Terre Di Himera
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 3, 2012

From the first bite of Maria's lemon ricotta cake on our arrival, until our final breakfast feast, our stay at Terre di Himera was a culinary kaleidoscope of Sicily's finest food. Most notable were the delicious dinners which were spread out over at least half a dozen dishes. After each course we would imagine ourselves to be full...only to be amazed by another wonderful tasting concoction, each accompanied by Maria's explanation of the origins and cooking techniques of its fresh local ingredients.

Maria and Fabrizio's refined taste is not confined to the kitchen - re-built from its modest beginings as a crumbling police station, their country house is the perfect combination of rustic charm with modern amenities in an idyllic hilltop setting. We hope one day to return!

My wife, 24 y.o. daughter, and I had the pleasure of spending 3 nights here in May, 2012, during our first trip to Sicily. The experience was simply extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like family by Maria and Fabrizio. They are a friendly, helpful, and happy couple, both natives of the PLaeermo region, and embody the spirit of the Sicilian people. Their pride in their home and culture was evident throughout our stay. Their sense of humor made us feel relaxed and welcome.

The B&B is actually a restored and re-purposed police station, although one would never imagine this by looking at it. Fabrizio and Maria spent several years rebuilding and restoring the structure after purchasing it about five years ago. The guest rooms are large, well appointed, immaculately clean, and evoke a rustic charm. It is obvious that great care and expense was put into the restoration. The furnishings are a combination of older restored pieces and newer rustic style furniture, much of it hand made by Sicilian artisans. There is excellent WiFi in the rooms and throughout the property.

The food is astounding. Breakfast inside or out on the covered patio is an abundance of fresh local fruit, preserves, baked goods, and so forth. Before we arrived, I contacted Maria to indicate that we would like to have dinner the evening we arrived, as we were driving from southeast Sicily, and wished to have our dinner plans already in place. After that dinner, my family agreed that there could not possibly be a better alternative for dinner, and we reserved the next two nights as well. Maria does the cooking, and it is authentic Sicilian cuisine using fresh local ingredients, many coming from their own farm. Antipasto, pasta, meat, salad - everything is wonderful, and the dinner is an outstanding value. Olive oil from their own olive trees is used for the cooking, and also served with the meals. Believe me, you will not go hungry, that's for sure. A selection of Sicilian wines is available at an additional cost, but very reasonable priced. These were the best meals we had during our ten days in Sicily, and that is saying something, as we found the food throughout Sicily to be excellent.

An additional treat two of the three nights was the attendance of Antonio Cappadonia, a highly regarded gelatiere from nearby Cerda, who arrived with gelato for dessert. He is recognized throughout Italy as one of the most inventive and creative gelatieri in the entire country. His gelato is amazing. A short side trip to his shop is well worth the effort and the time.

Although for some travelers the rural, somewhat out of the way location of Terre di Himera may not be suitable, we found the location to be exactly what we were looking for. It is an idyllic spot among the olive trees and overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast. Although it may appear to be a little difficult to find, Maria can provide you with very accurate directions, and we did not have a problem. An added benefit, especially for those with an interest in history and archaeology, is that the property is located within the historical site of Himera, a Greek city founded about 600 BC. There is an excellent museum 2 km away at the bottom of the road, and self guided tours of excavated remains of the city and the Temple of Victory are well worth the time for a very nominal cost.

Day trips to Cefalu, Palermo, Termini Immerese, and other towns and cities nearby are very convenient. Even cities out of the immediate region such as Caltigirone are within fairly easy reach.

This year is their first full season operating the B&B, and they have got it right. It is a down to earth place, honest and from the heart. We hope to return to Sicily, and without a doubt we would stay at Terre di Himera again. We have new friends in Maria and Fabrizio, and through them we had a glimpse into the the nature of the Sicilian people and their rich and wonderful culture. Bravo!

It is hard to add something useful to the other comments. My family and me spent the first days of May 2012 her and we were extremely happy. Maria and Fabrizio took care of us like royalty. Thank you! Can't wait to come back. When are you planning some cooking classes for real Sizilian cuisine? "Slow Food" at it's best.

Room Tip: Don't miss a dinner here!

My husband and I just returned from a 2-night stay at Terre Di Himera and we cannot stop talking about how fantastic it was. Maria and Fabrizio have created a truly magical retreat that exceeded our expectations. Perched atop a hill with a magnificent view of the Sea, this lovely B&B is the perfect place to stay while exploring northern Sicily. It is ideally situated for day trips to both Palermo and Cefalu. Trust me - you will welcome coming home to the tranquility of Terre Di Himera after a day immersed in the hustle and bustle of Palermo.

Our room was large, airy, and beautifully decorated. Fresh lavender was placed on the bed daily along with bottled water on the nightstand. We loved that there was no television, but appreciated the strong wi-fi signal (free). The food was spectacular!!! We ate breakfast al fresco each morning, which was such a treat. Sitting amongst the olive trees, citrus orchards, and lavender we enjoyed wonderful fresh homemade cakes, biscuits, preserves, and Italian coffee. Dinner was amazing!!! Maria is a maestro in the kitchen. She prepared a spectacular Sicilian feast using fresh, local, organic products (e.g., olive oil made from their own olives, tomatoes grown by Maria's cousin, and freshly made ricotta). Fabrizio wowed us with tasty grilled meats prepared on the wood-fire grill. Our only regret from the trip was that we didn't eat dinner at Terre Di Himera both nights. Don't make the same mistake. Treat yourself to as much of Maria and Fabrizio's cooking and hospitality as you can.

After reading some of the other reviews, I was a little worried about being able to find Terre Di Himera, but we didn't have any trouble. Although there is no sign on the property, we were greeted by Napoleon and Elizabetha (two beautiful white dogs) and we knew we had found the right place. We gave Maria the exact coordinates for the property from our GPS, so you should be able to request those from her, plug them in, and off you go. Enjoy!!!

Out of all the places we stayed in Italy, this was the best. Just like the other Bed and Breakfast we stayed at in Sicily, the Sicilian hospitality is perfect in every way. We were warmly greeted from our hosts, Maria and her husband, and were immediately treated to tea, water, cake, and engaging conversation. We felt like we were part of their family.

Located inside an archeological park, the restored farmhouse has astounding views of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding mountains. The farmhouse itself is traditional, yet it has a contemporary feel to it; there is great attention to detail that exudes Sicilian charm. Attention is also given to natural and sustainable living. The rooms are extremely clean, beautiful, and well appointed with nice touches. Restored furniture from the 1800s enhances the charm of old Sicily.

We opted to dine there for dinner (extra, but worth it!), and as we waited, we were treated to homemade cannolis, cheese, bread, and olive oil as we sat outside taking in the tremendous views. The whole experience of just sitting outside and chatting with our hosts, listening to the countryside animals, watching freshly washed sheets dry in the warm breeze, and watching fresh artichokes and rosemary being delivered to the the kitchen from the garden, really made us pinch ourselves - we were in Sicily. As dinner was prepared, the whole farmhouse and the surroundings outside were filled with the wonderful aromas from the kitchen. The food was absolutely delicious and filling. It was our best meal in all of Italy.

If you are staying in the Palermo and Cefalu areas, we highly recommend Terre Di Himera. We know that if and when we return to Sicily, we will stay here again.

Room Tip: Every room is beautiful and quiet.

Maria and her husband have built this beautiful farmhouse into a lovely bed and breakfast. You get a heartwarming welcome and feel at home right away. Especially good are the meals. Maria cooks fresh every day, and you get a sweet breakfast and a 4-course-menue of organic and local products for dinner. They even have their own olive oil. The location is a little tricky to find, but if you find the right road you will be greeted loudly by several white dogs. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. You will find your room decorated with fresh flowers every day. What you will not find is a TV, which helps to enjoy the nature even more.
I highly recommend a stay at Terre Di Himera!

Charming hosts
Great location
Awesome food
Large, clean and well appointed rooms.

Fabrizio and Maria have genuine pride in their island, culture and their new agritursimo, which results in a truly unique stay in Sicily. We felt the most welcome and spoilt that we did for our entire 3 weeks in Sicily. Marias cooking is nothing less than a delight. Her breakfast cakes, baked fresh daily, are beautiful. We would strongly recommend the dinner - great value for money, but also a unique opportnity to sample genuine sicilian food prepared and presented excellently. If you do have it, dont eat lunch and book a late breakfast, because it is a real feast. We stayed for 4 nights and ate 2 dinners with Maria and had dinner for the other 2 nights at the Baglio Himera at the bottom of the hill on the main road - also very good food.

We found Terre di Himera a little hard to find - it is on the right hand side of the road 2.5klms up from the ss113, where you turn off at the sign for the antiquitarium himera . Fabrizio is getting a sign made soon.

We clearly enjoyed our stay and are not normally so complimentary in our reviews, but Fabrizio and Maria genuinely deserve the earlier posts and our experience was excellent.
