“A must see for the Civil War buff”
Reviewed July 22, 2014

The Richmond National Battlefield Park actually covers a half a dozen park locations and all of which are phenomenal. Its a testimonial to the thousands who died to preserve it and those who perished abolishing the acts which were passed in the courthouses of the times. There was a hospital that housed 17000 confederates at one time to the hollowed grounds of battlefields ripped apart by repeat assault and bombardment. When you consider what happened in and around Richmond, visiting these sites will only make it all come together. You can't really be a student of history, without this experience.

Happy travels!

“Civil War Battleground”
Reviewed July 16, 2014

Before going out to the battlegrounds, visit the Civil War Visitor Center next to Tredegar iron Works. It is run by the US Forest Service. 2 interesting films and maps of the battlegrounds - all free. Drive out to fields - there are several. It's mostly just park and walk and look around and try to imagine the battles. The best battlefield was at Cold Harbor. It's run by the US Forest Service and tours are given several times a day. You get to walk to see the site of major battles along with explanation. Forest Service is free but it's good to leave a donation. Rest rooms in their building. The town of Cold Harbor has a nice restaurant of that name - for lunch .

“Extensive Battlefield Tours”
Reviewed July 4, 2014

Unfortunately I had very little time and crammed a lot of stuff into only a day and a half. We visited the Tredegar Iron Works Visitor Center, Chimborazo Medical Museum, Fort Harrison, Cold Harbor, Gaines Mill, and Malvern Hill. The Iron works is the main visitor center and is a must stop to begin your tour. They have a small museum describing the action around Richmond during the civil war and a very informative staff of park rangers and volunteers. We spent the most time at Cold Harbor. They have a small visitor center with an electronic map description of the battle as well as the Gaines Mill battle, which is just down the road a couple miles. There is a nice trail taking you through the most extensive part of the battle. I regret not having more time and would like to go back and explore Malvern Hill and Gaines Mill more extensively in particular.

There is nothing I can compare the battlefield tour with. There are so many stops representing so many different engagements in the battles around Richmond that just doing the driving tour is well worth your time. Add in excellent visitor centers and displays, this is a MUST for any Civil War aficionado.
