My husband and I enjoyed an evening walk down monument avenue. At first we were a little disappointed the monuments were in the middle of the road. But we decided to cross the traffic and get a closer look at the monuments and read the inscriptions. Very interesting. We enjoyed looking at the houses along monument ave as much as we enjoyed the monuments. We did follower the advice of a previous reviewer and wore our walking shoes. It is definitely worth a visit. The previous reviewers descriptions are accurate, we're glad we listened to the advice.

Grand scale monuments to the famous Civil War heros of the South. Brick paved street so car a little rough riding , but speed limit is low so that did not trouble us. Wonderful houses along this street too. Worth going a little out of the way to see it. You really need a car on a hot day as they are spread out; JEB Stuart, Stonewall Jackson, General Lee and Jefferson Davis are the main stars; oddlyArthur Ash and Mathew Maura were later added.

It's fun to stroll or drive slowly up this avenue. Every block has a different sculpture of an historical person along the middle island. Along both sides of the street are lovely homes - mostly all brick since clay is plentiful in this area. Worth looking at as well as the monuments. It doesn't matter in which direction you go since the monuments are in the center.

Friendly people, columns, front gardens, porches, and historical depictions all make for a leisurely stroll worth taking. However, uneven sidewalks keep your eyes moving to avoid a fall.
