The castle is steeped in history and the Von Trapp family still reside there. You see the castle as you drive into the town. Walk up as the views are worth it although there is a car park close to the castle. Closes at 12pm, reopens at 14.00hrs.

This is a great castle to visit. The family Trapp still lives here, and it's very well kept. Almost everything inside is original, and it provides an insider view of the life from the 1100 to the 1800. Our guide, Mr. Gunther, was great and made the visit interesting but real and never boring. It may be a little hard on people with reduced mobility, due to the many stairs, but it is really worth visiting.

The castle itself is very beautiful. To visit the castle, you take a tour which lasts about an hour. We bought a family pass, so the price was not expensive. the tour takes you through several rooms of the castle, although there is also a large portion that is not open to the public as it's still inhabited. The castle has a first rate arms collection and many of the pieces were those worn by former owners of the castle or soldiers employed by them. Unfortunately, they don't allow pictures of the weapons.

The staff showing the castle were very friendly and knowledgeable. We asked several questions about the castle and artifacts. It was very interesting.

If you like hiking, there are several hiking trails around the castle.

We have visited quite a few castles in Alto Adige and so far have not been disappoint. Castel Coira would have to be one of the jewels in the crown. We had a guide who took her time and explained each item of interest with great enthusiasm. It was evident that she enjoyed what she did and we weren't regarded as just another tour group.
The castle itself is well looked after, privately owned, and offer beautiful views over the valley and mountains. Features of the castle include a cloister where one can view an original painted family tree of the families that have owned the castle over the centuries, and an old rare organ that was built in the 1500s and is still functional today. Absolutely beautiful.
The armoury collection is also a big plus and the guide allowed the children to touch and wear certain pieces or armoury. This proved very popular!
