The museum has lot of history of the hospital or medical field. This area was used for wounded soldier during battle.

“Visit to Chimborazo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2012

This is now a beautiful park of many acres, but the ghosts of the thousands of Civil War soldiers who were here endures. The main building is a museum of medicine of that era. The displays are good, if a bit grizzly. There is also a good short movie of Civil War medicine. The ranger was very helpful and attentive. A must visit for a Civil War buff.

I am in the medical field and was looking forward to this museum. This place consists of a few artifacts, a map and a movie. I was pretty disappointed. So then I went to the hill with the view, which was disappointing as well. Stick to the museum of the confederacy and skip this completely.

“Lots of history, not much remaining of original structures”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2012

While this was one of the largest General Hospitals and convalescent centers in the Am. Civil War (and the absolute largest in the Confederacy), there remains almost nothing of the original structures. The welcoming center which offers a very small museum and a video that is certainly worth watching is about the only structure on site. Even this structure post-dates the Hospital on the site. What does remain is the amazing view of Richmond from this hill top vantage point. More a place to walk the grounds and remember the suffering, those that recovered and went on to do after the war, and those that succumbed to wounds and infection, apparently a death rate of almost 5 soldiers a day during it's war time operations.

This site is too important as a reminder of the horrors of war to be relegated with such a small footprint. The US Park Rangers were knowledgeable and very accommodating. Part of a larger collection of Parks and CW Battlefields.
