Review of Deep Run Roadhouse

Deep Run Roadhouse
Ranked #121 of 1,648 Restaurants in Richmond
Certificate of Excellence
Cuisines: Barbecue
Description: Deep Run Roadhouse serves delicious regional BBQ, Tex-Mex and Comfort Food. All of our dishes are prepared daily from the best local ingredients with specialties including smoked meats and made from scratch sides. Owner Paul Hubbard is a native of the neighborhood in which his restaurant is located. Hubbard is a graduate of the Culinary Arts Program at Hermitage Technical Center and has held chef positions in some of the area's finest restaurants. Those family-owned restaurants taught him the importance of hospitality, attention to detail and creating an exciting, flavorful and unique menu. In 2009, he opened Alamo BBQ in Church Hill and realized affordable and comforting food appealed to a lot larger audience. What his audience wanted to eat became his favorite thing to cook. Alamo BBQ's success is a testament to the fact Richmond loves BBQ and comfort food. The two cuisines go hand in hand and are loved by all. Deep Run Roadhouse proudly offers the very best of both and provides delicious offerings for all cravings or diets. Its smoked portabello mushrooms, soups, salads and fresh made sides can satisfy any vegetarian or BBQ lover. All menu items are prepared daily, utilizing the freshest, local ingredients. Deep Run Roadhouse operates on one of Hubbard's favorite sayings: "Never think you're smarter than the food you cook, or the people you cook for."

Tired of prissy party food? Is the sight of one more gluten-free, hyper-vegan, free-range, kale & tree bark small plate sending you into orbit? Are the brown & gray post-holiday blahs getting you down? Maybe you just need MEAT! Satisfy your inner caveman at Deep Run Roadhouse.
What do you get? Friendly, enthusiastic counter service at a non-chain locally owned restaurant. A big selection of meaty mains and homemade sides. A spacious, clean, but basic dining room where you can wolf down all your food. If you still have room, there's also a selection of homemade desserts.
I wouldn't say the portions are enormous, but neither are the prices, and my companion & I each had a platter with two meats + three sides for less than $30 total!!! Amazing! I could make a meal just on the side dishes they offer. The Texas caviar was fresh & tasty, and the jalapeno mac & cheese had quite a kick to it. Not saying that I did, but if I happened to have the Strawberry Tres Leches cake, it was great, too.
Go to this place and support your local merchant - you'll be doing your civic duty while you're eating like a pig.

Mmmm, the brisket is amazing! We have eaten in and gotten take out many times, and they have never disappointed. The barbecue is delicious, but having a bison burger on the menu is always a nice addition. For sides, we especially like the Texas caviar (black bean/corn/bell peppers) and the potato wedges. The staff is friendly, and the barbecue (brisket, pork, chicken) is all juicy, smoky, and flavorful. We'll keep going back!

I had heard about Deep Run Roadhouse from friends and reviews here on Tripadvisor. It is in an unexpected location. We got the family meal which included pulled pork, four buns, slaw to put on the sandwich, and two sides. We chose the potato salad and the cowboy beans and both had great flavor. I was surprised as to how much slaw was given to us to put on the sandwich, it was just as much as a regular side.

The pulled pork had good flavor and there was plenty provided to make four big sandwiches. The sauce was very good and did not take away from the flavor of the meat. I noticed a good smoke ring on some of the pieces of the pork. My daughter decided to get the fish of the day and she said it was very good.

I will definitely go back as I want to try the train wreck.

Hubby had been raving about The Alamo downtown and could not wait to take me to Deep Run Roadhouse. It was wonderful. Meat and sauces full of flavor. Don't let the surrounding establishments dissuade you from going in. Food and service both excellent. For wimps like me, they have sauces on the sweeter side. For you bolder folk, they have some spicier options. There are some interesting Burrito options. There are also Bison Burgers on the menu. For BBQ, this is the place to come.
