which twenty vineyards. The productions are typical of the area: Sagrantino (15 hectares), Red (12 hectares) and Grechetto (3 hectares), Montefalco Bianco (1 hectare) and Chardonnay (1 hectare).

“Beautiful family-run winery”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2012

My husband and I stopped by this cantina unannounced a few days ago and were welcomed for a wine tasting although it is a busy time of year. The grounds are gorgeous and we would love to return for a tour. The wines are very good - including the unique Brut, and we bought several bottles. I would highly recommend reserving a time in advance.

“Geat wines, great people, great experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2012

If you are looking to visit a winery in Montefalco (Umbria) and taste the mighty Sagrantino DOCG cantina Scacciadiavoli is a must. It is a beautiful winery with an very interesting 150 year history and absolutely marvelous wines. The owners are extremely hospitable and were available to take us on a tour of the winery and give us a guided tasting of all the wines they produce including their very unique sparkling wines. A+++

“Wonderful disccovery of Sagrantino”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2012

Made an appointment to visit the winery including tasting of five wines and diner.
The diner was antipasti followed by local soup and a desert.
The five wines were: Sagrantino sparkling rosé (traditional method), Grechetto, Rosso di Montefalco, Sagrantino (dry) red, Sagrantino (passito, sweet) red.
All wines were delicious but I seduced by the sparkling rosé and the Sagrantino (dry) red.
The visit of the winery was also interesting including a view on the wine fields behind the winery.
If you have two hours time (around noon) and you are a wine fan, I would highly recommended this activity.

“Scacciadiavoli Cantina”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2012

We were at the Cantine Aperte in May this year and we had a most memorable time at Scacciadiavoli - the sparkling Rose was awesome, the day was perfect. What a wonderful family business. Will surely return.

“a family dream”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2012

This is a incredible family run winery. We have visited it at least twice now, the last time during "Catine Aperte" when all the wineries open their doors to the public. It was such a wonderful occasion both times. The first time we took a tour with the lovely daughter who has studied wine in France. We tried the incredible sagrantino and then the spumante "metodo classico" the second time at Cantine Aperta we danced to a jazzy band and had free wine. What a party!
