Castellare di Tonda Resort & Spa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 5, 2013

We stayed at Castellare di Tonda in September 2012 to review the property for some North American equestrian publications. I, for one, was delighted with the experience! It is my mission to spread the word about this wonderful place. I heartily suggest you plan a stay here for the upcoming vacation & holiday season.

Castellare di Tonda earns 5 stars on its own merit, in a rustic way. The key to enjoying a stay here is to understand what the experience entails – and what it does not. This is rural Tuscany with farms and vineyards. Castellare di Tonda itself is part farm, part ranch. The accomodations are comfortable though small and rustic, just like a farmhouse (imagine that)!

Guests may dine at the central complex where there are a variety of options. There is a café/bar/general store that is open most of the day. You can buy supplies for your apartment, order some paninis for lunch, have gelato and espresso drinks, and order formaggio, salumi, and wine for a late afternoon snack.

The restaurant is open in the evenings and typically provides buffet-style dining with food arranged by Italian multi-course standards. Wine is to order. Digestifs with dessert. The breakfast area is upstairs.

There is a large variety of activities at Castellare di Tonda. It is difficult to mention them all. Indeed, the website in its current configuration (February 2013) may give the impression that the Wellness Spa is a primary feature. Although the spa is lovely it is not, in my opinion, a major reason to visit. Travelers seeking only a 5-star Wellness Spa & Resort experience may be disappointed. However, the spa is a fantastic way relax after a long trail ride or other activities!

Trail riding here is amazing. The owner is a former reining champion and he breeds Quarter horses. Also, some beautiful Fjords. The wranglers are multilingual and can provide instruction or accompany you on trail rides on the vast, hilly, forested Tuscan countryside. I'm no horse expert, but I know a good operation when I see it!

The popular Tuscan hill towns of Volterra and San Gimignano are nearby: a 10-15 minute drive. Castelfiorentino (also nearby) has the nearest train station for going farther afield to Florence, Lucca, Pisa.

Anyway, long review. Thanks for sticking with me. Can you tell I'm enthusiastic about this place?

The "wellness & gourmet" package is a rip off!! Don't take it!! Just book and reserve everything separably. The package is very misleading. Dinner was terrible - simply don't go there. Nothing is "gourmet" in this package...

Why will we go back there? It is an amazing location. Tuscany at its best. Green all around. It is quiet. The apartments are big and clean. The view from the apartments is amazing. The price if you book it with no package is cheap. Breakfast was the best we had in Italy.

Again, the bottom line is that we will go back their, bringing friends and family. Recommended.

Room Tip: It is better not to take the apartments by the main road next to the reception. Take one of the more...

We really enjoyed our week at Castellare Di Tonda! The place is not 5 stars but if you are lucky and end up in a good "casolare" like ours (Mezzacosta) you really can enjoy all the beauty and peace of Tuscan countryside! A very international (European) environment and a super friendly personnel especially at the restaurant have helped to make our holiday a memorable one. To mention also the vicinity to many beautiful towns like San Gimignano.

Room Tip: Choose an isolated casolare like Mezzacosta; excellent for families with children

Me and my wife were there with a Regal box.
The landscapes are great, and so the external of the houses. Personnel is kind, especially at the restaurant. Spa is normal (wellness absolutely medium level, restrooms little), but I had a good massage.
What really disappointed me was the house: furniture is old, the rooms are little, and cleanliness is poor. From the outside the houses look lovely, but the inside is really very old.
At the end it would be a nice place to stay during the day, quite disappointing to sleep and stay for more than one day.

Staff is nice and professional. Appartments however are very noisy - you can hear your neighbours using their toilet and if you are not lucky they keep you up al night. Swimmming pools are small for so many people. Not enough value for money.

We just returned from Castellare Di Tonda and absolutely loved it! Although it wasn't exactly what we expected when we checked it we loved our week there. The accommodations were clean and casual and the resort was perfect for our family of 5 and a great base from which to explore Tuscany. The children enjoyed the pools and meeting many children from many different countries. Overall a fantastic experience!

We stayed for one week in mid June at the San Nicola house We found the accommodation ideal, and the children's pool fabulous for my four year old granddaughter. The restaurant was excellent, and the services such as the tractor ride and horse riding make this an ideal holiday location for families or active travelers. Lovely area, though best to have a car to get around. Views are wonderful, and the farms wine is very good!
