Annie is the most gracious, generous and personable host. She is steady and professional. She kept the restaurant at its best. Why mess with perfection?
The grilled lamb chops are the absolute best of any other place. The rockfish is light and tasty. Creme brulee, of course, is just what it is supposed to be, molten chocolate torte is delicious but not over the top chocolate. Selection of wines is plenty, with a good choice of wine by the glass. The place is romantic and, guess what?, you can even hear the people at your table, so noise is not an issue - makes for a very relaxing evening. We took our time with dessert and chatted after our meal. This is THE place to go - the restaurant that sets the bar for all others.

Chez Max is our 'go to' place for very special events. It won't be time again until my June Birthday, but I am already looking forward to it. They are not often promoted in Richmond, but perhaps it is because they already have all the business they can manage, and they don't need to advertise. We always make a reservation, and enjoy the food, atmosphere, ambiance, and the staff. Their wine list is not that large, but is wisely chosen, and we have found the suggestions made to be most enjoyable. They even go out of their way to recork any leftover wine in the bottle so that you can take it home. When I go there, I feel not only welcome, but appreciated, and enjoy being treated like a special guest instead of just another couple of bodies. If you are looking for a place for a quiet conversation, excellent food, and the feeling that your hard earned money was well-spent, then this is the place to go. My only wish would be that they would add a dry amontillado sherry to their drink menu, as I enjoy that more than the standard martini or other adult beverages.

A French restaurant owned and operated by a French woman. Her husband unfortunately passed away...he was a superb chef. The food, service and ambience remain excellent. We have had most things on the menu and they are at least 8/10. Quiet enough for a conversation as well.

Went there for NYE...had advance reservations. They had to turn away 350 persons. It IS that good.

By far one of our favorite restaurants. The food is outstanding and the service excellent. We have not been disappointed in the years we have visited.

Chez Max just might be Richmond's best all-around restaurant. Classic French and American favorites win the day here, including expertly prepared real Dover Sole, sliced venison, veal sweetbreads, foie gras, escargot and a perfect Lobster Bisque. Excellent food quality is enhanced by a professional, attentive staff that knows the menu (what a concept!) and is happy to accommodate special requests, including reasonable substitutions.

The restaurant's decor, while firmly rooted in a '70s, stylized American interpretation of a country French farm house, is still pleasant enough and certainly isn't a distraction -- like so many French restaurants in the U.S. The wine list is reasonably priced, although far from creative, and the number of French offerings is sadly limited. I think the the food quality deserves better, and if you're a serious wine lover you might consider "bringing your own" and paying a corkage fee. (Many Virginians seem to balk at paying anything over $29 for a bottle of wine...)

If you're looking for a very good meal with a French influence, in a pleasant place, not inexpensive, but fairly priced, you'll be very pleased with Chez Max. The only drawback for some West-enders might be the perceived "way-out-on-Patterson" location, although drive time from the Libbie Grove area is tops, maybe twelve minutes. We're already looking forward to our next visit.
