This is s great little hole in the wall spot with friendly staff and great soul food - a neighborhood favorite. Do: try the seafood salad! Our meal here was very good and the staff was wonderful. We will return to try more on the menu. They also have fresh baked cakes available - lots of flavors to try.

The food, service and atmosphere were great. There was courteous service with very little wait, though the restaurant was full at 1 p.m. on a Friday afternoon - the first good sign. Our waitress was friendly and helpful with the menu and seated us right near the cake display, which were to die for. Portions were large, prices reasonable, and the food was expertly prepared. The catfish platter was delicious as was the roasted chicken. We had never had sweet tea before and it was the best.. . not just adding sugar to tea, but flavorful and not too sweet. I typically drink tea without any sugar but this was excellent. We were too full to eat the cake with lunch but enjoyed it for a midnight snack. The peanut butter and chocolate hit the spot. Will definitely return for more. Not too far from the airport, though directions are a must.

Having only been open three years, Mama J's is truly worthy of becoming a Richmond's institution. The food is all home cooked using Mama's recipes. The catfish and fried chicken are probably two of the most ordered items and after one taste you'll understand why. The selection of sides is good and the portion size is very generous. They have a full bar and local brews. There is usually a wait to get a table or a place at the bar, however it's well worth it. Get a drink from the bar and get to know some of the patrons of this fine establishment. My wife and I have frequented Mama J's half a dozen times in the past three months and have always left looking forward to our next visit.

Had a great lunch with a friend who grew up in Richmond while visiting. We both ordered catfish with sides. The waitress was very sweet and food came up fast. The collards and sweet potatoes were great. I'm glad to have been talked into bread pudding for dessert. The portions are generous for a very reasonable price.
I'll definitely go back the next time I visit Richmond!

A terrific restaurant. For appetizers we had the pork shanks and the cat fish fritters. Both were excellent. For our main courses we had the fried chicken, awesome, the crab cake sandwich, great and the trout, wonderful. For side dishes we had the collared greens and the macaroni. Both were great.
