“Great pimento cheese”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2013

I enjoyed my pimento cheese sandwich- and adding the fried green tomatoes to it really made the sandwich great! Squash casserole also very good and my daughter's fried catfish was delicious. Green beans were not prepared southern-style, however, which was our only disappointment. They were still slightly crunchy and bright green- more nutritious, perhaps, but not what we expected in a restaurant specializing in southern food. Overall, though, our lunch was very good and we would definitely visit at Comfort again!

“In the Comfort Zone”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2013

Because I am a Brit I think I know about pubs, in theory and practice and especially as they apply to Great Britain in general. I can tell you quite a lot about them, should you ask, but I always end up stating the same thing, it is very difficult to put your finger on what the British pub is all about. The fairest thing to say is that you have to find one you like and stick to that as your standard. There used to be enough of them to do that and even though the numbers have been decimated over the last 10 or 20 years there are still a fair number of them around. The chances are good you will be ok when you want a quiet pint or a noisy one.
In America there are frequent attempts to re-create the British Pub. They never quite work because first of all they are always in the minority. Americans drink/eat/hang out in Bars, not in pubs and Bars are something quite different from Pubs. Firstly they come into categories: there are Sport Bars, there are Sexy Bars, there are Bars for the end of the week and presumably for the weekends and beginnings of the week too. Then there are the food Bars. There are bars that sell a lot of alcohol and a lot of food as well from all around the global village: Australia to Hawaii and everywhere else as well. Then there are the American Bars.
American bars mean that they bring together something exclusively American. In Richmond, which has become the centre of a rich breeding ground for micro-breweries and wineries, you will find these places dotted around. One of them is called Comfort and boasts mainly Southern cooking of the type that you would imagine anyone borne after 1960 fondly remembers from their childhood. There is meatloaf, hamburgers of course, catfish, grilled cheese, turkey, sidedishes and, well that is about it really. It is, a very modest menu indeed, so you would expect the kitchen to be able to keep up with orders and to make it a taste experience, especially at the prices charged, which if not eye-watering are definitely on the pricey side for plain fare. However there are plenty of locally brewed beers and a cheerful atmosphere because Comfort is in the middle of Studentia and there are a lot of students around in Richmond, although how they have the money to eat here I have no idea.
Despite the simple level of the menu the food took about 20 minutes to arrive. Drinks came quite quickly. The interior of the restaurant is a restored shop of some kind with a big bar, lots of bar stools, crowded tables and a high ceiling. Noise is a problem even on a weekday afternoon visit. There are plenty of opportunities to just sit and people watch, students don't mind that, and many of them there were just hanging out rather than eating. Not making a lot of noise but in that space it seemed like a lot anyway. Our server seemed fairly interested in what we wanted, there was no children's menu. When the food came it was a disappointment. How bad can a meat loaf be? Well you have to go to Comfort to find out. But the fries served with the pulled pork sandwich were good. The cheese grilled sandwich was ok, at least the very self-opinionated 5-year old who ordered said it was. My cheese and mac was a cold congealed mess on the side of the plate which also consisted of two slices of stale bread and a slab of meat loaf. I was glad there was plenty of beer to wash it down. This is definitely not the sort of place you would feel comfortable complaining about the quality of the food. It is what it is.
So did I like the Comfort Bar/restaurant? - yes I did. Eating is definitely not what Comfort is all about, it is as if the eating part of it featuring lazy cooks and an inefficient kitchen is just an afterthought. This is a hanging out Bar for students, perhaps a people watching place for the terminally bored and partially deaf. Probably great fun in the evenings but not during the day.

“Delicious!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2013 via mobile

A friend suggested Comfort when I came into town overnight and was meeting an assortment of local friends from different parts of the City. As we arrived, we had to gather at the bar until everyone arrived -- they will not seat you until the whole group is there. The bartender was great, making excellent suggestions for beers to each patron's taste. One person had to leave early, so his order was put in immediately and arrived promptly. He did not feel rushed nor troublesome to the waitron. The food was great! Delicious, but not overdone. The macaroni & cheese alone is worth the trip.

“Fun with Friends”

Great selection of bourbons! There are some great appetizers, which are perfect for sharing! The side dishes are the stars of the entrees though, make sure you try the grits and the greens!

“food in a noisy setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2013 via mobile

If comfort is noise, Comfort hits the spot. Meatloaf was overdone; braised greens maybe a but too braised. Catfish was done nicely. Service was ok so experience was a bit underwhelming.
