“Give me Liberty!”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

The reenactment each Sunday during the summer months portray the 2nd Convention of Virginia delegates meeting to debate entering the Revolution. It was during these debates that Patrick Henry gave us the famous line, "Give me liberty, or give me death!" The reenactment takes place in the same church as the actual event, where Henry, Washington, Jefferson, and other notable Virginians once sat. The audience can also take part in small ways. A concert of patriotic music precedes the "convention." Photos may be taken with "Founding Fathers" after the performance. There is also a well-stocked gift shop. The church is from 1741, although the parish dates back to 1611. The tombstones outside the church are some of the oldest in Richmond...very interesting! There are also some performances on Veteran's Day, around Christmas, and perhaps one or two more. You can also arrange for a private performance. All in all, 5 stars! If you want to "feel" the passion of the Revolution, this is where you'll find it!

“Highly Recommended. Fantastic Presentation!”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

The docent dressed in period costume and speaking in the voice of Patrick Henry passionately imploring the House of Burgesses to give him liberty or death made
our visit to the site of of this exciting historical event a memorable experience. My husband and I were the only folks on the tour, but it did not stop "Ray" from giving an outstanding dramatic performance that we thoroughly enjoyed. He was a very knowledgeable guide and answered questions that could have easily stumped other tour leaders. There is a reasonable fee to enjoy the history and the drama. Edgar Allen Poe's mother is interred in the churchyard.

“Historically significant but just not as good as it could be”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

It is amazing to think that Washington, Jefferson, and Henry were among the esteemed gentlemen gathered here at the same time back in the 1770's. The church is most known for being the meeting place for the Virginia congressional meeting where Patrick Henry gave his "Give me liberty or give me death" speech. The church --- still in use today --- is surrounded by a cemetary. The most notable of those interred are George Wyeth and Poe's mother. I wish we could have been there to see the reenactments held on Sundays during the summer months. I have heard good things about the reenactments. Our tour guide just didn't bring it as alive as it should have been. If you go, you'll pay $7/person for a brief tour of the church. If you have the flexibility, go early to get a seat when they have a reenactment.

“Patrick Henry speech”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

This beautiful historic church, dating form 1741, was the site of Patrick Henry's 'Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death' speech. Every Sunday in summer this is reenacted by outstanding actors. It is thrilling to hear the speech recited right where it happened. I highly recommend this experience, which is free.
